AT&T Enhanced Push To Talk: A Guided Tour | Pocketnow

  • Back when voice communication was still king, phone calls weren't the only game in town. Some carriers offered a service called "push-to-talk" - a two-way radio, or walkie-talkie-like solution, for when a phone call just wouldn't do.
In America, most carriers found little traction with PTT. The iDEN-based carrier Nextel now part of Sprint Nextel saw success for a few years offering dispatch service to its customers, at one time numbering around 20 million people. These days, that number has shrunk to below 5 million, but other carriers are still trying to pick the Nextel carcass clean. The most dedicated PTT competitor these days is the nation's second-largest, AT&T.
Recently, AT&T rebooted its own PTT offering for North America, switching to an app-based service, adding interoperability and other features, and broadening its device selection. Thanks to our friends at the carrier, we've secured some handsets to check it out. Does the new "Enhanced PTT" offer a compelling experience? Should the millions of Sprint subscribers about to be kicked off the old iDEN network consider it a viable alternative? What's the big deal about push-to-talk anyway? For the answers to these questions and more, check out our guided video tour above.

I really really like push-to-talk. I think all phones, should have this feature. Hell!... even the Apple watch has it now. Which is pretty cool. I use to have a Nextel back in the day. The cellphone service sucked. However, that push-to-talk, was great. It was made to "Get Things Done!" "Period!" The older I get, the less I care about texting. Just tell me, what the hell do ya' want, for Christ's sake!"

I think its amazing how many peeps have no clue what true PTT is and how valuable it can be for business... For one, it gets around most handsfree laws!

Great Review! This service is great - I have been using it since AT&T launched it. Compared to Voxer, which is NOT free anymore and frequently goes down, and other downloadable free PTT apps, which are all lackluster in my opinion, AT&T's service is the best on the market.

There is more to it than an over-the-top walkie talkie app. I have found it very reliable and the presence feature is cool. Bottom line is, if you have a business, there is no faster, easier way to speak to employees that are out in the field.

insightful video. Always wondered what push-to-talk was for. never used it. I see great ideas for an offgrid solution using an android UI on real walkie-talkies...

I've got a question. There're a lot of "push-to-talk" apps on the android market, for example, WeChat. So any smartphone can use those apps which they are updated more regularly. So why bother using the AT&T push-to-talk? :D

yea the PTB couldn't track who you was with Nextel, thus dismantling the system, now they are attempting to do the same with tracking mechs in place, hence this video

Seems to me like a slightly revised and somewhat upgraded version of the simulated ptt that they tried to make happen during the att/Cingular merger a while back

ATT Enhanced Push to Talk is available on the iphone 5 and 4s. It also works over Wifi so it you don't have cellular coverage but have Wifi like in businesses with multiple buildings you are still covered.

Nobody wants to help you sit in a box with egg foam, haha. poor baby. So this saves you money instead of making a real phone call, ok. Maybe good for a business but the rest of us, text messaging. Who do you really want to talk to, most dont even use there cel phone for real calls. Why they did away with text pagers when thats all most of us do.
