I thought this was over blown, but I spoke with my cop friend last Sunday and he said that a wave of cop that he knows personally have either retired or quit, even some with less than a year on the job.
There are a number of factors
    1. Anti-Cop attitude from the communities.
    2. Ridiculously low starting salary
    3. Bail reform
    4. Impossible procedures which makes it hard to do their jobs.
    5. Low morale
    6. They don't have the support of the courts and the DA's office or elected officials.
    6. Better pay offered by other jurisdictions.

Its not just the NYPD where that's happening. Its happening in most major cities. I am an officer in Washington DC 26 years on the job and many people with my time and age have retired. The younger officers who are often college educated bail out as they have options rather than put up with the BS. Couple that with bail reform BS here, a progressive idiot prosecutor's office that treats you like you are the true criminal, and people are leaving in droves. If I didn't have a daughter in college, I'd be gone myself. Two more years when she graduates, I'm out.

Cops didn’t care to hear my side of it they just processed me and dumped me in jail. Only reason I’m out on bail was a magistrate cared enough to realize I would possibly loose my job for a no call no show cause I was stuck there overnight. That’s in SW Pennsylvania btw the judge only hit me for bail on 1 aggravated assault charge then cut my bail from 5k to 2500. Still have a preliminary hearing to deal with. Judges need more flexibility and not less. Minor crimes always lead to big crimes with casualties if not stopped right away. Like the guy that keeps telling his wife, "oh I won't hit you again," then he does it until finally the wife ends the relationship and files for divorce and the abuser can't take the warranted rejection. We live in the technology age, not 1700s, at our fingertips a cop can know if a thug should be in possession of a firearm, despite 2A Rights for law abiding citizens. Your Marxist mockery of our Constitutional Rights, and innocent until proven guilty is what anger authoritarian countries like China and Korea. Btw, sorry democrat mayor's, like Lori Lightfoot, allow thugs 10 to 17 years of age to murder with guns, because she won't enact Gov assisted martial laws. It’s a vicious cycle. It’s true, cops get a lot of hate nowadays and it’s become a thankless job. But it’s not like cops themselves have played no role in that. You have numerous instances of cops abusing their authority and using excessive force. Respect is earned, but instead of trying to earn back the community’s respect, they’ve only doubled down on those practices. So the community reacts to them the way it does, and the hate only intensifies.

When asked if she had facts and evidence to support her bill ,she responded that "she did not need any.."
Well here's a fact : concealed carry holders in the state of New York commit fewer crimes than New York police officers commit...
