As someone who works in education, this is an EXCELLENT tutorial. Wonderful job and even though I've played around in SL for many years, mostly buying scripts and hacking them a bit, you just taught me a ton. I can't wait to dig into the rest of your videos and learn more. Thank you for creating these.
excellent! the tutorial was very helpful in establishing the basics that i've been muddling through trying to patch together scripts for years. you are an excellent communicatot and teacher! i hope you are still active making these bc i will be watching them all and wanting more. thank you!
thank you - this is a great tutorial. I loved your explanations and am excited to learn from many more of your tutorials- Thank you so much for all this work.
J M happy to be of help. I found too many people though scripting g was a big hard thing when I believe it's just a lot of little things that anyone can learn.. I'm always happy to hear from people who find it works. Also here is a link to our discord server. It was set up a while after this video so there wasn't a link in the description like more recent ones discord.gg/qCgmnCu
I'm just starting SL and have absolutely no experience in coding and this video has been a godsend, so glad I found it! Subscribed to your channel. I followed along and then typed the script a few times, trying not to use any reference, so I can commit it to memory. You've explained this so well, I felt like I actually understand what I was typing and what the functions were supposed to be doing, it's great! I look forward to learning more with the help of your videos :D
Becca, your tutorials are wonderful! I've watched several of them and am now starting back at the beginning and working my way through them in-world. Thank you soooooo much for this amazing contribution you are making!
Thank you so much for this! I have muscled through scripting for years, and this is the clearest yet that this has been explained. Thank you for speaking clearly and taking this step by step. Awesome so far!
YOU ARE AMAZING! I have been wanting to learn about LSL for ages and you teach it beautifully. Thank you so much for taking time out of your life to help us, little peeps! I am just starting to try and learn this after being in SL for 13 years. I have everything else down pat lol This has always been very intimidating to me. I'm sure I will need to watch your videos over and over but I am so siked you've put this together for everyone. THANK YOU REBECCA!
Awesome tutorial, Rebecca. I've reviewed a few different ones in my effort to learn LSL and I have to say that you really do a nice job of teaching it! Your lessons are much appreciated :D
On the plus side I really liked the instructor here, I can tell you care...I picked up a smidgen... But I see this in RL as well as SL... People who know how to dance in RL cannot conceive of the student not having a natural sense of rhythm and movement. There are Basics to LSL that go back even prior to New Script and default... I need to find a list of definitions of the terms that are used by Scripters. Five minutes in and assumptions are that those watching have a clue about what a STATE is, what a VARIABLE is and does and how it functions... etc. I will seek out the dummies for dummies glossary...
thats interesting feedback I remember when I made this thinking I could gloss over the parts that wouldn't be as used at least early on.. Like State - you have to have one, but they arent really important beyond that till you get a lot more in depth so i didnt wanna overwhelm, it never occured to me it would seem like I was assuming knowledge... I will keep that in mind if i find myself in a place to return to these or to start a new set with a different language thank you
Thanks so much for putting all these videos together! I'm a software engineer in RL and an avid SL player so I'm trying to merge the two. I'd love to meet with you inworld if you have time! I saw you had a discord server as well and would love to join. Inworld I'm mccnchild Resident. Thanks!
I followed this script exactly along with you but I noticed that when I type on it works. When I type off it also works. However when its "on" if anyone in local types it auto turns off? So I'll type on. but literally anything even gibberish will turn it back off.
I sorta know that stuff changed and you moved on and have Discord now. BUT, please remember, these videos are such an in valuable source of Info and done so well. Moved on and hey, wonderful. Remember, so many come here and use these to remind, to start, to get the voice of sanity for a real SL person. Thank You . P.S. I am back again because I git stuck with some (to me) complex bit of code where it turns out I missed a real basic rule. No, it was not semicolon Spoiler, "=" V "==" ARGH
I subscribed after this video, Im fairly new to SL but love coding and video game development. I have been seeking knowledge about sls and how to become a content creator and have found what I was looking for herein even more so than anywhere else, believe you me, I have saught long and far this information delivered how you deliver it, and yet nothing compares. Please tell me your willing to teach in game xD. find me in game working on Bento and newer meshes. HaxXorHazardous
Ammer The Hammer -Adam Rivers I started teaching these classes in world, but there were issues folk missing a week and falling behind.. I started these so people could learn at their preferred pace. I am willing to help with projects in world if we figure a time to meet and I have land space to work and meet on. I also have a discord server for this kind of thing too but I made this video long before I started it. The link is discord.gg/kC8d3b
Rebecca Davis If it is ok I'd love to add you in SL and talk further about coding. I truly want to learn all there is to know I love head on and purchased mesh development kits from Tonic and have been learning avastar and self taught blender and unity a little bit of work in unreal engine I've made projects for multiple game companies and seek to truly benefit SL if I can. At very least be a very influential content creator. I'll purchase land so we can do testing when things pick up a little. I'm by no means a professional but would go to the ends of the Earth to become one.
Sorry it too long to respond here. I have a rented homestead sim, and though i want to turn it back into an RP sim, ive failed to get that running a few times.. and I dont mind meeting with people in world.
the problem I am seeing with every person that does lessons on scripting is they do not explain what every little mark on a keyboard means or does.... I.E. what an asterisk ( * ) does or a slash ( / ) does or the meaning of what a comma ( , ) does beforehand... they just shoot straight into a lesson of writing scripting
Though i do understand why someone would ask for that.. I also have reasons i jump straight to the lesson..That is that my goal is to guide someone though to get a useable result and a sense of OK I can do this.. and that’s what a lot of this means.. and how it has to be laid out.. And it works. From there I’m hoping that sense of having done it once will keep people there for more lessons that add details and knowledge.. Most folk I’ve encountered who think they can’t learn to code think its just all too complicated.. or too big a thing to learn.. When I think its a series of small things.. and the more of them you learn the easier it is to learn more.. So my goal was to give them some pieces and build knowledge that way.. I’m sorry if it didn’t quite land for you

Very informative! thank you :)
sorry in my viewer there is no command box to enter on or off message on windows platform, where should i find it?
I followed this script exactly along with you but I noticed that when I type on it works. When I type off it also works. However when its "on" if anyone in local types it auto turns off? So I'll type on. but literally anything even gibberish will turn it back off.
I have an issue where a multi prim object only makes one prim dissapear no matter what i do, any tips?
hey Rebecca Davis i'd like to ask that what engine is used or what software is used to write this scripting and execute it?
I sorta know that stuff changed and you moved on and have Discord now. BUT, please remember, these videos are such an in valuable source of Info and done so well.

his teaching is very well done but it is very difficult to tell whether he is placing a colon or a semicolon with such very small picture
Since SHE tells you it’s a semi-colon - repeats it several times during one section - I don’t see that as a valid complaint.
