Easily one of the best movies ever; so unbelievably touching. Captain K's story is so brilliant; the fact that he shows up to JoJo's house not by luck but because he knew Rosie was caught (he shows up with her bike, after all) and wanted to protect JoJo and seeing him piece together what's happening and helping the best he can is so touching. So many reactors don't seem to know the Hitler Jugend was a real thing, basically fascist scouts... When you go to the cemeteries in Normandy and visit the German one, you see thousands graves of children who were 16-17 on D-Day. Children who were 11-12 when the war started...

Havent been to normandy but at that stage the actual hitler jugend were recruited exclusively into the 12th ss panzer division that fought at Caen on the British/Canadian/polish sector. Up until late 1944 a german boy, hitler jugend or not, would normally do a year in ‘community service’ after leaving school - at that time usually anti-aircraft batteries in germany - before going into the official military. So former hitler jugend were 18-19 by the time they got to the front except for those who went directly into the 12th SS from 1943 onwards. That broke down entirely in 1945 when the allies crossed the german border. Im aware of 17 year olds in france but ive never heard of 16 year olds.

When I first watched this movie, the scene where we see ScarJos feet is heartbreaking
The director & writer is Taika Waititi, who also played Hitler. Most of the time he played a burlesque of Hitler. Once or twice he channelled the man quite accurately. You can tell when.
I think that Jojos mom knew about Captain Ks secret, which is why she was so unrestrained around him.

This is easily one of if not my favorite movies all time. I think it does so many things so well, balancing drama with comedy and bringing light to a really dark topic. The symbolism of so many scenes, like the windows after he finds his mother looking like the eyes of his German neighbors watching without helping ending with the only person who consoles him ends up being the same person that was being made out to be a monster ( Jews). There is also the "heil hitler" joke when the gestapo shows up and after the third time they introduce them selves you are tired of the "joke" but then it happens again when Elsa introduces herself but this time you definitely aren't laughing its suddenly tense almost reminding you that while yes this is a comedy these events were real and terrifying and there is a point when jokes stop being jokes and become reality so be aware. I just love this movie so happy to see your reaction to it, it is an all time great in my opinion.

Also, Yorki is the realest of real ones.

This is one of the most poignant movies of the decade. The subtle motifs set up in the movie were beautifully executed. I mean learning to tie your shoes is a quintessential part of growing up and Jojo’s struggle with that makes Rosie’s end that much more of a punch in the gut.

I love the weird little windows in the roofs... they look eye like. I need to look into if this was a historical architecture style, or maybe its artistic license for Jojo and Elsa to look out of from within.

Addie is completely right to praise the child actors in this film. And I'm glad she did. I remember when I saw this film years ago. And that's one point I never articulated. So often in movies where there are kids it can be a big slog. But in this movie particularly there wasn't a single moment where I thought, oh that kid shouldn't have been cast, or he doesn't have the chops yet. I was so engrossed with the story and the characters that even the kids felt like they were killing it. Apparently so much so that fact that they were kids acting was so far away from my mind that I never considered it until the moment I watched this video today.

I'm so glad that you liked this film! Some people just didn't understand it. It's a coming-of-age tale of a kid who had been indoctrinated throughout his ENTIRE life by the German National Socialists to the point that he idolized Hitler. Over a short period of time, he begins to understand after meeting a Jewish girl who effectively reinforced the things that his mom had taught him. It really is a beautiful story. I also believe that it is one of the most tightly-written scripts that we've seen in years. As a screenplay, I place it right up there with films like Hot Fuzz, 12 Angry Men, The Shawshank Redemption, Back to the Future, Fargo, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and Galaxy Quest.

For a little bit, i was afraid you weren't going to love this movie. It treads a thin line - by making light of dark subjects. But what we can see in that light it's so marvelous. ScarJoJo was a masterpiece, even better than her usual. Taika was exactly as hilarious as he needed to be. And as chillingly unfunny when he needed to be. I'm so glad your initial hesitance didn't prevent you from loving this movie.

Jojo's mom said she never looked a tiger in the eye? That's not true, she looked the Nazi regime (tiger) in the eye trying to help people. The guy that covered for Jojo and Elsa knew something happened to the mother, so he rushed over there after he found her bike without her in town. When he comes in the door, you can see it with him. He came to cover for Jojo and to protect her kid not knowing about the Jewish girl. You could see the surprise on his face seeing her for the first time. First time I saw the movie, I was just like you. I was shocked at the subject matter, but it was beautifully balanced. The fact that the guy that played H (Taika Waititi) wrote and directed this film. It was based on a book from 2008

I really fell in love with this movie. And it was completely by accident. Definitely not the type of movie I'd purposely watch. But it really landed home. Everyone did beautifully. Merchant, Rockwell, Wilson, Johanson. Even little Yorki.
Admittedly somethings did go over my head or missed. The movie was so darling that at first I flat out refused to believe they killed his mother. I assumed it was some other woman with the same shoes. So it didnt have the emotional impact on me as it should have. Also Captain K's showing up wasn't coincidental. The one time I appreciate a comments section.
Overall, this was a beautiful movie that I loved more than I think I did. It doesn't get talked about enough as if not one of the best in the decade, perhaps of all time.

Captain K is by far one of the best characters. If you watch a second time you’ll notice …
    - that captain k was obviously gay.
    - he has a look of disgust on his face when the kids were burning the books
    - when JoJo asks about what he should do if he finds a Jew and asks about mind control which is what was in the propaganda, Captain K quickly brushes past it telling him that he doubts it’s true and tries to change the subject.
    - when showing up to Jo Jo’s house when the gustapo? Spelling?
was there he was carrying Jojo‘s mom‘s bike, he knew she was already dead and rushed to make sure they didn’t find the girl and take JoJo in as a traitor.
    - when they were looking at the YooHoo Jew book and Elsa said it was hers Captain K shoots a knowing look at Jojo because ge knows it’s his.
    - His extravagant outfit in the end battle is decorated with pink triangles which was the sign the nazi made gay people wear. He was out and proud I’m his last moments ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜
The thought and care that was put into writing and making this movie was I incredible.

  • @Justin_Leone

As tragic as Rosie's death is, Captain K's might hit me even harder. He's a surprisingly complex character. A career soldier (who genuinely loves and excels at soldiering), but who obviously has no allegiance to Hitler's ideology, who has been relegated to jobs pushing propaganda he doesn't believe in. It's no wonder he seems to half-ass these assignments, and that his role in the book burning scene is to stand sullenly in the background drinking. It's left ambiguous how involved he may be in the resistance, but it's implied he knows of Rosie's involvement.
And in the final "defense" of the city, it's apparent that his intention is nothing other than to go out in a blaze of glory, but his own definition of glory: A flamboyant uniform of his own design, fabulous makeup, guns fired harmlessly skyward, alongside his barely-kept-secret lover (I'm ashamed that I somehow didn't catch the obvious indications that he and Finkel are lovers on my first viewing).
In his final scene, Finkel is conspicuously missing, and Captain K is holding his cape, which is absolutely heartbreaking. And in what he knows are his last few moments, he keeps it together for JoJo, and instead of letting JoJo try to get him off the hook, he sacrifices himself to make sure he's safe, and goes to join Finkel with a smile on his face. He perfectly exemplifies the running theme of "doing what you can".

As you point out, Sam Rockwell's character does a few things in the movie that demonstrate true heroism. (No, not the same brand of heroic resistance we learn about Scarlett Johansson, to be sure.) These are just tiny moments in the film, passing by as incidental plot points. Not much is made of it, but his actions manage to save the lives of two children. I like to hope in true Nazi Germany, similar acts of anonymous heroism were performed dozens of times a day across the country, by nameless, forgotten people. Some were caught, punished, executed, while others were fortunate to escape undetected, never to be known. While this film has a few different themes, what hits hardest for me is how this film is a tribute to all of those unknowns - names and faces forgotten but defiant in the face of true evil. The people we all hope we ourselves would be. David Bowie's "Heroes" is the perfect song to sum up the film; dancing, in the end, upon the fraudulent front of fascism.

The scenes of imaginary Hitler eating a Unicorn head and also constantly trying to make Jojo smoke cigarettes' are to show the figure of imagination of a 10-yo boy like Jojo and how little most kids at the time actually knew about Hitler and the war. If Jojo had actually been educated with facts rather than propaganda he would've known that Hitler was an anti-smoking vegetarian.
Taika Waititi is part Jewish himself and it was his mother, Robin Cohen who first told him that he should think about adapting Christine Leunens’ novel “Caging Skies” for the big screen, which then eventually turned out to be “Jojo Rabbit.” Adapted from “Caging Skies".
Scarlett Johansson has a Danish father and an American mother of Polish-Jewish ancestry, so she has dual Danish-American citizenship. The Polish-Jewish side of her family really suffered horribly during the war, while the Danish Jews never even wore an identification mark (like the yellow star), unlike in the rest of occupied Europe, and eventually the Danes also saved all their Jews from the extermination camps, though at the end 464 Jews, who did not manage to escape in time to Sweden, were captured by the Germans and sent to the Theresienstadt Ghetto and concentration camp, but even then, representatives from the Danish government managed to persuade the Germans to accept packages of food and medicine to be sent to all the Danish prisoners, also persuading the Germans not to deport any Danish Jews to extermination camps.
In February 1944, now knowing that the war was practically lost, the German SS embarked on a propaganda "beautification" campaign to prepare the Theresienstadt ghetto for the visit from the Danish Red Cross and a delegation from the Danish government. Many "prominent" prisoners and all the Danish Jews were re-housed in private, superior quarters. The streets were renamed and cleaned; sham shops and a school were set up and the SS also encouraged the prisoners to perform an increasing number of cultural activities. Still, a total of 51 mainly elderly Danish Jews got sick and died of disease or old age at Theresienstadt, but non of them went to the extermination camps and so thankfully almost all of Denmark's Jewish population survived. So Scarlett Johansson have both a Danish and Polish-Jewish understanding of this part of history, that made this kind of role a perfect fit for her.

2019 was not a great year to be a character played by ScarJo. Not only did she go through a rough divorce (Marriage Story) but she died, twice (this and Endgame).
I love this movie though. It's such a gem, just a full on roller coaster of emotions in the best ways.
