I recall Lauryn Hill saying: "I think my biggest influence of all time... might be NAV." It's amazing that he still makes bangers to this day and was such a big influence to 90s artists.
In Utero is one of the most insanely aggressive mainstream rock records ever. It blows my mind how massive it is because it really is batshit abrasive at times with songs like Milk It and Tourettes.
Agreed. I always loved that after Nirvana got mega mass exposure and the attention of everyone, they dropped In Utero on us. Like as if to say, can you hang with this? I was really anticipating its release. Still remember buying it the day it came out and being like GODDAMN as I was playing the tape in my car. The bombastic drum sound alone was exciting and the songs went from intense extremes to chill mode to nuts again to zen fade out. Incredible album. Saw them twice on that tour.
I’d also include “Siamese Dream” (1993) by Smashing Pumpkins, “Illmatic” (1994) by Nas, “Dummy” (1994) by Portishead, and “Dirt” (1992) by Alice In Chains.
“Siamese Dream” is clearly a 10, their other albums front to back hard to say a perfect 10, Gish would be the closest prob. “aenima” also isn’t in the list, “jagged little pill”…
@@josephlin2879he did a classic review of it and put every track as his favorite. He probably does think it's either a strong 9 or a 10 and he might feel the same way about some other albums that came out in the 1990s but didn't put the in this video to not make it too long
Melon, I highly suggest to keep this series going by listing a few of your 9/10s for each decade (once you finish the 10s for each decade). I’m still very curious on what you were liking before you had started reviewing
I’m assuming he’s not listing every 10. Like there has to be more. No Rage self titled or Evil Empire. No liquid swords or illmatic. No ok computer. Etc etc
i love rages self titled but the track "settle for nothing" is a skip for me, it just kills the flow of the album for me because of how slow and somehow dissonant it is
Almost a possibly fun/interesting exploration of an idea. Beyond being a *greatest hits following the trend of the day* It's worth hearing the fun tracks that are following the trend of the day, without actually making waves
@@mr.joesterr5359Matchbox 20 is NOT inoffensive!!! One thing is to have boring, mellow, and kinda bad music!!! another this is to have POPULAR boring mellow music!!! god even the thought of listening to it makes me wanna pass out, it’s just so annoying GOD
Even if Melon thinks Radiohead is overrated, I have to believe he would still consider OK Computer a 10/10 as well. Its themes are still so relevant today and I can't forget to mention the top tier flow and consistency of each song . It's a 90s masterpiece no doubt.
If you don’t think Fitter Happier slaps maybe you haven’t been depressed and perfectionistic at the same time. I previously would go to listen to that track specifically and feel the disillusionment/bitterness/sadness/whatever that feeling is that is so relatable. And it’s brilliant, the tone of the AI encapsulating an attempt at a perfect life or society and then it kind of spirals and falls into itself with surreal illogical imagery, defeated, at the end
What _would_ some zeroes from the 00s and before be? Bonus points if you don't include the 2000s, since 20th century music can have a bit of a rose-tinted view to many.
@@DTheAustralian King Crimson's 1972's album "Earthbound" stands out to me, which is sad because In the Court of the Crimson King is one of the best albums ever. It was a live album that sounds like it was recorded in the back seat of a bus. Another honorable mention would be Vanilla Ice's Debut (I think 1990) - he singlehandedly set hip hop back like 20 years.
When I was a kid my dad asked me what I was listening to and I played him some of NIN's Downward Spiral and he said "oh cool, this sounds like Depeche Mode." I got my snobby teenage nose out of joint because I thought NIN were New and Cool™ and Depeche Mode were Old and Lame™. Then I finally listened to Violator many years later and thought 'aaah I get it now'
Nah, your snobby teenage nose had the right answer, just for the wrong reasons. I am a huge fan of both bands, but they don't sound that much alike short of the fact they're both atmospherically dark and synth based. But that's basically a whole sub-genre of music. And if you are going to compare Violator to a NIN album, Pretty Hate Machine is the correct answer. In any case, it's still very cool your dad liked both of them.
Great list Melon. Heres some of my picks Tom MacDonald - Ghoststories Me&me - Playdough Cooked in Tea Doug Walker - Nostalgia Critic’s The Wall Jake Paul - Litmas Kid Rock - Bad Reputation Various Artists - Pornhub Valentine's Day Album Apator - Masturbate in Praise of Black Satan Kevin Federline - Playing with Fire Annoying Orange - Emoji Raps
NIN - Downward Spiral Stereolab - Switched On or Peng Orbital - Insides Underworld - Dubnobasswithmyheadman Portishead - Dummy And loads more. 90's was a cracking decade for albums.
Because everybody fuckin talks about how good OKC is. He also thinks Low End Theory is a 10 but it wasn't here because it's already been discussed to death.
Dirt by Alice In Chain I feel is often overlooked when it comes to 10/10 records fromt the 90s The way the Layne writes about his personal pain and battles with addiction is heatbreaking, his voice is also incredible easily up there with the best rock vocals of the 90s The album also pushes what was concidered hard rock at the time mixing in weird time signitures and a rainbow of musical influences.
Dirt is a 10/10 certified hood classic I think we can all agree on that but dare I say it I think the Alice In Chains self title is just as if not better than dirt at certain points, But nobody talks about it! I think part of that is it came out at a time when grunge was starting to get phased out of the mainstream and it was released post Kurt but god damn people really need to go back and listen to it, I see almost nobody mention it. Edit: Fixed some errors my sleep deprived ass made
@@snozer6966 I actually prefer the self titled as well although I think dirt is the ‘better’ record overall. Dirt is straight 10/10, ST is probably an 8 I guess?
Gonna be *that* guy and say I'm surprised to see Loveless left off of this list. THE shoegaze record, interesting and lush production that still seems fresh even thirty years later, beautiful melodies, solid alt-rock core, good flow, and the back half of the album is gorgeous and tear-inducing. Maybe wasn't as influential or popular in its time but it is one of the most unique and best albums ever produced imo.
@@junefall4189 really incomparable albums because they are completely different sounds. heaven or las vegas is amazing and so is loveless, they really are stand out albums and cant be compared to anything else.
I think Jeff Buckley's Grace is a surefire 10/10 especially if we're judging retroactive influence you can trace a direct line from that record to tons of other albums that came after.
I was waiting for someone to say this - Grace is absolutely, 100000% a 10/10. It influenced so many artists and sits next to Freddie Mercurys work as the best male vocal performance of all time
Nevermind is iconic. It doesn’t matter if it’s everywhere, it’s there for a reason. Same thing with Joy Division. You can feel whatever kind of way you want about any music you want, but somethings are in fact popular because they deserve it.
@death to the suburbs not every album that successful and ubiquitous is necessarily that good but when it is that’s what makes for something truly generation defining imo
Probably a weird pick for the 90s but my favorite album of that decade is Bob Dylan's Time Out Of Mind. It's a bitter old man singing beautiful poetry with an unapologetically worn out voice, talking about things like the proximity of death and love (or the lack thereof) at an older age. Backed by gorgeous instrumentals that nod to his musical roots and his past career while also being a unique style among his vast discography. Bob Dylan might have had his most consistently good records in the 60s and 70s but this 97 album ends up being my favorite of his, and for me it's a 10/10.
Not a wierd pick at all. TOOM is a perfect Dylan/Lanois collab. My favourite album of the 90s is McCartney's "Off The Ground". That's a record that seldomly gets its laurels, I feel.
It’s a good list. I’d also have: Grace - Jeff Buckley Mellon Collie - Smashing Pumpkins Automatic For The People - REM WTS Morning Glory - Oasis And of course it can’t be a 90s 10/10 list without the best album of the 90s - OK Computer. It just is. And since it didn’t make it onto your 2000s list and the year 2000 is technically 20th century, honourable mention to ATDI - Relationship Of Command.
@@dallinlaw1605 exactly! I get it why people love Siamese Dream. It’s almost a 10/10 in that more classic ‘wall to wall awesome songs’ kinda way. But there are few, if any, albums that take you on such a multi dimensional journey as MCATIS.
My favorite album of the 90’s is Siamese Dream. its one of the few records I consider a 10/10, immaculate flow, great fusion of grunge, indie, dreampop, and heavy metal, amazing instrumentals and really great vivid and poetic lyricism. A little surprised to not see it here but also it’s understandable as the 10/10 status is very sacred and what one considers a 10/10 isn’t to someone else, and I understand Billy Corgan’s unique voice makes it hard for people to get into this band
It's very weird because it seems like the passage of time hasn't been kind to The Smashing Pumpkins and their connection to critical acclaim for their early work. In the 90's, critics thought Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie were brilliant, now no one seems to give a fuck. On the flip side of that, Nirvana was considered ground breaking, yet musically simple. Now they're getting critical praise, years later. I think image plays such a massive role in how a band is perceived as the decades pass.
@@francoalfonsoperezrodrigue6828 Todd in the Shadows also.. he makes a lot of SP references and I think secretly loves them but knows they're not seen as cool nowadays
@@royalwarlord2342 i kinda gotta agree with you here, especially since it seems like one pick per genre, and in terms of hip hop they are some of the best you can get. But you are totally right about how fresh that album still sounds, nearly 30 years later. I recently watched a video of a dad listening to it for the first time with his son and affirmed how right you are.
@@spencers4941 my pick would be Stankonia as I think its the GOAT album in any genre and i dont think theres anything else comparable to it and it still sounds ahead of its time even by todays standards but i cant argue with 36 Chambers
I love In The Aeroplane Over the Sea. Such a beautiful, cohesive, devastating, surreal album. I'm left in awe every time "Two Headed Boy Pt. 2" comes on, just because of how well the closer hits you after all the previous tracks. Absolutely a 10/10.
Two headed boy pt 2 might just be the saddest song ever written. its no moody like most sad songs are, but rather beautiful and depressing at the same time.
That album helped me so much during a very chaotic time in my life a couple years ago. Even without fully understanding the meaning behind it, it still felt so emotional and authentic and kept me coming back to dissect its lyrics and connect them to my own personal situation. Its a gift that keeps on giving and to this day I am still finding new things to enjoy about it.
Nevermind and Violator are still to this day some of my favorite albums of all time! I would of also added R.E.M.s Automatic For The People to that list but that's just my opinion. Great list!
@@nerdude360 yes, it's still my favourite hip hop album of all time, it's just I want to see it clarified y'know, but I know he has a classic review where he pretty much loved all tracks, but idk it didn't feel like he gave it a 10, more likely somewhere in the 9's. But at the end of the day, you're right, other opinions doesn't mean that it isn't good, it's you who decides that - and to listen to what you love. Have a nice day!
As someone who grew up in the 90's and owned a few of these albums I have to say for me Violator and Enter The Wu-Tang made the biggest impact on me. Violator was the peak of Depeche Mode's polished synth sound that was a blueprint for countless artists since. Violator is one of my favorite album's. Enter The Wu-Tang was like nothing I heard at the time or really since . Sure Wu-Tang has made similar albums but nothing like there debut . Decades later and I still have lyrics like these floating in my head. "“I smoke on the mic like smoking Joe Frazier The hell raiser, raising hell with the flavor Terrorize the jam like troops in Pakistan Swinging through your town like your neighborhood Spiderman.”"
Some 10s from the 90s for me are Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity Melvins - Houdini Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley Megadeth - Rust in Peace Alice in Chains - Dirt Sleep - Holy Mountain Judas Priest - Painkiller
Grace by Jeff Buckley is a perfect 10 for me. It gets its due but I still feel like it’s so under appreciated. Those songs might just be the best male vocal performances on wax for the whole decade.
Almost one third of Grace’s tracklist consists of covers, and “Corpus Christi” + “Lilac Wine” pale in comparison to “Hallelujah.” “Eternal Life” is a mediocre hard rock song that’s totally out of place on the album. Sure, there are some amazing tracks like the first three songs and “Lover, You Should’ve Come Over,” but I think that Grace has enough bumps in the road to put it in 8 or 8.5 territory.
@@echosmyron1278 Yeah but covers were just such a huge part of Buckley’s ethos as an artist pretty much since his earliest recordings. He was known for taking songs by artists such as Bob Dylan, Nina Simone, etc and transforming them. I think in that way grace attempts I think successfully (as any debut album should) to depict exactly who he was as a performer. But yeah eternal life is kinda mid
So unbelievably happy to see Depesche mode here. Would have liked to see the downward spiral here but idk if that’s commonly regarded as perfect or not, I personally love it
great choices. the 90s was such a great decade for music. I’d also give a perfect score to Laughing Stock, Spiderland, American Water, OK Computer (obv), The Downward Spiral, Either/Or, When The Pawn, Homogenic, Soundtracks For The Blind, Long Season, Loveless, Pygmallion, Mark Hollis self-titled, Dummy, Grace, If You’re Feeling Sinister, The Lonesome Crowded West, Dots and Loops and Symbolic among MANY OTHERS.
In my view the absence of The Lonesome Crowded West and Loveless in this video is absolutely ridiculous, especially considering fucking Nevermind made it
i LOVE Jeff Buckley, but i have a hard time giving Grace a 10. definitely an 8 or a 9, but there are definitely one or two duds on the track list, and personally i’ve never found Jeff’s lyrics to be that good. you can tell he’s shooting for something poetic and sensitive, but it comes off more so as really vague and melodramatic. Jeff was absolutely capable of creating an album that’s a 10 out of 10 tho, and it is a damn shame he wasn’t around long enough to live up to that potential
@@Exnavyjay I know a lot of people think that, but for me (and a lot of people), I really love some of the songs people consider "filler", in all honesty.
great picks, Melon. Mines would be: Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morrissette The Soft Bulletin - The Flaming Lips Homogenic - Bjork The Downward Spiral - Nine Inch Nails Loveless - MBV
@@arlodante1163 literally every 15 year old kid loves that album. It's way overplayed, and become terribly overrated in the last past decade or so. You are not special. You are not unique. You are just a Fantano Kid.
look, its a great album but it's a little overdone in some places. the album version of Grace is just a bit overblown imo, compared to the live versions he did around the time. not quite a 10/10 but I think he had a 10/10 album in him, his death is such a shame
Dynamo by Soda Stereo is definitely a 10/10. The impact it had on the Latin American music landscape of the moment, inspiring thousands to turn to a more atmospheric, experimental and sophisticated sound yet maintaining that raw power of Latin rock is incredible. But also the group manages to take the shoegaze aesthetic (only one year after loveless dropped) and make it their own, giving it a very unique spin and pushing it forward even more.
Yes. I would also say, for the same reasons, Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse. All the 90's output of Modest Mouse was so insanely influential that I don't think people will ever realize the reach of it. Same thing with my other mention here - The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin.
surprised to not see Spiderland on this list. That's like, the most 10/10 album out there every song is perfection (maybe aside from for dinner but even that track is pretty good).
Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain really is the 10 of the Indie Rock genre for me, it encapsulates that 90s energy perfectly and the album is just fantastic from start to finish
NIN’s The Downward Spiral would be my add on for this list. Such a perfect visceral blend of industrial music with classic rock influences. Not to mention the amazing sample usage for the times.
No Ok Computer? :( I'm sad Anthony, and you caused my deep-rooted sadness which is currently welling up in the bottom of my soul. Cal would have given it a 10/10, Cal's a better reviewer than you are. And on top of that, he made a fire-ass album in The New CALassics. But in all seriousness, I'm slightly surprised that you didn't include it. However, it is your opinion and I respect it (although I would have personally would have added it but it's not my video). Apologies for this poorly written comment.
I dont think he would disagree. Certainly theres more 10s in the 90's than the few albums mentioned in this video. Ok Computer, Homogenic, Ten, Achtung Baby, Automatic for the People, Ready to Die, The Black Album, Illmatic, Jagged Little Pill - just to name a few contenders.
‘Dirt’ - Alice In Chains is in my opinion, the best rock/grunge/metal album of the 90s. AIC always gets overlooked by Nirvana, but Alice In Chains was way better. IMO
I'd throw Talk Talk's Laughing Stock in this list as well. Moody, atmospheric, introspective; its a perfect album for me. Plus Myrhmann is a an incredible opener that perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album.
I don’t think these are all the 10/10 Albums because there are some albums missing that I know he gave a 10 Like Fugazi’s Repeater Loveless Blue Album Yank Crime Homogenic Things Fall Apart Nas Illmatic Soundtrack For The Blind If Your Feeling Sinister Bone Machine
Idk man on the video about TPAB taking over OK Computer as the highest rated album on RYM, he made it clear that he much preferred TPAB to OK Computer, which implies he doesn’t think it’s a 10
@@R-H-B He gave it a 10/10 on RYM (5/5 stars) so yeah it’s a 10 to him. You know you can prefer some albums over others, even if they’re both 10s to you, right? Guess since he ranked TPAB as the #1 album of the 2010s, it just implies the other albums he gave a 10 that decade aren’t 10s anymore.
Some of my personal 10's from the 90's are: Ween - The Mollusk Björk - Homogenic Primal Scream - Screamadelica Mr. Bungle - California Gustavo Cerati - Bocanada Mos Def - Black on Both Sides The Roots - Things Fall Apart Oöphoi - Behind The Wall Of Sleep OutKast - ATLiens Peshay - Studio Mix (this one was actually released in 2017, but it was recorded in 1996, so it counts for me, plus i really love it) Maybe these aren't objective 10's, they are really just some of my personal favorites.
All great mentions you got there. For all the memeing around it, every time I listen through The Mollusk I still get hyped the moment Ocean Man starts playing.
36 Chambers is the definition of a 10. Each member brings their own unique style on that album to the best of their abilities, and it makes for one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Only Wu Tang album better in my opinion is Supreme Clientele
I remember Anthony saying something along the lines of "this is the hip hop equivalent of a hardcore punk album" back in the day and I totally agree. So much energy and so much passion. Both very fun to listen to but also thought provoking. True classic.
Love the list. I would have to say that Siamese Dream, Low End Theory, Illmatic and Rage's First album are 10s to me. Lauryn Hill to this day is one of the best influences in hip-hop
Evil Empire and Rage Against the Machine - Self Titled, are definitely 9s or 10s but Anthony just named a couple of 10s from the decade, not saying these are the only ones
Surprised you didn't mention The Downward Spiral, that's one of the best records of the 90s imo Only other comment is that I think In Utero is a better record than Nevermind
it's not necessarily the betterness of nevermind, but the album that got the band and this certain genre going, The Project that really took the 90s rock scenery by storm. i think all the positive impact nevermind had on music is so unneglectable that it beats the potential upper hand In Utero has quality-wise.
@@kipkopkikopog I don't think impact should be much of a factor when rating a record, personally. There are many unique records that haven't influenced much that are considered classics and I don't think their uniqueness should be penalized in the score. The music sounds the same regardless of influence.
@@shadez123 i'm not sure you should completely strip an album of it's environment. bleach to nevermind was a huge, bold, but very successful attempt in trying to find an authentic sound. in utero i think in fact deepened that succes by not blindly capitalising and feeding off nevermind's characteristics, but being nearly as bold and inventive with it. i still think nirvana didn't quite hit the bullseye with utero. they were starting to head in an unconventional but unique and admirable direction, but the leap wasn't as big and the sound wasn't as complete as that of nevermind. i see your point, and it's fair, i still disagree though. but hey, whatever, nevermind
Both can be 10s and prefer one over the other I personally prefer in utero as well but it wouldn't be right to give nevermind any less than a 10 because truthfully both are masterpieces and its only really a matter of taste and mood that separates them
My 10’s: Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children Fishmans - Long Season Bjork - Homogenic Stereolab - Dots and Loops Ween - The Mollusk (I can’t tell if it’s a 10 or a 5)
I expected to see at least one Björk album on this list. And dont forget how influencial Homogenic was at that time...
@@SuavisforsenEIk I’m late but you know an album doesn’t have to be a 10/10 for it to be great, like the album can be a 7,8 or 9 and be a great album. Also there Anthony’s opinions, not him listing out all the possible 10’s, it’s the ones that mean the most to him.
Completely agree regarding the flow of In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. It’s the one album that I have to hear sequentially in order instead of playlisting my favorite songs. Great list Anthony!

"Endless, Nameless" is an unofficial official release. It was intended to be on the album, but the label removed it. Most releases have "Something in the Way" as the last track. FYI the version of "Endless" from the "With the Lights Out" boxset is the best version of that song.
Mezzanine was my album of the 90s. Been rocking Massive Attack since day1 and the switch up blew me away. When put the wax on for the first time with the bassline on Angel was literally in deep, then Risingson took me even deeper, Teardrop made me think I would never come back. I would argue that not only is it the album of the 90s but them first 3 tracks may be the best sequence in modern music. Honourable mentions to Homogenic, OK Computer, Illmatic and Music Has the Right to Children
Yeah, agree. One of the things that strikes me about Mezzanine since I still listen to it regularly a quarter of a century on is that it stands enough in its own space that it doesn't sound retro to me. It holds up as strongly now as it did then. (And I think tracks 8, 9, and 10 are the strongest of the lot!)
Depeche Mode's Violator was the first album I ever owned, my mom gave me the cassette for Christmas of 91 when I was eight years old and I wore that tape out playing it constantly. Had the chance to see them live in 98 with said mom and I still have the ticket stub (shoutout to Stabbing Westward who opened for them), such an important band during my formative years and mom & I continue to share music with each other to this day. Fuckin massive band, the track Blue Dress hits that dark and romantic vibe which Fantasmagoria here speaks of it's underrated af🙏
Im glad you mentioned neutral milk hotel. Had the chance to see them reunited 2014 in tulsa oklahoma. Greatest show I ever seen. Imagine every song of theirs, a little faster, a little harder and that was the atmosphere of the night.
It's impressive how AiC still hits just as hard after all these years despite all the post-grunge bros unconsciously trying to ruin the band's legacy with their terrible Layne Staley impressions.
Rage Against The Machine debut album is a 10 for me. One of the best ways to debut. Everything in that album showcased what RATM as a band is what they about and what they write/ stand about and how can I forget that amazing Album Cover that is a splice of what you can expect on the album. Nevermind is a legit pop album, and it fucking slams hard. This is lightning in a bottle, pure raw rock with catchy melodies and structure, without being cheesy. No wonder it became legendary the moment it came out
I’m glad Anthony bemoaned the people that call it a “grunge” album. That word is so misused and misunderstood. Grunge as a movement was largely a media creation based on fashion, geography, attitude etc.. it wasn’t ever a coherent musical genre. Most of bands that get called “grunge” bands have nothing to do with Nirvana
@@alienextraterrestrial113 Nirvana wore their influences on their sleeve. You can obviously hear Pixies, Wipers, Metallica, Buzzcocks, broad New wave influences in their sound.. but in terms of their contemporaries, I agree completely.. Nirvana sounds very little like those bands. If you had to categorize Nirvana among it's contemporaries, I would put them with Hole, Dinosaur Jr, L7, Mudhoney, Melvins, Tad etc.. maybe early Soundgarden. What Nirvana did is to take their influences and make that kind of music popular on a level that it never had been up to that point. They made alternative music that was so good that it became the new mainstream.
Siamese Dream Is the epitome of 90s records for me. The band never really did anything for me beyond that one record but in my opinion, it is a perfect encapsulation of the spirit of the decade and the album is technically flawless.
Siamese dream is really good is their best album, but idk why i only listen to Zeitgeist that i really didn't enjoy when was released, but now? idk why but grew on me and is a really good compilation of late 90/early 00 sounds for some reason, not a masterpiece but is really entretaining for me in 2022.

I really like Violator. It's odd hearing it described as a pop album though. It's always felt like an 80s new wave album that simply came out late to me.
What? Bro it’s absolutely a pop album. Listen to Disintegration by The Cure (another easy 10 album) and listen to Violator. Ones alt rock and ones alt pop very clearly.
Morphine´s Cure for Pain is a 10! They had such an original sound and charisma, that nobody even tried to copy the sound. One of the true greatest bands of the 90´s!
"A Storm In Heaven", The Verve's first album (not the album with Bittersweet Symphony on it, although that album is also pretty awesome) is an easy 10/10 to me. A hugely underrated classic.
In my opinion for my 10/10 albums of the 90's: Green Day - Dookie Bon Jovi - Keep The Faith Weezer - The Blue Album Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape Oasis - Definitely Maybe Blur - Parklife Nirvana - Nevermind Pearl Jam - Ten Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction Blink-182 - Enema Of The State
@@guitaristssuck8979 what song on there sounds like The Beatles? virtually nothing off Oasis’s first album sounds Lennon or McCartney-esque, besides maybe the Lennon-twang of Liams voice. “definitely maybe” sounds more like the Stone Roses!!!
Good list. There’s quite a few additional albums I think are 10s, especially in the metal world. Entombed-Left Hand Path Megadeth-Rust in Peace Soundgarden-Badmotorfinger Rage Against the Machine-S/T Alice In Chains-Dirt Atheist-Unquestionable Prescence Suffocation-Effigy of the Forgotten
I think the 90s deserve a second video, there are lots of clear 10s that Anthony didn't mention. The 90s were absolutely amazing for music. My Bloody Valentine - Loveless, Jeff Buckley - Grace, Fishmans - Long Season, Radiohead - OK Computer, Slowdive - Souvlaki ...and the list probably goes on further
He sadly doesn't like Long Season and he mentioned that Fishmans were a hit or miss for him. I'll never forget that he said the live album was just okay, nothing amazing :c
He also doesnt like Souvlaki that much. Tbh I was pretty shocked that he didnt mention The Glow pt2 in the last episode bcuz his toughts about it were pretty clear to me that he fuckin loves this album but heh what a surprise
The 90s was an amazing era for music, especially for rock and metal, the fact that there was so many albums not included just shows how good it was. Some albums i would've personally included. In Utero - Nirvana Dirt -Alice in Chains Siamese Dream - The Smashing Pumpkins OK Computer - Radiohead Rage Against the Machine - RATM Edit: Removed some, and Adding some Extras. Symbolic- Death Grace- Jeff Buckley System of a Down- SOAD Edit 2: Removed More, Adding More Illmatic- Nas None So Vile- Cryptopsy Loveless- My Bloody Valentine Filosofem- Burzum The Downward Spiral- Nine Inch Nails
So many great albums in the 90’s. Obviously, he only named 5 albums, which leaves many, many albums out. I agree with all of the albums on his list. Off the top of my head, here’s a few more: 1. Nas - Illmatic. In my opinion, the best rap album of all time, tied with Enter the Wu Tang Clan. 2. Radiohead - OK Computer. For obvious reasons. The best and most influential alternative rock album of the 90s, and arguably Radiohead’s best record. 3. Radiohead - The Bends. Radiohead’s breakout record and one of the best, most timeless recordings of angsty 90s rock. 4. Oasis - What’s the Story Morning Glory. The pinnacle of Brit-pop stadium rock. The Gallaghers were not the most skilled musicians ever, but this album is just pure magic. The passion, spirit and flow of this album encapsulates a unique moment in rock music that took Britain by storm in 1995. There are so many iconic songs on this album. Oasis sadly never reached this level again, but this album remains a tribute to that brief period of time when they were one of the best bands in the world. 5. Blur - Park Life. The ultimate Brit Pop record, just a brilliant culmination of the era.
I would have to add 2 personally: Ready to Die by Biggie Smalls and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins, both are no skip masterpieces imo
When The Pawn... is a ten to me. Amazing rebellious songwriting and vocal performances. God I love when Apple's voice quivers. And Brion's piano rock production is just impeccable.
@@jefficient1 I heavily disagree. That album has some of the best songwriting of all time and is up there with the TPABs and the Marquee Moon's and the Velvet Undergrounds imo. Concept was perfectly executed, production is impeccable (especially the percussion). Respect your opinion tho.

Backed by gorgeous instrumentals that nod to his musical roots and his past career while also being a unique style among his vast discography. A little surprised to not see it here but also it’s understandable as the 10/10 status is very sacred and what one considers a 10/10 isn’t to someone else, and I understand Billy Corgan’s unique voice makes it hard for people to get into this band

The production on both records you mention is absolute top tier too.
Have you ever watched the mystery of chessboxing?
Some 10s from the 90s for me are
Monster Magnet - Dopes to Infinity
Melvins - Houdini
Kyuss - Welcome to Sky Valley
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Alice in Chains - Dirt
Sleep - Holy Mountain
Judas Priest - Painkiller
Houdini is very good. Stoner Witch gets a 10 for me. "At the Stake" is one of the greatest Melvins songs ever, imo.
Good
Tell me you are a pothead without telling me that you smoke weed.
Houdini and Painkiller are beautiful and heavy, good call
I would switch Houdini with Lysol, heavily influential with one of the best intos to an album ever. Honestly their Best album.
Grace by Jeff Buckley is a perfect 10 for me. It gets its due but I still feel like it’s so under appreciated. Those songs might just be the best male vocal performances on wax for the whole decade.
I'd say that goes to Mark Hollis. But Grace is definitely a 10.
@@echosmyron1278 Hard disagree. But to each their own off course
@@ryanbazail The vocal links on Eternal Life are so choice though. It's not mediocre at all.
In my view the absence of The Lonesome Crowded West and Loveless in this video is absolutely ridiculous, especially considering fucking Nevermind made it
Mark Hollis and The Laughing Stock are both easy 10s for me as well
Massive Attack - Mezzanine
@@colinstevens2462 Fantano didn't say these were the ONLY 10s from the 90s.
i LOVE Jeff Buckley, but i have a hard time giving Grace a 10. definitely an 8 or a 9, but there are definitely one or two duds on the track list, and personally i’ve never found Jeff’s lyrics to be that good. you can tell he’s shooting for something poetic and sensitive, but it comes off more so as really vague and melodramatic. Jeff was absolutely capable of creating an album that’s a 10 out of 10 tho, and it is a damn shame he wasn’t around long enough to live up to that potential
Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by The Smashing Pumpkins are my favourite '90s albums.
Lot of filler in melon collie but it has one cd worth of genius

JLP is amazing. I would add Grace and HoLV to my 10s. And also OK Computer but I feel a little too NPC to bring that up.

Definitely think that Grace by Jeff Buckley also is a solid 10/10. Such a raw and moving cut by an artist that sadly passed away too soon

top 3 in 90s for me
That album sounds so ethereal, feels very cinematic, and is very dynamic aswell. Also 1500s church hymn to Grunge hard rock Banger WTF
look, its a great album but it's a little overdone in some places. the album version of Grace is just a bit overblown imo, compared to the live versions he did around the time. not quite a 10/10 but I think he had a 10/10 album in him, his death is such a shame
@@TheLetterH111 honestly o agree and I love the album to death. It’s not perfect but it is quite beautiful
Dynamo by Soda Stereo is definitely a 10/10. The impact it had on the Latin American music landscape of the moment, inspiring thousands to turn to a more atmospheric, experimental and sophisticated sound yet maintaining that raw power of Latin rock is incredible. But also the group manages to take the shoegaze aesthetic (only one year after loveless dropped) and make it their own, giving it a very unique spin and pushing it forward even more.

think Portishead’s “Dummy” deserves an honorable mention on this list as well - one of the most subtly influential records of the decade
Yes. I would also say, for the same reasons, Lonesome Crowded West by Modest Mouse. All the 90's output of Modest Mouse was so insanely influential that I don't think people will ever realize the reach of it. Same thing with my other mention here - The Flaming Lips - Soft Bulletin.
For sure, Dummy should have a spot on a list like this. I'd also say Faithless' Reverence.

Stoned is actually a ridiculously good song that people seem to sleep on
It’s honestly a decent album.
It’s honestly a super cozy and nice album to have on. I dig
Pavement’s Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain really is the 10 of the Indie Rock genre for me, it encapsulates that 90s energy perfectly and the album is just fantastic from start to finish

Agreed except Hit the Plane Down
Pavement is honestly so lame compared to Silver Jews.
NIN’s The Downward Spiral would be my add on for this list. Such a perfect visceral blend of industrial music with classic rock influences. Not to mention the amazing sample usage for the times.
No Ok Computer? :(
I'm sad Anthony, and you caused my deep-rooted sadness which is currently welling up in the bottom of my soul.

@@sunflowersamurai10 It is. Most definitely.

If you listen to radiohead you already have sadness welling up in the bottom of your soul
‘Dirt’ - Alice In Chains is in my opinion, the best rock/grunge/metal album of the 90s. AIC always gets overlooked by Nirvana, but Alice In Chains was way better. IMO
Couldn’t agree more. So many highs and lows, and is crushingly dark and raw. Can’t beat their musicality either.
Agree 100%. No Teen Spirit and Layne died too late for people to drool over them. Image is fucking everything, man.
Easily a 10/10 such a raw album so much talent. Surprised it wasnt on here
I'll be excited to find "OK Computer" by Radiohead on fantano's 0/10 list for the 90s :D
I'd throw Talk Talk's Laughing Stock in this list as well. Moody, atmospheric, introspective; its a perfect album for me.
Plus Myrhmann is a an incredible opener that perfectly sets the tone for the rest of the album.
OK Computer - Radiohead??
I don’t think these are all the 10/10 Albums because there are some albums missing that I know he gave a 10 Like
Fugazi’s Repeater
Loveless
Blue Album
Yank Crime
Homogenic
Things Fall Apart
Nas Illmatic
Soundtrack For The Blind
If Your Feeling Sinister
Bone Machine
He gave it a 10 on RYM
Idk man on the video about TPAB taking over OK Computer as the highest rated album on RYM, he made it clear that he much preferred TPAB to OK Computer, which implies he doesn’t think it’s a 10
@@R-H-B He gave it a 10/10 on RYM (5/5 stars) so yeah it’s a 10 to him. You know you can prefer some albums over others, even if they’re both 10s to you, right? Guess since he ranked TPAB as the #1 album of the 2010s, it just implies the other albums he gave a 10 that decade aren’t 10s anymore.
Some of my personal 10's from the 90's are:
Ween - The Mollusk
Björk - Homogenic
Primal Scream - Screamadelica
Mr. Bungle - California
Gustavo Cerati - Bocanada
Mos Def - Black on Both Sides
The Roots - Things Fall Apart
Oöphoi - Behind The Wall Of Sleep
OutKast - ATLiens
Peshay - Studio Mix (this one was actually released in 2017, but it was recorded in 1996, so it counts for me, plus i really love it)
Maybe these aren't objective 10's, they are really just some of my personal favorites.

All great mentions you got there. For all the memeing around it, every time I listen through The Mollusk I still get hyped the moment Ocean Man starts playing.

Way more interesting choices here, i was shocked of how mainstream Melons list was ,he didn't have a single weirdo pick
@@andrei11dr I think that's somewhat the point of the list
36 Chambers is the definition of a 10. Each member brings their own unique style on that album to the best of their abilities, and it makes for one of the best hip hop albums of all time. Only Wu Tang album better in my opinion is Supreme Clientele
50 shades of ass 😭😭😭
Why not
I remember Anthony saying something along the lines of "this is the hip hop equivalent of a hardcore punk album" back in the day and I totally agree. So much energy and so much passion. Both very fun to listen to but also thought provoking. True classic.
Liquid swords better
You could say its nothing to fuck with?
I would put Siamese Dream, Achtung Baby, OK Computer, The Downward Spiral, Mezzanine, Dummy, Ten, and Illmatic for 10/10
You know Fantano wouldn't give a 10 to Ten. Pearl Jam seems to be the equivalent to screeching in his ears.
Love the Ten pick here
This video should be way longer than most other decades. Maybe the 60s should be equally as long.
the fact there is no Siamese Dream discredits the whole list
Finally someone mentions Ten, zero bad songs on the album
Love the list. I would have to say that Siamese Dream, Low End Theory, Illmatic and Rage's First album are 10s to me. Lauryn Hill to this day is one of the best influences in hip-hop
And rages second album
Evil Empire and Rage Against the Machine - Self Titled, are definitely 9s or 10s but Anthony just named a couple of 10s from the decade, not saying these are the only ones
I would have thought illmatic as well for sure

Surprised you didn't mention The Downward Spiral, that's one of the best records of the 90s imo
Only other comment is that I think In Utero is a better record than Nevermind
I like in utero more too.
it's not necessarily the betterness of nevermind, but the album that got the band and this certain genre going, The Project that really took the 90s rock scenery by storm. i think all the positive impact nevermind had on music is so unneglectable that it beats the potential upper hand In Utero has quality-wise.
Both can be 10s and prefer one over the other I personally prefer in utero as well but it wouldn't be right to give nevermind any less than a 10 because truthfully both are masterpieces and its only really a matter of taste and mood that separates them
My 10’s:
Boards of Canada - Music Has the Right to Children
Fishmans - Long Season
Bjork - Homogenic
Stereolab - Dots and Loops
Ween - The Mollusk (I can’t tell if it’s a 10 or a 5)

"Endless, Nameless" is an unofficial official release. It was intended to be on the album, but the label removed it. Most releases have "Something in the Way" as the last track. FYI the version of "Endless" from the "With the Lights Out" boxset is the best version of that song.
AFAIK it was hidden 10 minutes after the end of Something in the Way on the same track. So it wasn't removed from the original entirely
The live version they played at the Paramount Theatre is pretty good
Nope
I think I read that Krist was trying and failing to play the “Lithium” bassline, and him and the rest of the band just started fucking around.
It was a hidden track
Mezzanine was my album of the 90s. Been rocking Massive Attack since day1 and the switch up blew me away. When put the wax on for the first time with the bassline on Angel was literally in deep, then Risingson took me even deeper, Teardrop made me think I would never come back. I would argue that not only is it the album of the 90s but them first 3 tracks may be the best sequence in modern music. Honourable mentions to Homogenic, OK Computer, Illmatic and Music Has the Right to Children
Blue line's, Endtroducing, Becoming X and Mezzanine - god the 90's were the best.

No Alice In Chains? It’s a shame I think they are the best grunge band. Still enjoyed the rest !
It's impressive how AiC still hits just as hard after all these years despite all the post-grunge bros unconsciously trying to ruin the band's legacy with their terrible Layne Staley impressions.
I would suggest including RHCP's Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Soundgarden's Superunknown respectfully
Definitely bssm
BSSM is a masterpiece
Soundgarden, yes. Anthony Keidis is a lousy singer, horrible lyricist, and at that time an even worse person.
superunkown is great but i cant see it as a ten personally
I would go with Bad Motor Finger over Superunknown, just my opinion.
Rage Against The Machine debut album is a 10 for me. One of the best ways to debut. Everything in that album showcased what RATM as a band is what they about and what they write/ stand about and how can I forget that amazing Album Cover that is a splice of what you can expect on the album. Which is Protest and Rage.
And Probably Megadeth's Rust in Peace is a close 10 for me although I think it's a 8-9 just want to point how good that album is Riff wise and Lyrics wise the band just slayed that album.
yeah 100%
It was pretty much over after that, bar a few songs.

Nirvana doesn't sound like any other artist of that decade. While STP, Soundgarden, Alice in chains, and pearljams music sounded much more similar.
@@waynetables6414 Nirvana were grunge. So strange how people are angry at words.
@@alienextraterrestrial113 OK millennialtard and those three are better than overrated Nirvana. Cope.
Siamese Dream Is the epitome of 90s records for me. The band never really did anything for me beyond that one record but in my opinion, it is a perfect encapsulation of the spirit of the decade and the album is technically flawless.
that album is great but I have to say, I find Mellon Collie more impressive as an album
Cherub Rock will never get old. One of my all time favorite rock songs.
To bad I can't listen to the whole album. Anyone know where I can find it?

I didn't expect that you would dedicate this video to covering 6 Ween albums (GodWeenSatan: The Oneness through The Mollusk) but I have to say, I completely agree with you.

@@olegbutt07 Thanks! I forgot about GY!BE - F♯ A♯ ∞. That one's also a 10 for sure.
@@mezner13 for sure, just as good as Lift Yr Skinny Fists in my opinion
I really like Violator. It's odd hearing it described as a pop album though. It's always felt like an 80s new wave album that simply came out late to me.
What? Bro it’s absolutely a pop album.
Listen to Disintegration by The Cure (another easy 10 album) and listen to Violator. Ones alt rock and ones alt pop very clearly.
Morphine´s Cure for Pain is a 10!
They had such an original sound and charisma, that nobody even tried to copy the sound.
One of the true greatest bands of the 90´s!
Not quite a full 10 for me but I respect this pick.
@@jeffb1430 And for me, the album Yes is a solid 10 too...
"A Storm In Heaven", The Verve's first album (not the album with Bittersweet Symphony on it, although that album is also pretty awesome) is an easy 10/10 to me. A hugely underrated classic.
In my opinion for my 10/10 albums of the 90's:
Green Day - Dookie
Bon Jovi - Keep The Faith
Weezer - The Blue Album
Foo Fighters - The Colour And The Shape
Oasis - Definitely Maybe
Blur - Parklife
Nirvana - Nevermind
Pearl Jam - Ten
Megadeth - Countdown To Extinction
Blink-182 - Enema Of The State
none of those albums are 10
@@josephk8469 ++
@@josephk8469 definitely maybe is an 11/10
one of the greatest debut albums ever made
@@fshoaps written by Lennon/McCartney and some more
@@guitaristssuck8979 what song on there sounds like The Beatles? virtually nothing off Oasis’s first album sounds Lennon or McCartney-esque, besides maybe the Lennon-twang of Liams voice.
“definitely maybe” sounds more like the Stone Roses!!!
Good list. There’s quite a few additional albums I think are 10s, especially in the metal world.
Entombed-Left Hand Path
Megadeth-Rust in Peace
Soundgarden-Badmotorfinger
Rage Against the Machine-S/T
Alice In Chains-Dirt
Atheist-Unquestionable Prescence
Suffocation-Effigy of the Forgotten
Death-Symbolic and Left Hand Path are decade defining metal records
you forgot symbolic… and rust in peace is trash 🤠
I think the 90s deserve a second video, there are lots of clear 10s that Anthony didn't mention. The 90s were absolutely amazing for music.
My Bloody Valentine - Loveless, Jeff Buckley - Grace, Fishmans - Long Season, Radiohead - OK Computer, Slowdive - Souvlaki
...and the list probably goes on further
He sadly doesn't like Long Season and he mentioned that Fishmans were a hit or miss for him. I'll never forget that he said the live album was just okay, nothing amazing :c
He also doesnt like Souvlaki that much. Tbh I was pretty shocked that he didnt mention The Glow pt2 in the last episode bcuz his toughts about it were pretty clear to me that he fuckin loves this album but heh what a surprise
I do wonder how Fanny feels about Grace
surprised swans- soundtracks for the blind didn't make it
Aphex Twin
The 90s was an amazing era for music, especially for rock and metal, the fact that there was so many albums not included just shows how good it was.
Some albums i would've personally included.
In Utero - Nirvana
Dirt -Alice in Chains
Siamese Dream - The Smashing Pumpkins
OK Computer - Radiohead
Rage Against the Machine - RATM
Edit: Removed some, and Adding some Extras.
Symbolic- Death
Grace- Jeff Buckley
System of a Down- SOAD
Edit 2: Removed More, Adding More
Illmatic- Nas
None So Vile- Cryptopsy
Loveless- My Bloody Valentine
Filosofem- Burzum
The Downward Spiral- Nine Inch Nails
So many great albums in the 90’s. Obviously, he only named 5 albums, which leaves many, many albums out.
I agree with all of the albums on his list. Off the top of my head, here’s a few more:
Honestly I prefer Definitely Maybe over Morning Glory, there’s a lot more going on there and the overall quality of the songs are better.
wish atliens or aquemini was mentioned but otherwise i agree with all of this, all amazing and influential projects
Aquemini literally can’t be a 10 because it has Mamacita on it. Still a 9 tho
@@tylersquanto8938 imagine unironically thinking Aquemini by OutKast isnt a 10.......
@@no-vk2qe like I said, Mamacita unfortunately exists on the track list
I would have to add 2 personally: Ready to Die by Biggie Smalls and Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness by Smashing Pumpkins, both are no skip masterpieces imo
yeah kinda hoped he would put ready to die on there but deep down knew he wouldn't😥
Mellon collie is too bloated. Gish and Siamese are better
I would say Siamese Dream is their best work
Siamese dream>>>
Mellon collie has MANY SKIPS, great record tho
When The Pawn... is a ten to me. Amazing rebellious songwriting and vocal performances. God I love when Apple's voice quivers. And Brion's piano rock production is just impeccable.
@@jefficient1 I heavily disagree. That album has some of the best songwriting of all time and is up there with the TPABs and the Marquee Moon's and the Velvet Undergrounds imo. Concept was perfectly executed, production is impeccable (especially the percussion). Respect your opinion tho.
100%. One of my favorite albums ever period
