    Glad to see an update on your Manitoba maples. They look much like the ones that grow below the pond on our property, so I think they are very natural looking. Here they're called boxelder trees, and they always have lots of scars and knobby areas on their trunks.

    Good job Nigel, I bought a bunch of Japanese Larch whips here in the UK which I have three in pots and two in the ground. The ones in the ground are ahead of the potted trees with regards the needles coming out and foliage density and they are all from the same stock so that already indicates better growth in the ground. They are just sticks in mud at the moment tho, a long way to go.

    Something that I do, and you can try if you want. Instead of wrapping rubber or hose around a branch to attach a guy wire, I drill a hole straight thru the branch just big enough to thread the guy wire thru, and I use fine wire for this. I then bend a very small, flat loop in the top of the wire so it can't pull through, and then anchor the bottom end of the wire however. I got this idea from the 'Treehouse Master' cable show, where they have found that it does less damage to a tree by drilling straight into it to support a treehouse than to wrap something around it. This method of attaching guy wires is less noticable, and I believe safer for the tree. My idea was reinforced when I noticed that Arthur Joura had done the same thing to a maple he brought to our club presentation a few years ago. I've used it on spruce, Acer Rubrum Maple, and some others, but not larch, but from what I've learned about larch, I think it could work well.

    TIL Box Elder is Manitoba Maple. I recognized the shoots and the dried leafstalk. From the one specimen that I have I have found that these are notorious at putting out suckers and shoots from way down on the trunk.

    I saw a couple of trees there that look like they have seen better days. I was seeing a video the other day that may allow you to put dead trees to use. There is a techniique the Japanese call Tanuki. this is simply wiring or fastening a young live tree to the skeleton of the dead tree. in time, the living tree bonds to the dead wood and it appears to be a single tree.

    Hello Nigel,
    I am not a negative person, I am a Philosopher and a very enthusiastic and joyful person and believe in criticism as a tool for improvement, I very much enjoy arguments and having a good discussion brings me joy, even if you wrongly perceive it as an expression of a negative self.
    I am not discussing that car topic with invalid arguments like your "goods being transported to your home by cars so you already are going against your own norms if you buy goods", because the economic system does not allow alternatives without being able to afford it, and to be able to afford it, you need to be part of the system. It's not like there are no alternatives possible, it's just that they are not wanted by those who established and profit from the existing infrastructure.
    You cannot expect from people to live from air and love alone, it is not my personal choice that we have an economy the way it is built. But still I can have a negative position towards cars and that will never change, and I do not see any connection between cars and Bonsais and never will.
    Well I was only letting you know what I think, that is what a comment section is meant for, how you want to treat this opinion is your choice. If you decide to change this channel, so it focusses on your person and your hobbies, instead of being focussed on Bonsai, it is your choice.
    Maybe you are too involved with this topic I have confronted you with, so that you are unable to change the perspective and follow other perspectives/opinions, I can understand that and it is fully okay if you defend your own interests. I also can understand, that not everyone is able to understand how Google's TH-cam algorithms do work, you don't have to care, it was just a hint.
    I do not intend to offend you or make you feel bad about anything, in future I will refrain from writing comments, so you do not have to be concerned about it anymore and can keep that negativity away from your channel without having to shadowban me.
    Good video, thx for sharing.

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for your reply, I have always made the channel about the entire bonsai experience, how growing bonsai can change your outlook and passions in life. My channel has gone in the direction of photography, fitness, nature, community gardens, etc. Bonsai as a hobby is not something you do that is separate from your lifestyle, it is a part of your lifestyle.
      The channel in the end may be more about finding and developing interests in your life, taking pride in what you do and always thinking about others and the health of our planet.
      The name of my channel "The Bonsai Zone" is about all things that surround bonsai, not just bonsai itself. Many people like to see and learn about me, not just what I do with bonsai, but what I do in life too. I watch ,many TH-camr's and often wonder "What do they like to do besides TH-cam, what are their hobbies and interests? Who is this person I'm watching?" I try and show a bit of this on my channel.
      I think the person growing the bonsai is just as important as the techniques they use. What influences they have in their life and how does that affect the styling of their trees.
      I have always said, bonsai is the person, the tree and the pot. All three elements create a good bonsai. I try and show all three of these elements on my videos.
      My activities in the orchard may not be of interest to many people, but if I inspire just a couple of people to think about planting a fruit tree, then I'm happy! My mission in life is to inspire people to healthy, happy and to respect nature.
      Cars and trucks may not have much to do with bonsai, but they do transport bonsai to shows, meeting and demonstrations. They are mechanical art, just like bonsai is a biological art form. To dismiss any interest in cars and trucks is very dismissive. I try and take an interest in everything, it helps me understand how people think and figure out why they do what they do.
      I think if you added up all the time on my channel, I think you would find 99 percent is directly bonsai related and maybe 1 percent is other activities. You can complain and criticize, but in the end the channel is what I make of it, it is my creation and it may change and grow as I do also. I don't mind criticism, but you seem to be in the minority, many people like to see what I am up to. When you are one of the few people to criticize, I think you need to look at the reasons why you feel compelled to do so.
      Do you feel the need to just concentrate on one activity only and anything from what you expected bothers you?
      Do you like to stay closed minded and not learn about different things in life? That is the feeling I get, that you need to control yourself and to stay the way you are. I see resistance to change, you are happy being the way you are and don't want any outside influences to change your life style and way of thinking. I think you need to expand in all directions.
      I do want you to continue commenting, I am enjoying our conversation, let me know your thoughts and we'll talk again.
      Nigel

      I didn't even know about this. I don't follow any bonsai activities on social media, just because I don't have time. I'm not into the instant bonsai styling contests anyway. Much can be done to make a tree look great right away, but much of this is smoke an mirrors, positioning branches to fill in spots and make a pleasing looking tree initially. To get a truly great structure in a tree takes many years. Many of these instant bonsai never amount to much in the end. I think many demos and contests are just for fun. The real bonsai masters are behind the scenes at major shows and the trees have been worked on for a lifetime or more. I don't want to sound negative, bonsai is a fun hobby and contests like these are a great starting point and fun for everyone!

    • @barnabanza
      @barnabanza 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone, I totally understand your point and your way of thinking. There was 84 artists around the world showing their style. Was so fun to see how people think bonsai around the world. Most of then, was about filling spaces, wiring and bla bla bla like you said. But there were artists that really talked you through the hole bonsai experience. Pretty much like you do to us all the time. And artists that didn’t even spoke a single word during the live and you could understand then perfectly. Was a great day watching the connection between all enthusiasts with questions and answers and why’s and why not. I’m a completely beginner myself, after all of that demos made me feel that I still have a long way to learn about how to think outside the box when it comes down to bonsai. Thanks for the reply Nigel ! I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge and your journey in bonsai! 👏👏👏

    Hi Nigel. Got a lovely Siberian Larch at a nursery in Manitoba. Was going to leave it in the 3.5 gallon grower pot until late winter. and likely wait to hard prune at that time. The apex is taking off so was thinking maybe I need to bring that down now instead of waiting for winter dormancy. Do you think I should wait for winter or hard prune and wire now in grower pot? I did do a pruning of all the long soft green shoots. cheers

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The tree will bleed sap a lot if you prune it off now, it would be best to wait until the tree is dormant. The sap will continue to run down the trunk for a couple of weeks if pruned now. This may not hurt the tree, but the sap is difficult to remove!

I really respect all the work you do, and I wish to make a living off of this kind of stuff. I was just wondering if you have any tips on how to make money from this art form, how you make a living from it, and if I were to make this into my profession, what would I need to major in college for? Generally, people who make a living growing and selling bonsai, apprenticeship in the orient for 5 to 7 very tough years. They then take that knowledge back to their home country and start up a bonsai nursery. It is very difficult to make a living selling bonsai and supplies, but if you have a passion for bonsai and are willing to work hard, learning every day, you can make it!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, they are usually safe, when the tender new leaves do come out, they can be damaged easily by cold weather, but usually there are more leaves tucked away in the shoot that haven't extended yet and these survive and keep the branches growing.

      They are native here and they don't seem to spread out of control, they seem to only live in places where other trees would have a hard time surviving. They can make good firewood so no one seems to complain about them!

    • @TheBonsaiZone
      @TheBonsaiZone  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The best time is when some green is just beginning to show at the end of the buds. Usually this is early April around here. I have seen them successfully collected out of season, but you need to get a lot of root mass to keep them alive and to get them through the next winter.
