I did not read the previous comments, but I do know that whenever Metallica/Lars records drums, they do several takes of each song. Then they splice them together to get the best sounding drum track.
And Justice For All was recorded differently as well. Not only did they do several takes, but rumor has it Lars played each section by itself several times and then they put it all together at the end.
The time changes and tempo changes are recorded with a metronome or click track, so that is how they could put together each part of the drums.
    Sorry if this is confusing.

This is by far their most complex album. In that one part, James is playing the upbeat instead of the downbeat for those two measures. He does this in Leper Mesiah, and Dimebag does it a lot too.

That "weird" rhythm shift that you guys talk about at the end of the video, is indeed drums doing that. I always digged it for years but for years didn't know technically what was going on there, and it's a very clever trick to shift the beat there. Lars is basically shifting the beat, the upbeat becomes downbeat, notice that right after the solo when he does that tom/floor tom fill, he does one extra hit on it, and that extra hit jumps into the next bar, so starting from that bar and for another one, there seems to be some kind of "problem" but it's completely deliberate. At the end of second bar of that "weird" feel, Lars cuts the snare fill about the same amount that he lengthened the mentioned tom/floor tom fill, and the guitar riff therefore locks in place again, although the guitar plays exactly the same riff all the time, through that "weird" moment and forward :) It's great, it's making the riff sounding different, feeling different, because it's accented different, I think it's awesome. Metallica did that kind of stuff, Fight Fire With Fire is another great example of making listener "confused" by doing verse vocals accenting the downbeat, not the upbeat, so you think the snare hits are upbeat, they are not in construction though. It's awesome. Also, for decades I wasn't aware that the Blackened intro is guitars played backwards, I first heard AJFA album in like 1992 or sth like that, and I got to know about the backwards thing in like 2010 ;) Cheers!

Around this time and being a full on Metallica fan, myself, along with my friends (and probably every fan), didn't know how the band would recover or even go down that road after Cliff's death. It was the most traumatic since Randy Rhoad's death that most of us knew of for the bands we loved. And Justice for All is proof they came back with a vengeance and did not die when Cliff did. This one hit hard.

There's a drummer on YT who slows it down and shows it.
Lars does a fill which brings him back 1/16th late (or early?) (for 4 bars?)
Then he does another fill and it brings him back on time.
They don't play this section (nor the end of the solo) anymore. Not sure why.

Having seen their Behind the Music a few times. You can tell 10 years after Cliff's death - they were still shaken and not over it. they even admitted that they treated Jason bad. But they did not want to replace Cliff. So if this was the next album after - then they clearly had some things to work out. I don't know this like i know their other songs! The drums , at the beginning!!!! Like the transition at 9:04.The passion when you talk about this song shows! Didn't have much of an intro (like they usually do), but the solos are so good. They have just a magic from conception to execution of a song! 17:03-17:30 (My favorite part) Good ending to the marathon!

The concert for the Damaged Justice tour was insane. To date, it’s still the best concert I’ve ever been to. I’ve seen Metallica at least 15 times over the years and while they’ve been great every time, nothing has ever topped the Justice tour. I know it’s messed up, but it had to be the combo of anger over Cliffs death fueled by booze. As far as I know, they’ve never played drunk, at least according to James. He has said he never wanted to cheat the fans by being so drunk that they put on a shitty show. However, on that tour, they were drinking excessively after each show and they were obviously still angry and grieving. It shows over the entire AJFA album.

Its hard to explain but your conversation about the change around 20 minutes in is the guiter. The riff starts on the 7th fret of the A string followed my an open E muted for the first two measures....on the 3rd and 4th measures they start with the open E muted then the 7th fret

The bass in the remaster is way better. Honestly, hearing the bass is nice, but it doesn't really change the feeling of the songs that much.

I don't fall for the whole, "they didn't like Jason" thing. Bass isn't heavy on RTL or MoP. It's featured, but it's not like bass was heavy on those albums. A lot of the time, the bass was so thin, and distorted that it sounded like a guitar.

Curious, in that end section, doesn't the chord progression change as well as the beat? Not a guitar player, but did play strings for roughly 15 years thru school, it always sounded like those chords flipped the pattern

Lars drum parts go out of phase with the guitar riff and resolve when the lyrics resume. Nobody plays any slower and no, it's no accident, it's composed that way. After all, Metallica is the most progressive of the Big Four.

This album was my soundtrack junior year, saw them twice on this tour, in Oakland, the guys let Jason try to play Anastasia Pulling Teeth, James, Kurt and Lars all left the damn stage, poor Jason barely had a full minute in before he was boo'd off, fans weren't done mourning Cliff either, there was no chance in hell Jason had the right to even attempt it, and the other 3 knew it, they set him up and the fans relished in punishing Jason to no end, poor dude😅

Lars and Hetfield have gone on the record saying that they were hazing Newstead. Lars went so far as to tell the engineer to lower the volume on the bass across the songs. People have tried remixing some of the songs to fix the bass. th-cam.com/video/vumrar1k928/w-d-xo.html
