Thank you for 1 hour and 32 mins of real sailing indulgence! Sitting on my couch on a Cornish Boxing Day watching the start! Perfect way to spend the afternoon!
Enjoyable enough, but one would think there were only a dozen yachts racing from this footage and commentary.... So SO much more to this race than just the four maxi-yachts.
Brilliant Stuff ....... and what a spectacle, l look forward to this race every year and it just keeps getting better. l hope the world gets to witness this always amazing race start showcasing one of the most beautiful harbours anywhere !
thank you for putting this on you tube . if u start to charge . please make it a 1 time payment , not signing up for a service that u have to try to cancel .
Cheering on Scallywag from my sofa here in Hong Kong :-) I have to say that I did NOT see Comanche luff up to avoid Scallywag so will await the result of that encounter with interest.
Потрясающе! Вы всем семейством были? Точно, вырастет ярый яхтсмен, коли с первых шагов с парусом познакомится! Это такое затягивающе захватывющее зрелище и действо, что берет сразу за жабры и надолго!
I watched the start of this race in 1979 from my office on North Head; I was the US exchange to the School of Artillery. The day was beautiful and the wind direction provided a spinnaker start: from our position it looked like a spring garden being watered in the sunshine. This, to me, is yacht racing NOT what's happened to America's Cup series. AC racing today is an all out rush for speed and I think the event has lost it's mojo.
Looks like Commanche does not have the light wind speed compared to Law Connect. Scallywag seems to have speed but don't know if she can match the other two when the winds come up
Why don't you leave the names of all the boats continuously streaming??? Every time you 'take a break' this resets to the beginning and we don't get past the names starting with 'S' or 'T'. Dump the add breaks and concentrate on the sailing!
Did andoo change their line? Isn't there a small degree/margin that doesn't count as "change of line" and need to consider distance/speed from port tack boat. It was tight but not a clear penalty in my book
A bunch of suburban and billionaire adventurers, get into their various pet boats ranging from the diminutive to the substantial, and take on a violent ocean than has killed many, in pursuit of romantic ideal. This is cool stuff. Go the local crews, many of which will be in the race!
A LOT, and it costs a lot more to run and crew them. For a Super Maxi you're looking at anything up to $10m+. A decent TP52, which are seriously fast and still big, will cost about half a million. Then you have to pay for a decent skipper, navigator etc, berthing, maintenance, damage repair etc.
And back the other way, anything after 39:55 was tacking in Comanche's water. Should have done your two turns before Bondi Scallywag - you're done for all money. Dishonours even. Perhaps you both withdraw your protests...
44:10 seriously, who TF holds the leeward wheel?! First thing I learnt as an 8 year old when Dad sold his launch and bought a yacht was ... do NOT grab the tiller while we're sailing - it is for steering, not holding on. (Second thing was don't stand on ropes; third was don't step outside the cockpit without a lifejacket).
44:30 Get your head outside the cockpit, away from your instruments and sail the boat. No one wins by looking at his instruments all the time when the wind gets light.
That protest after start…furling problems…commentary with Olympic sailor aboard a Maxi…getting past the heads…SAILBOAT RACING, now watch the tracker (has “sailboat name” option).
Just advertising for the dozen insanely expensive, professional, lead boats. The bulk of the fleet gets ignored. Even though that's where the real stories are. Every year its the same typical Channel 7 BS
Yet again 7’s coverage of this truely world class event has been monofocul . Concentrated on the maxi’s and almost totally ignoring the true nuts and bolts of this race. The smaller competitors, the true handicap racers are mostly totally ignored, All in the interest of money, otherwise just to keep your clueless sponsors happy……Your contribution to this sport is laughable amongst the Australian and international sailing community. Thanks for nothing! Again!
Problem is the casual watcher won't care about a TP52, let alone the small boats, when the big girls are dueling at the front. The telecast isn't for you, me or anyone who loves sailing it's for the curious hungover mass eating xmas leftovers and watching boats. Not the worst thing, some kids (like myself) fell in love with sailing due to it.
So less than 10 minutes in and its dumped because a an Olympian who goes on commentary doesn't have the correct gear begs a crew member for a coat, piss poor effort gets you a piss poor performance,a different perspective is needed, take up knitting sails luvvy

Talk about listening to yourself talking. 1992 was won by 7 seconds so 31 years later "every second counts" ..... !!! Tossers.
Enjoyable enough, but one would think there were only a dozen yachts racing from this footage and commentary.... So SO much more to this race than just the four maxi-yachts.
Thoroughly enjoyable and informative coverage!

anywhere !
So happy that I quit yacht racing a few years ago. But it is still nice to watch from the outside. Very nice broadcast, thank you!
Pretty poor coverage to be fair. Isn’t a 3 horse race. What happened to the rest of the fleet? Need to do better.
Looks so nice on the other end of the planet, Miss racing and sailing.
Great coverage but where was Black Jack, Wild Oats XI, Stefan, Gunrunner, Navy 1 etc? Feels like a thin field.
Loving the action from Seattle

That was a clean lee bow.
Really enjoyed that start what beautiful sail boats
Jimmy's comments are so incite-full, great yachtsman.
Thanks!

Since when did Scallywag fly a HKG flag? I grew up an Aussie gweilo kid sailing out of HHYC near Sai Kung.
Beautiful sunshine!
Yyou do know that at 0:40 and throughout your 'start list' reads 2022 ... ⛵
Потрясающе! Вы всем семейством были? Точно, вырастет ярый яхтсмен, коли с первых шагов с парусом познакомится! Это такое затягивающе захватывющее зрелище и действо, что берет сразу за жабры и надолго!
Proper yacht racing.l..l❤
Scrub to about 15-17 min (13-12 min to start) Sound of wind & waves which we miss up North hemisphere-winter in NYC!
Great stuff

The Rolex sign took up half the screen. Numerous attempts to remove it were unsuccessful. So disappointing!

Those motor-sailers are very impressive.
Easterlies, light winds then thunderstorms, current and low tide later, Lisa’s report on 100ft. Camanche. Entertaining, route map explained.

Yaaaah got it

Go the local crews, many of which will be in the race!
How does the handicap work with the boats which have hydraulic powered winches like Comanche? Wondering if they get penalised..
sounds stops at 15:01 apart from sea noises
Super top Race, bye bye Italy 🇮🇹
Nice

najzanimivejsi jadralni dogodek za novo leto, najhitrejše, največje jadrnice
I'm curious why Skorpios isn't racing, anyone have some insight?
How much is it to buy one of those big boats?
A LOT, and it costs a lot more to run and crew them. For a Super Maxi you're looking at anything up to $10m+. A decent TP52, which are seriously fast and still big, will cost about half a million. Then you have to pay for a decent skipper, navigator etc, berthing, maintenance, damage repair etc.
Law connect man. Furler line fail? Ugh.
How many new zealand boats are there in this year?
Caro, just the one but being a TP52 might get it on handicap.
How was the gun 1 min early
I wonder how a big foiler like an America's cup yacht would handle it , if it wasn't too rough . They would rocket down the coast.
I guess the issues would be the sea state and accommodation? Might be a bit hard to foil through the strait on an angry day.
Why the huge gaps in commentary - have you not heard of the internet?
1:13:40 - job for you Dave?
1:14:35
The winning boat. Is the captain the only one that is given a Rolex? Or does the entire crew receive a Rolex?
Only Skipper Gets Rolex
36:30 - that was not close. That was plenty of room. That was not a seamanlike rounding of the mark.
And back the other way, anything after 39:55 was tacking in Comanche's water.
Should have done your two turns before Bondi Scallywag - you're done for all money.

Whats with all the black sails these days?
carbon fibre reinforced.

Does Mark Barrett's get paid by the word ?
Well, there you go. A granny gybe always pays off.

It was appalling 😢

Do we really need to see these people jumping into the sea? Let's watch the yacht race please.

commentary is hopeless
