richard rodney did some of his best work here...this film is an absolute classic in all departments, casting, direction and soundtrack. Thanks for posting
It's a beautiful piece of music... and a greatly underrated film. Ed Begley's performance is spot on and frightening. Caine's Harry Palmer should have gone on and had more films...
the young girl in the fur coat on the train was none other than susan george who went on to become a major crush for thousands of english scoolboys like myself...she was the unfortunate female lead in straw dogs...donald sutherland also was in the film in his early, english years spent in the trenches of bit-parts. The synching of this montage is absolutely first-class work. ...you should be in pictures, as they say!
Me too! It's coming up to ten years since one Xmas the BBC1 showed it late night and I became hooked. I love it's dreamlike quality in places and its overall 60sness. Its like the Blow Up of spy movies. Caine has always been my fave actor, and this is my fave film.
Vladek Sheybal , Karl Malden and Caine . Plus that fantastic score and stunning winter locations - and they had the Balls to let Ken Russell direct ! Almost a Great Film.....let down by slightly ludicrous ending.
I adore this music. I can't understand why it is sooo difficult to get hold of. It isn't on the list of Richard Rodney Bennet's tracks on Spotify... it doesn't seem to be available on CD. Thanks for posting it :-).
The main theme to this movie has to be one of the best of the 1960's-next to Henry Mancini for "Breakfast at Tiffany's" (aka 'Moon River') and "Wait Until Dark", Maurice Jarre for "Doctor Zhivago" (aka 'Lara's Theme), Herbie Hancock for "Blow Up", and any of the main themes that John Barry did for the James Bond series with Sean Connery.
Watched the Ipcress file yesterday. Fantastic film, now have to catch this one too, especially cause its by mad Ken Russell. Absolutely great edit mate, looks like a marvelous flick.
Ok I stand corrected, there only THREE pianos but the Stravinsky sonority must still have been an influence. The pianists were RRB Susan Bradshaw (not MW though they did work alot together duetting) and Thea Musgrave (who also doubled Celesta and Harpsichord.) There is a harp but no other strings just wind and brass. Jeanne Loriod (Messiaen's sister in law noted for her Turangalila part) played the Ondes Martenot (Cynthia a Loriod pupil, was to play RRB's parts later in his career).
@caliandris thanks for your interest. If you listen carefully, you can hear the needle on vinyl. However, there is a boot CD "Billion Dollar Caine" with some dodgey additional film audio recorded from video tape.
the piano is romantic....lovely...remind me somethin of my past...i cannot explain....is like to see two persons the try to kiss each other..but they are impossible to do ...this is the image evcocated but his music...or the fliyng of an insect like a bee...
another gem of a title sequence from the legendary maurice binder and a dramatic eerie score from richard rodney bennett..........beautiful female lead Françoise Dorléac was sadly killed in a motor accident just as the movie was being completed
It is also of interest that around this time Bennett had taken part in a performance of Stravinsky's Les Noces with Nijinska 3 other pianists at the ROH including Edmund Rubbra and MW (again who is often did two piano music with) and also John Lanchberry (who would be director of both Sydney OH and ROH Covent Garden). This must have made him decide on the 4 pianos. I JUST SAW IT'S NOT A THEREMIN BUT AN ONDES MARTENOT. Cynthia Millar played all his parts.
Not one of Ken Russell's best movies but sufficiently offbeat to make it watchable and the music is a definite bonus. I had an LP (mono version) of this which cost me an arm and a leg from a shop in Soho in the early 80's. It was part of a vinyl collection which I regret parting with to this very day. I hate to think what sort of silly price a copy would command now.
Great information - thanks for your comment/s! Leo: Harry hey, what do you think, huh? Isn't she something? Palmer: Yeah, she's great. How's the wife and kids, Leo?
Just read a book on RRB Omnibus Press by Anthony meredith, well worth a read. I believe as well as lp it was available on MC too from c1968 but never cd officially, its scoring is notable for the fact it uses NO strings but FOUR PIANOS (played by RRB Malcolm Williamson Thea Musgrave and I believe Marcus Dods who was MD on things like Far from the Madding Crowd Equus and Murder on the OE) wind and brass and THEREMIN. It also has sections of Shoastakovich Symphony (No. 7) 'Leningrad'.
soundtrack, did you put this montage together yourself? It's excellent, especially all the helmets bouncing up and down, perfectly synched to the theme...if you did, bravo!
[Harry is shown a terminal of the Brain] Palmer: What does it do, tell fortunes? Leo: It *makes* fortunes: ours! Just a little toy, but it puts the MI5 and the CIA back into the Stone Age.
I like this film, I have it along with the first two in my collection, but I can't find the last two. "Bullet to Beijing" and "Midnight in Saint Petersburg".
@leemcuk1 7. at which time or in which movie scene does this phrase appears? 2. As always, sad she died a tad after acting in this movie. 3. Oh yeah ;)

Great music, as ever, from Richard Rodney Bennett, from a typically OTT yet enjoyable Ken Russell film. Thanks for posting!
The computer voice on the phone is Donald Sutherland.

Great montage from a classic film! Ken Russell at his absolute best with a stylish and and well-paced direction.

Hey thanks Mm55.
+Mathemagical55 yes
Francoise Dorleac was such a beauty! I believe she was the sister of Catherine Deneuve.BTW thanks ajohms for that tidbit of information.
Shane about Francoise Dorleac dying, on her way to the cannes Film Festival to collect her award.
Just searched for this - didn't know about Francoise Dorleac.
Watched the Ipcress file yesterday. Fantastic film, now have to catch this one too, especially cause its by mad Ken Russell. Absolutely great edit mate, looks like a marvelous flick.
For me, Funeral in Berlin (1966) is the best of all.
Unbelievable how many famous scenes in recent movies are inspired from this one!!!
Brilliant film. As are The Ipcress File and Funeral In Berlin... Very underrated...

Thanks again for your support Mr.Zin - Keep chopping!
RIP Karl Malden, Leo Newbigen. Died today
Francoise D'Orleac is Catherine DeNeuve's sister-She unfortunately passed away during the filming of this movie-
So Tragic

Es un monumental compositor que no tiene límites, soundtracks, tango, jazz,...
fanatstic tribute to a superb film...great editing chops mr.soundtrack as always
Wow. That's an amazingly good edit. Superb.
No problem ...just an alternative to looking at the album sleeve/still for the length of the track.
Glad you enjoyed that edit.
Thanks again.
This film makes the best use of Shostakovich's "Leningradskaya Bitva" as a movie soundtrack

@caliandris i love this too. It's amazing. I could listen to it over and over.

Thanks a billion!
AMAZING THEME !!! THANKS A LOT.
@Kingmanthecomposer: FWIW after three years, that's Ondes Martenot's "grande dame" Jeanne Loriod herself on the recording, not Cynthia Millar.
Great information - thanks for your comment/s!
Leo: Harry hey, what do you think, huh? Isn't she something?
Palmer: Yeah, she's great. How's the wife and kids, Leo?
Glad you enjoyed it!
Thanks for the info.
I'm glad you enjoyed this.

Estoy de acuerdo.

I have always liked this tune, nice piano work, however the recording has always sounded thin lots of middle and top but lacking in bass
I preferred the remix of Shostakovich's "Leningradskaya Bitva" that is used for the March of Midwinter's Army.
Glad you like it!
Thanks!
soundtrack, did you put this montage together yourself? It's excellent, especially all the helmets bouncing up and down, perfectly synched to the theme...if you did, bravo!
real talk, is there sheet music for this?
been looking but nothing

Got to agree with you there.
Thanks for your comment.
Wonderful music .
No problem ...must add Vladek Sheybal (From Russia With love, Last Valley and Puppet on A Chain) to the tags.
Thanks for your comment.
Dom Kenedy's "We Ball" samples this song, very well!
General Midwinter for President!!!
Great comment post!
@caliandris - did you know there is a real CD release of this soundtrack available for nearly a year?
Mr Caine would have made an interesting Commander Bond.
C'est maintenant l'hiver de notre mécontentement.
Great comment!
I like this film, I have it along with the first two in my collection, but I can't find the last two. "Bullet to Beijing" and "Midnight in Saint Petersburg".
Honeywell. Was Clive Palmer ever IBM Compatible ? The BUNCH asked one day.
@caliandris your comment is old, but here goes anyway - I just found it on Spotify &iTunes

Great, under-rated film-good look at the "Cold war" mentality. In retrospect, all so silly.
