Great video mate, looking forward to the rest of this series already. With regard to You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise, I'm 99% sure you are thinking of Imicus, who covered it for the Metal Hammer cd. They were from here in Luton, and I'm friends with the vocalist and one of the guitar players in the band
I have never given Rush the time of day and only scratched the surface with Motörhead with a couple of albums so far. I really only know Maiden, Ozzy and AC/DC well. I own Def Lep but it’s one I never really reach for. Great vid mate
Motorhead after 1987 are a different beast. I'm not into that era myself but up to 87 is great I love it all. Rush demands attention and patience. 2 things that people struggle with these days lol.
Interesting idea for a series, Mike. Nice to hear that Cloudy is still educating your listening habits 😂 The only band you showed I still don't get is Rush, so maybe I should heed what Andy said and grab a couple of their better known albums in case the mood ever takes me. It will be good to see what other gems you show throughout this series. 😂
He hates Rush too. I suppose they aren't for everyone. Plus it's not a quick process getting onboard with them. I'm able to make time because I ignore new stuff 😂
I always like a good series to get stuck into mate… so looking forward to it Mike! I’ve thought this before… but isn’t it mad that you’re not a fan of NWOTHM but ‘Iron Maiden’ are your favourite band! Good to see you as always mate!🤘🏻
Great list! My number two would be Black Sabbath: Heaven & Hell. Ace Of Spades would be my number one too. I don't even know what albums did released back then and I am too lazy to check. Hells Bells really still sound just as good as it did back then. That GNR comparison now that you mentioned, that could be GNR song. Looking forward to your other lists. I just wish they were longer lol. All the best!
Nice idea for a series Mike. Can't go wrong with any of your choices here. Coincidently I listened to the Maiden and Def Lep albums last night back to back and there was a huge difference in them regarding styles, Maiden is definitely more heavier and faster. Both good in their own ways though. Will have a catch up with the rest of the videos when I get a chance.
I'm new to Judas Priest pretty much as well Mike. It just means my starting point might be a substandard Priest album but i can appreciate it for what it is. Getting into Rush sounds like hard work to me. I have listened to some of their flagship albums and I think I need to possibly revisit when i can find a physical copy. Cool new series you are starting, will tune in. By the way also have received my copy of " My Silent Wake " love it!.
@@AttackFromDownunda ah nice one good man. Yeah I find I have the time now to go back over old bands from a time of better production and shorter albums because I don't really bother with new stuff
Excellent video Mike! Great albums you picked from 1980. AC/DC, Ozzy Osbourne, Judas Priest, Motorhead, Iron Maiden. I'm not a Rush fan (I know, what??? That can't be??).
Exact same with Transylvania, its not just you. I'm literally sitting here, 48yrs of age thinking how does Transylvania go again? It must be a total disconnect between the time and the title. Good vid Mike!
"Shoot you in the Back" is my fave Motörhead song of all time! I know you´re not a big fan of the NWOBHM but: If you step out of the box a little bit and don´t necessary see Angel Witch as a NWOBHM band, their debut is a classic. Great songs , great atmosphere and a heartful delivery...
I used to have that Angel Witch album years ago. I liked the title track and that was it. I just don't GET that NWOBHM stuff. I think quite a few of the singers sound almost female 😂
I think there are a few albums out there under the banner of nwobhm you'd like. I've always found it a strange genre tag, you know what you're getting with Thrash or Glam metal as it defines a particular sound, but nwobhm is just a bunch of bands from Britain at a certain point in time. Always good to hear you're take on these bands though, Maiden would be the only one of these in my top 6 I think.
@@metalmogul Believe it or not a lot of NWOBHM for me sounds like women singing. I don't know the first thing about it really but everything I've ever tried that isn't in this video I wasn't keen on.
Hi Mike!! great video and cool top 6..... I still like very much AC/DC's "Back in ...." overplayed, but still great, nice surprise your appreciation for Rush and Priest, i like the "hard rock" songs they have through their career like "You don't Have..." or "Devil's Child". To me Maiden's Transylvania is a pretty cool instrumental, fair enough you're not a big NWOBHM fan, to me Angel Witch could be in the (my) list and also Sabbath's "Heaven & Hell", but you're also not a big fan of the band too.... cheer mate
1 - Rush - Permanent Waves 2 - Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz 3 - Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell 4 - Genesis - Duke 5 - Judas Priest - British Steel 6 - AC-DC - Back in Black 7 - Def Leppard - On Through the Night I'm the same way with Rush. If I'm in the mood, I love it. If not, I just can't get into them. Permanent Waves is my favorite album from them. I don't like Maiden without Bruce and Adrian. It isn't awful, but I generally pass on those first 2 and the 90s albums. I appreciate Motorhead, but I've never been able to really get into them. #7 would also be my "Glaring Omission". It's sad that Def Leppard moved away from this style. Their first 3 albums are great, but they really lost it after that.
I’m happy you’ve come around on early Priest & Rush. Easy to guess your #1 for 1980. I forget where you’re at with Heaven & Hell? easily my #1 from 1980.
Good video. Apart from the Ozzy and Motörhead ones, they're all among my favorites. The Ozzy and Motörhead ones are good too, but just never resonated with me like the others do.
Thought pyou were gona leave Iron Maiden as a glaring omission. Good shout with Motörhead, AC/DC and Maiden. You sold yer AC/DC albums..?!! Oh dear. Good ideja for s series Mike.
Cheers Dave. Yeah I was thinking of stripping back to just the essentials with my collection and I have done that yo a large extent. I thought AC/DC weren't essential to me but it turns out they are 😂
To be honest mate I don't like any metal from that era, aside from Iron Maiden. I'm not into 'heavy metal' as such, more extreme metal. Back then I was only 8 and was listening to the radio up until late 80s, so I like the chart stuff from 70's and 80s - I didnt own a radio post 89 and hate any chart music since. I do own the early Ozzy albums, but I have never liked Black Sabbath lol. So it's difficult for me to pick albums from 1980 - I was more into songs back then rather than albums. I didnt buy any physical albums until about 1985 when I was 13, and they was still pop music - two years later in 87 I was into metal and by 1990 death metal.
Yeah these are things I dug back into. Early 1980s was Adam and the Ants and Madness in my world. I was a singles buyer. The Specials Ghost Town, Nena 99 Red Balloons 😂

I’ve been doing top ten videos. I had a 7 month gap between 1985 and 1986. British Steel is my #1.
I had a look through. I seen you showing Big Black
the tune and the title
1 - Rush - Permanent Waves
2 - Ozzy Osbourne - Blizzard of Ozz
3 - Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell
4 - Genesis - Duke
5 - Judas Priest - British Steel
6 - AC-DC - Back in Black
7 - Def Leppard - On Through the Night
