  • In this video I show how to fix a broken tailgate latch clip on a 2007 Toyota Tundra. This fix should apply to all 2nd Generation Tundra's. If this video helps or just plain entertains you. Don't hesitate to Like, Subscribe, Share and Comment. As Always, Thanks for Watching!
    Materials List:
5/8" Nylon washers (available at most hardware stores)
Door Lock Rod Clip Assortment (available at auto parts stores)
The yellow clip proved to be the correct size
--Altogether I have less then $8 invested in the fix and and handful of extra clips for other projects--

The Ace HW near me did not have this part, neither did three of the local auto parts stores. Another video had a link to amazon, but they were too big for my 06 Tundra. I was able to get the part at NAPA though, part # 735-2786 . Thanks for the video.

For decades these clips were made of spring steel: they lasted forever. I hate these little plastic components. Nice video: thanks.

I love the fact that the Doorman Part Number was clearly visible in the video. So helpful! Thanks!

I had precisely the same problem with my 2002 Tundra tailgate. It would not open consistently. I was very surprised much newer models had failing fittings, as my 2002's little plastic inserts are still perfectly fine.
ALL I DID WAS SPRAY *ALL* MOVING POINTS OF THE LATCH MECHANISM WITH SILICONE.
WORKS 100% now. :) At least as good if not better than new. I mean, it takes a light pull of one finger's worth on the latch to open it now. Thank you Mike for showing the inside of the tailgate workings. You reminded me how easy it is to resolve a simple problem like this. I put up with opening this barely-working-at-the-time tailgate far too long.

Great video and very helpful to watch before you go to the store... FYI - Autozone isn't the only place, I had to go to advanced auto for the clips and ACE hardware for the nylon washers. Just in case you have garillo hands like me, and they wont fit inside the hatch to replace the clip... Just remove the tailgate locking device (2 torx screws) on the side you are working on, take it out and replace the clip. Then just install the 2 screws that hold it (latch) in place. This little trick saved a bunch of scrapes and bruises. This also worked on my 2006.

This worked for my 2006 tundra. Dorman Part Number:75450 from Pep Boys. 3 of the assorted clips fit, so we replaced 3 of the 4 fittings, wish we could have got 4 of the 4, but at least we know what's happening if it breaks again. Thanks for the helpful video.

Thanks a lot for the part number , I got some OEM rod clips from the dealership and they don't fit. I will be trying these dormans next

I actually found these clips at O'Reilly, even if it says for Ford/GM it still works for my Tundra. Another tip if the those metal rods are not grabbing well just bend them with your hands closer until the latch begins to fully grab them. That should solve your latch problem.

I’m having a hard time using some OEM rod clips, is it possible that you can give me the ace hardware part number, or exact name on it? I really need some rod clips that will fit my 2006 Toyota Tundra Tailgate

The 2004 was the 1st generation. From what I've seen its very similar.

any idea where to get the rods?

    • @lpyt2010
      @lpyt2010  7 ปีที่แล้ว

You can make your own using standard 1/8 inch mild steel rod from any hardware store. Just use the old one as a template for the bends. If you don't have one to use for a template, Rock Auto should have them. I usually get the part number from Rock, cross-reference it on Amazon and order with Prime 2 day.
