    I think that 1 watt might not be enough. I bought a 5 watt laser, and it is cooking the anemones in seconds.

    You shared a lot of the concerns I have with using a laser. Thanks for posting this, encouraged me to utilize manual + biological controls instead.

    My tips: 3 watts is needed a 1 watt is not going to work. Also buy bettwr glasses. The glasses that come in these kits are cheap china glasses and I would not trust them. The laser can blind you faster than your eye will sense it and blink. Survivallasers make great glasses. And lastly moat lasers have a 60 second max duration before they overheat and melt the diode. So 3 to 4 mins is not gonna be good for your laser. It all depends on the heat sinks but china doesnt care, they just want it to last long enough for you not to return it. 30 seconds should be the goal and 60 seconds the max. You may be able to use it for 5 mins but ill bet it will never be as bright after you do. Lasers are NOT a toy, noone should be in the same room when you do this. I lost part of the vision in my eye and had to have surgery and i shined the laser 50 ft away. Funny enough "laser" surgery fixed my "laser" eye wound. Haha. Be careful, and get real glasses.

    Scott, great video! That laser looks like a lot of fun. I had a massive aptasia thing going on so I bought a peppermint shrimp. I never seen him eat one but there all gone. Keep the videos coming!!

  • @Reefgrrl
    @Reefgrrl 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I got a crew of four peppermint shrimp the same day I noticed ONE aiptasia and it was gone within two days - along with, I'm sure, all the ones I couldn't see. I love the idea of being able to burn the suckers into oblivion but I was cringing when I saw how close your fish were to it. This was a good video - I recall watching your first aiptasia-killing laser video when you had just gotten the thing, and you were kind of optimistic if I remember correctly. I guess time always does tell....

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      My fish are a big concern and they're part of the reason I don't use the laser as much as I could. This is the first time I put the laser on camera though I did talk about it on some of my Reef Vlog videos. I always try to give a product a proper test before making a review. It's better that way.

    Have you thought about doing a "pest" nano tank stocked with pesky animals that you remove your main tank, like Aiptasia and majano anemones, mantis shrimps, carnivorous nudibranchs, aggressive SPS corals, fish-eating mushroom polyps, bristle and bobbit worms, hair and bubble algae, and all sorts of other undesirable-yet-interesting organisms?

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I had not thought of or seen a pest only tank. It could be a really cool idea.

  • @Darthbelal
    @Darthbelal 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Amazing no one thought of putting a plug adapter on these lasers so you don't have to worry about draining the battery. Also, being able to mount it to a tripod would be good as well as a low and high power mode for sighting the laser in. Imagine being able to position 2 or 3 of those lasers on a single aptasia using very low power so the anemone doesn't suspect a thing and then, all of sudden, you go Death Star mode on the little beasts......

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A plug in so you can keep blasting at full power would be a huge improvement.

  • @goldslinger
    @goldslinger 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    They have much more powerful lasers now for 60 bucks. One on eBay that is 10 watts or more. Might be worth giving it a second look. They work much better. I will use it on unwanted wanderers of other polyps as well, clove, mushrooms, etc. that are impossible to get at by other means.

  • @ScottM
    @ScottM 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well that ends that idea. I just spied the first aptasia I have ever had in the 5 years since I have been in the hobby. Looking at a DIY zapper wand or Kalk. The location makes it tough to inject the Kalk though. Nice job Scott.

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Scott M thanks! I too have had good luck within kalk. My problem is I have too many in hard to reach locations. If you make the wand you should do a video. I'd love to see it.

  • @mnelson10000
    @mnelson10000 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    Damn that was entertaining!! haha I know you're worried about the clam, but maybe you can transfer the clam to the frag tank for a month or two until a copperband could wipe them out...?

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      mnelson10000 Thanks! I've been thinking about trying one in the frag Tank with the clam in there. I'm less attached to that clam and I could actually catch the fish in there if I needed to pull it out.

    cool man. i had outstanding results with Aptaisia X. turn off all pumps and power heads so the water is still. those aptaisia will suck into the rock but i just blast the hole they ran into. no aptaisia since. i have thought of the laser, but a 3 watt. has a burn distance of 20-30' and goes for 50 miles. i want that. thinking about it for the asteria stars. good thing the laser didn't burn and crack your glass!

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      A 3 watt would be sweet! I don't think the laser will crack glass, but I do think the glass reduces the strength of the laser on the aptaisia.

  • @cannerbernerd1836

    interesting idea. For me, peppermint shrimp would only eat the very small apes, but you can inject the larger ones, or just FIRE THE LAZER!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Hey Scotty, been waiting for one of your vids all week, we were starting to get worried bout you over on CJ's live shack. lol I'm surprised a little you gave it a 4 more like a 2 n half. I was hoping the clown wasn't going to swim through it and get chopped in half. Zaptasia 4 me

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I love Reef shack! it's just on at a time that's hard for me. LOL I don't think it could chop the clown in half, but 2 out of 10 might have been a better ratting.

      Don't Filefish only go after young Aiptasia? If you have any that are established i'm told Filefish won't touch them.

    I've had great success with peppermint shrimp but I added them as soon as I spotted aiptasia. They're a great addition to a reef anyway.

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Linda's Reef I've had good luck with them too. The problem is I need a lot for my system and that gets expensive.

    • @lindasreef
      @lindasreef 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't depend upon the size of your system but on how bad the aiptasia infestation is and they can find the ones you can't see at the back. They are such cool little guys anyway.

    • @MileHighReefers
      @MileHighReefers  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      In my experience it takes multiples before they want to go after aiptasia. I'm guising it has to do with them competing for food. Whenever I've added 1 or 2 they haven't had ant interest in them.

    Don't know why your using those red glasses with that particular laser . you must use the proper OD-4 rated and up. glasses you may as well use sun glasses ..they don't work either .so if your watching this don't use the supplied glasses from your kit . you will damage your eyes for good.

    Hello MHR:
    Going the Laser route, please advise or provide eBay details/linky. So 3watt is ideal? Thank you.

      3 watt sounds awesome. I think the most important features are an adjustable beam and it should come with batteries and a charger.

    2 things my friend. 1. Nice video. 2. When it comes to lasers for killing Aiptasia you should do daily laser treatments. Also, you should make sure you destroy the arms of the Aiptasia so it cannot feed. If it cannot feed, it cannot regrow. Those stringy things were likely little tendrils for gathering nutrition. I can almost guarantee if you treated 2-3 Aiptasia daily for 5-7 days they would not come back. Most of mine were destroyed between the 3-5 day period.
