    1. Vikings have been found that was buried with Damascus steel so we know that equipment is not an issue. 2. not only was the Vikings able to conquer all of England a few vikings served as an elite unit for the Byzantine empire where they were both guards and played vital roles in war

    As soon as I saw his video I knew you, Shad, Metatron, and Skallagrim were going to tear it apart. MatPat needs to slow down and take a break in between videos. I think the stress of putting out videos is costing his research time.

    • @ThumpertTheFascistCottontail
      @ThumpertTheFascistCottontail 8 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      The cynical side of me wonders if people like Matpat deliberately post poorly researched videos, knowing that other TH-camrs will "tear them apart".
      As the saying goes, there's no such thing as bad publicity.

    • @rexleones1540
      @rexleones1540 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Well... I mean, maybe he would get some viewers, but I hope more people will get to enjoy the lesser known history channels out there. They are the ones who are going to benefit from making reply videos. Also, I doubt he purposely wanted a ton of youtubers to do videos on him. He recently did a video on Undertale and according to him the amount of hate that video received was crushing. Luckily us historical nerds are more interested in debunking stereotypes than hating, so a good amount of comments were actually constructive.

    • @jordanmackie117
      @jordanmackie117 8 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +Jango Fett "a good amount of comments were actually constructive." It really shocks and angers me that a lot of Matpat's fans can't see that. The little sycophants think he can do no wrong and dismiss the people wanting to set the facts straight as "haters", and think he should be immune from criticism "because of the effort he puts into his videos". They're such zealous fanboys that they treat Matpat like an infallible god, and refuse to acknowledge facts from people that actually know what they are talking about.

      Game Theory made a video called: "The Science of Sonic the Hedgehog". Then Vsauce3 made a video called: "Science of Sonic the Hedgehog". With apparently did much better. Game Theory made a responce video named: "How Fast is Sonic the Hedgehog?"
      Matpat later admitted that it was wrong of him to view other TH-camrs as competitors. And apologized in a video called: "My Reaction to the Fine Bros React World Controversy".
      Since the Fine Bros fucked up in a much greater faction on a similar issue.

    Just to make it something clear SCANDINAVIA IS NOT A FROZEN WASTELAND FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, Vikings could grow their own food, and MatPat seems to also forget (for example) Norways massive coastline that remained ice free all year, were there lived ALOT of fish.

    There actualy is a "Viking matrial art" called Glima.
    find it funny its just called a viking matrial art considering vikings only where called that When they Raided, and for The most, they where tradesmen.
    they often traded with fur, and other products, and that fur was high quality due to The region it came from.
    I do think aswell that I can see Varangien traits in some of The viking warriors, though I dont know if they where around The 11th scentey.

    • @thescourge7153
      @thescourge7153 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wait...Are we talking about the Pre-SAT? I nearly got a perfect score as a 9th grader in high school(Bit of an exaggeration, but not far off the last time I checked)Really, all you need is to have/do a few important things to come close to that score.
      A: Decent will to study (Hard trait for some, simplistic for others)
      B:A good teacher/tutor can go a long way to this goal
      C:A rhythmic study system set in place long before the day of the test. Now, I know C sounds daunting, but two to five hours a week, split between several days is easy to manage.
      Matpat is far from special with that score. One of my personal friends (Who I envy) is a physical genius, and is my best friend to this date, due to the capability of being able to talk about anything with him.
      Yet, I believe he would not be able to get a perfect score on the PSAT.
      Not because of intellect (He has that) but because his ambitions are elsewhere. Yet I can not correctly judge how much Matpat put into his
      test, for I can not say. But what I can say is that some ambitions led him there, and some ambitions have lured him to here today.
      I judge not by diplomas, doctorates, MDs, or any other forms of education. I judge by action, and Matpat's actions speak for themselves. He is a News Anchor, with a sheen of intellect rubbed in,
      and that intelligence has perhaps done him a disservice.
      Either way you take this, just know, I mean no harm through words, I only wish to speak what I think.

    • @thescourge7153
      @thescourge7153 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do not get me wrong though, I would not have Matpat be Caesar, and these videos being Brutus, with fans being the conspirators that stabbed Caesar 23 times, for that is too barbaric for what Matpat had done. He had not brought a empire to power(and to it's fall, but that is for another time) with an iron fist. All Matpat did was make videos that were factually incorrect.
      Just remember, Matpat should also never have to say "Et tu, Brute" metaphorically to any channel.(Even if it would be fun to watch)

    • @Nethan2000
      @Nethan2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      8:37 That's now what he's saying though. He says that the vikings were lightly equipped opportunists, who preyed on weak targets, like farms or monasteries, for example, but didn't stand a chance against a regular army. I feel it could be accurate. I mean, let's assume you're a wealthy Norseman, who owns several villages and is generally well off. Why would you go across the sea, rob poor farmers and risk getting killed by angry Anglo-Saxons? What could you hope to steal that would validate the danger? If you're poor, then yeah, you could pillage a few villages and then have enough money to buy a house, abandon raiding and be a family man.

    • @Nethan2000
      @Nethan2000 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also, a "viking culture" means as much as "cowboy culture" in America. "Viking" is an occupation, a sea raider, a bandit. People who did the raiding called themselves Scandinavians. This thing about women and children fighting come from a few Scandinavian settlements in Britain, where they found graves of women and children with swords inside. They had swords, so they were warriors, right? If I buy a gun, I'm practically a commando then.

    • @emiljohansson2698
      @emiljohansson2698 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The people who did the raiding were Vikings on Viking. And it they controlled a large chunk of briatin for a long time i think they could fend of normal armies.

    3:15 Depends on which "era" you're talking about. In the early stages of the Roman Republic that is true, the soldiers had to afford their equipment, hence the separation into Hastati, Principes, etc. The Post-Marian Legionnaires' equipment however was supplied by the state and, as you say correctly, was used again after the soldier's retirement or death.

    I am glad that you covered the Vikings with some honest information. While I do not have a dog in this fight, from all of the research and reading I have done over the years, Vikings were hellaciously formidable in battle. Example: At the battle of Stamford Bridge in 1066, though without armor (they left it behind so that they could travel much faster and farther), a SINGLE Norseman did this:
    "By the time the bulk of the English army had arrived, the Vikings on the west side were either slain or fleeing across the bridge. The English advance was then delayed by the need to pass through the choke-point presented by the bridge itself. The Anglo-Saxon Chronicle has it that a giant Norse axeman (possibly armed with a Dane Axe) blocked the narrow crossing and single-handedly held up the entire English army. The story is that this axeman cut down up to 40 Englishmen and was defeated only when an English soldier floated under the bridge in a half-barrel and thrust his spear through the planks in the bridge, mortally wounding the axeman."
    Not able to fight, huh? Of course, they lost, but this was in part due to the fact that they decided to leave their armor at home so as to reach England faster, and to hook up far inland with Tostig, the new English King Harold's brother, who was contesting the throne. Had they been armored as usual, the outcome would quite possibly have been very different given their skills and savage fighting techniques.
    Yes, they had plenty of armor, but it does one no good if one does not wear it.

    I think I've figured Mat's video(especially after seeing the start of the Undertale 3 parter he put out).It shows very clearly he was concentrating on the undertale one and that it is a passion project for him,the fact that it has 3 parts of about 20min each shows that as well.Considering that,the fact that he himself said he would put out a For Honor video to "hold people out" and that it was a sponsored video just goes to show that he got Ubisoft's check,handed the research and script to some intern he has and just read it to the camera while he was more preoccupied with fictional skeletons.And the way that backfired on him is just so god damm beautiful ^^.Don't know if he will learn anything but after you,Skallgrim,Shad,Metatron,the bad History Subreddit and many others ripped him a new one in such a way maybe(and hopefully) he will think twice next time.

      +AvisAvem well, "vikings" is also highly innacurate in its portrayel. and does actually include several debunked myths of vikings.. such as berskers going into battle literally "bare" (which is nothing but a mistranslation of the word).

    First off, great video, thank you for fighting all the misconceptions floating around. I wanted to add a thing or two about the Scandinavian tribes and kingdoms of that era that most call Vikings. People seem to think they only raided, monastery and villages, while they were also traders, explorers and conquerors, Ireland, Scotland, the Danelaw, the swedes(Svear and geats at this time) in the east, sacking of Hamburg and Paris, Friese, I could go on, that’s hardly raiding, it's conquest.
    And the whole idea about being bad fighters and having bad equipment, where to even begin. Their succes in this era shows they knew what they were doing, both when it came to equipment, fighting and tactics. Not to mention all the in fighting between smaller kingdoms in Scandinavia both before and during the Viking era, you'd think they would learn atleast a thing or two from that.
    As you mentioned there are evidence of mail and helmets, and vide array of weaponry, they knew their way around the forge, there is no denying it. I just don’t understand where all this comes from, it's not just the video in question, it's almost everywhere.
    As for the 11th century, Scandinavia was well on its way to becoming christian, and the kingdoms we know today had been established or well on its way to becoming so. Battle tactics wouldn't be much different than in other parts of europe, and I doubt the housecarls of Scandinavia and Anglo-Saxon England would be any less equipped than the Knights of Normandie or Frankia. Question is do you take into consideration 1066 and the shock cavalry of the Normans?
    Many consider the Viking era to have ended when Harald Hardrada of Norway and his host was defeated at Stamford Bridge. That doesn't mean however that the Scandinavians suddenly dissappeared from excistance, they would continue to wage war and expand, though not in the same way. There so much that could be rambled about, but I'll stop now ;P

    you talked about maintaining there blades and armor and really got me interested so i checked they would of had lots more options then i would have thought: Olive oil, turnip oil, canola oil, linseed oil, rapeseed oil - were all known. Also animal fats were used. Often the scabbard had fur inside, which would contain natural fats and keep the blade from rusting. now that his cool

  • @paperkay
    @paperkay 7 ปีที่แล้ว

    I agree with your arguments, although it' a little bit true that Vikings rarely picked opponents who would be well versed. their strategy was usually to attack a non-armed station - like a cloister - and murder everything that threw a shadow. After one, two, three such blitz assaults, everyone else just paid them tribute - loading most of what they had outside the city gates on a cart - in hopes of being left alone. Not so much because they would be superior as combatants, but because they were mass murdering lunatics and people saw them as a plague. It was a scare tactic, not so much field tactic.

    The idea of rust does make me wonder though if perhaps Bronze armor was used on ships. I know iron armor is perfectly viable but oil is expensive and it's time consuming to apply. Also it's heavier weight would be a little troublesome on the moving deck of a ship.

    Hey SnapJelly, realy like the video (although the topic itself seems to be somewhat moot :-D)
    There are just two things I'd like to add. You mention the 'viking' might wear a spectacle helmet and I realy doubt that. These helmets were pretty outdated in the 11th century. They were crafted from several pieces of metal and riveted together. By the time we're talking about they used nasal helmets made from one solid piece... and most likely mail collars fixed to the nasal part.
    You also seem to be quite shure about the.... skandinavian warrior would use a center-grip round shield. He might, but he does not have to. The kite shield had begun to replace the round shield. There must have been a reason for that. I never had much oppotunity to use the kite shield so I dont know for shure, but I believe in a battle line it does a much better job. In a single combat however the round shield may be the better choice, becaue... what you said (i believe you did that in the 2nd vid).
    So, if he knew what he is up to, he might actualy choose the shield accordingly. Same goes for the knight and the samurai of course. I believe the knowledge that you will be facing one (or two) opponents and not go into a full-scale battle might change the outfit drastically. Especialy the samurai might alter his choices a lot, knowing he does not get a horse.
    Another important point could be the origin of the knight. If he is english, we might have quite a bit of trouble to distinguish him from the "viking". European knights and scandinavian warriors would sometimes not be that different, if the came from the same time, would they?

    3:00 min: In the roman army, there where troops, which were armed from the roman state and hasn't armed themself with there own wealth. Since 123-122 B.C. they are armed from there military leader and not longer by themselfes. Vikings on the other hand had to armed themself and so is the question: why should an common nordic man, which has an life out of raids and battles (there was in peacetimes farmer, woodcutter and craftsman, like other man in other cultures in this time too) invest the same amount of metal - which was not cheap - for an sword, if he can buy an axe or a spear and use the rest of the metal he can buy for an any old tool, which he will use more often in peace ?
    I think that swords were an objekt of prestige in the viking culture and that the normal warriors wouldn't be in metall armour and swords. ...but it is an question from which time we speak, if we speak of "the Vikings", of course. Metal will be much cheaper, if the possibilities to earn and process it will be better. I thougt at the time from 800 - 900 A.C.

    One point bothers me, the sentence you said: A sword to the helmet with mail and padding underneath it doesn't do anything.
    Have you ever been hit with a sword to the helmet? It might be right that a strike to the head of person with a helmet is not an effective way because helmets mostly are designed to deflect a sword, but still, this one time i got a direct hit to the helmet with a padding underneath like 2cm thick, it damn hurt. Not like cutting hurt or smashing hut, but i was confused, also because of my limited sight in my Great Helm it did not know what happened. This few seconds of "daze" more like a confusion, is enough for a finishing strike beneath the Helmet, or in the Armpits, below the belly where ever your armour is weak.
    So be sure, a hit to the helmet can cost your life, its definitly not "nothing"
