Solution: Disk Erase Failed with error: Couldn't unmount disk mac
Fantastic video, short and to the point. Never used Terminal before, but you helped me be able to erase a locked disk that Disk Utility couldn't do. Thanks again!
Unmounting disk
Error -69877: couldn't open device
Can you help keep?
I tried Almost 10 videos and tricks to find the solution and None of them works.
Just only your tricks works..
Thank you for sharing the ultimate solution.
Thank you so much. I was able to get my drive back up and running. This was really helpful!
Yesssssss thank you! After I entered the command prompt to erase my disk I received the error saying the name was not correct. Solution was to use the exact case sensitive existing name of my drive, then it worked. Thank you!
Hi Daniel.
Although your video didn't help me solve my problem but I wanna thank you for your effort. Kept getting "Error 698877: Couldn't open device" even after following your video step by step and your advice given at the comment section. Even then I am glad I learnt something new using the mac's Terminal and it was interesting; just like the old days using DOS.
Spent two days trying to format my used 64 GB Sandisk microSD card in order to use them for my dash-cam recorder and finally I managed to have it resolved. I needed to format it to FAT32 as required by my new dash-cam. My Mac Disk utility kept failing to format it and gave an error msg "Couldn't modify partition map". I inserted my micro SD card into an adaptor and mounted it via the SD card slot and I guess that could be the problem. It got resolved when I used a USB 3.0 card reader instead and connected the USB cable on my Mac (macOS Sierra 10.12.16). Initial test using a used 16gb microSD worked with only one try. However with the 64gb microSD it ran with some errors but after 2-3 tries including repairing using the utility "First Aid" and Presto!!!!... was successful.
Don't ask my why or how it worked. But it did and I am satisfied.
Rgds,
Amir from Singapore 😊

Error: -69877: Couldn't open device
what to do? Please help
i got an error eraseDisk command
unable to write to the last block of the device
2:07: "..do a disk util on a raised disk.." ????
Although I'm able to zoom in.. I can't see what you're typing in the command line. Moreover, the transcript is no help.
PS
Some feedback about the demo: Any time I'm able inputting information into the command line, for example:
disk description, or
disk names.... or other such command prompts, it very helpful and eliminates typo's if your demonstration shows that you can 'cut and paste' these descriptions . Hope that makes sens?
thanks for your response in advance.
Perhaps changing the resolution to HD will help
Anyhow.. here's the command
diskutil eraseDisk FAT32 NONAME MBRFormat /dev/disk1
thanks for the fast reply.. good news, I'm currently backing up my Mac onto my external HD (250GB) and all it took was like maybe 12 tries.. and all I did was continue to push "Erase" in the disk utility program. Dumb luck and a bit of tenacity.
PS
liked, and subscribed.
Thanks again.

Same here!
use this way
Same here...
You have to disconnect the USB HDD then insert it back in. Once you've done that, the processes using that USB HDD will be killed. You then run the commands within your terminal
Could not unmount... Error: -69888: Couldn't unmount disk...
that helped thanks
hi i tried doing this on my 32 gb hard disk now i can see only 30 gb could you suggest
Annira Avinash, do a 'df - h' within a terminal window to confirm all space is available
i'm not very sure hw that'z done where do i input that command i just followed your video and did exactly
hi Daniel i dnt hve idea how its done could u drop m a detail screen shot hw its done to ma mail id annira.avin@gmail.com
Hi Annira, The command will show you the available space. technicalconfessions.com/temp/forAnnira.png
You will be able to see %used. If there's 0% used then it's absolutely empty. Sometimes there's some block on the hard drive that not writable any therefore you might have some space taken up already.
