  • Sir Alex Ferguson’s 1999 Manchester United Treble Winners Tactics Explained. In 1998/1999, Manchester United became the first English team to win a continental treble - and they remain the only team to have achieved this feat. How did they do it?
    ► SUBSCRIBE to STATMAN DAVE: bit.ly/StatmanDaveTH-cam
    The treble in 1998/1999 probably remains Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest achievement as Manchester United manager. The Scottish genius crafted a team that was technically sublime and worked incredibly hard. Lead by the famous class of 92 - the likes of David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville - Ferguson’s treble winners set-up in a 4-4-2 that would often look more like a 4-4-1-1 and revert to a compact 4-4-2 out of possession. United were aggressive in all areas of the pitch, constantly looking to win possession.
    In attack, United’s shape would transition to either a 3-4-3 or a 3-3-4 depending on the flank they were attacking down. Their main method of chance creation came from wing-play and David Beckham - deployed by Ferguson as a wide-playmaker - was key to this. Manchester United’s depth of forwards and therefore ability to either play to feet or aerially was also really important.
    In terms of personnel, Peter Schmeichel’s aggressive distribution out to Man Utd’s full-backs - usually Dennis Irwin and Gary Neville - was a defining tactical feature of Manchester United’s treble winners. The full backs were not only key in starting attacks but also their positioning affected the attacking shape and thus were important in retaining balance. In terms of central defence, United’s go-to pairing was Jaap Stam and Ronny Johnson. The two formed a classic stopper cover partnership, with Stam as the stopper and Johnson on the cover. Stam was the perfect stopper, he was tactically intelligent which meant he wouldn’t go careering after the ball but instead would identify the danger and move to deal with it whilst Johnson would support and look to either clean up after Stam or intercept.
    Another defining feature of Man Utd’s 1998/1999 team was the way Ferguson used his wide talent. On the right, David Beckham was deployed as a wide-playmaker - often looking to drift inwards and deliver one of those trademark whipped crosses , whilst Gary Neville keeps himself available on the overlap. On the opposite flank, Ryan Giggs was much more of a traditional winger who’d look to beat his man with pace and trickery. Centrally, Roy Keane was arguably the best ball-winning midfielder in world football at the time and Paul Scholes remains England’s greatest ever central midfielder.
    Manchester United had an embarrassment of riches in terms of strikers in 1998/1999 , Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke were very much the first choice strikers - but famously Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer were reliable options off the bench.
    Arguably what was most impressive about Manchester United’s treble win so impressive was the quality of opposition that they were up against. Domestically, they had to compete with a historic Arsenal side that was lead by the great Arsene Wenger and featured world class talent like Patrick Vieira and Dennis Bergkamp - and still came out on top in both the Premier League and of course that famous FA Cup run. In the European Cup, Man Utd had to overcome Bayern Munich on two separate occasions and beat Barcelona.
    Was the 1999 side Sir Alex Ferguson’s greatest at Manchester United?

    I just watched a video on United's site of that final, and while I have seen Ole's goal - "And Solskjær has won it!" - many times, I didn't know that Solskjær also got the corner who led to the goal! He was up there all on his own, just him and a Bayern defender, kicked the ball at the defender - and got the corner. So Solskjær was doubly involved. Absolute hero. 🏆

    Very good video, thanks for posting it! In my opinion, beside the tactics, the key contributors were: 1) winning mentality 2) hard pressing by using the talent of our wingers, midfielders and r/l backs 3) beside attacking Keane and Scholes were key in supporting defence, as well as the wings in crucial times. I clearly remember all games of that run - it was a long and though road against great teams, replays and 1 slip could have been enough to lose a trophy, but there was none. That is remarkable and at the end results confirm greatness, so this is why I think this was the best ever team in England's history. (Man City now had only a domestic Treble now, w/o CL and with an easy FA cup run, which is totally different...)

    • @gm2407
      @gm2407 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Every player was committed on defence. Yorke and Cole often tracked back into full back areas and Beckham and Giggs were underrated on defence. Giggs especially had great timing and technique when tackeling. There was great depth for the time thanks to the newer signings of Stam, Blomqvist and Yorke. However for a squad with depth they were weakest in midfield which is why Beckham played central in the final when Keane and Scholes were suspended and Giggs played on the right. Johnsen had been used in the two previous seasons in central midfield and so had Phil Neville but neither was used in 99 in that way. Also Jordie Cryuff could play on the wing and as a striker but had been loaned out. Greening was the back up right winger in place of Beckham, usually unused as sometimes united went to three central midfielders and three strikers when rotation was needed.
      I think that the Premier League being so competative that year was important to Uniteds achievement as Arsenal and Chelsea forced United to stay focused until the end 4 points seperating all 3 teams after 38 games, similar to 2008 with the top three. Those two sides were hard to beat and very competative, Arsenal beat united 3-0 twice that season and Chelsea drew three out of the four games between the clubs.

    It’s his greatest side, that had no weakness, it never stayed 442, constantly shape shifting that it’s energy levels was insane. The midfield I feel is the reason they won the treble, and Fergie’s ability to constantly make those tactical changes is why they won the lot.

    I was season ticket holder at old Trafford until 2012, so saw virtually all of Fergie’s teams up close and personal. the '99 team was fantastic, but the 2007 /8 with a front line of Tevez, Ronaldo and Rooney was more skilfull, plus a bit more tactically unpredictable. The final 10 days of the 99 seasons was unbelievable. Successful teams always play more matches, but in about 10 days we had a final league we needed a result to win the title (after going 1 goal down) , an FA cup final , which fortunately Newcastle didn't play so well and we won , and then we had the Champions League final for an unprecedented treble. We had , Scholes and Keane both suspended , and played Jesper Blomquist on the left wing ( Giggs in the middle). I was there for the final , but can't remember much about the game ( combination of excitement , alcohol and some pre match troubles in the centre of Barcelona) We did play a bit lack lustre, maybe tactics or could have been overplaying and so many last gasp winners in "Fergie time" in the League. The last 2 minutes was incredible. When we scored our first, the stand ( at the top of Bernabua) is like a cliff edge, and went completely barmy with our first goal , a proper sea of fans ebbing and flowing and bouncing , cheering and hugging ,in delight and disbelief . we just managed to turn round for the 2nd corner and see the ball fly into the top corner for teh 2nd goal ,and see all the Bayern Munich team just lie flat out on the pitch. Could have sworn their goalie was crying. Incredible team tenacity and will to win got us over the line, and I can see why no English team has done (that) treble since.

    • @conor2530
      @conor2530 5 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      Yes without a doubt. The competition within the game was more evenly distributed across teams. Top teams today find it easy to walk over lower ranking teams, that wasnt as frequent in 98/99. That United team had everything in regards to talent and they had everything in regards to character. The game has gone somewhat soft for reasons I cant understand, and that's fine whatever. But this United team was the definition of never say die.

    • @UltimateFeudEnterprise
      @UltimateFeudEnterprise 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Conor Kilbride Completely agree, the mentality within football today is completely different than what it was back then, the talent, grit and determination alone would take that 98/99 team far. Against these tiki takka Sarri ball pep shit, their direct aggressive behaviour would destroy them. And although to counter that people will speak about peps Barca against United. But those players (from a different era) were absolutely world class. One of the best teams if not the best team to play the game. Peps City would be beat by the treble side. I think the team united would struggle against is klopps liverpool. I think how aggressive and lethal they are in front of goal would cause a few problems, would be a great match

      @strykah92 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the treble winners could still win all three trophies in the modern game, but not altogether in the same season. Arguably the closest a team has come to doing the treble again was United in 07-08, but even just one off-day against Portsmouth in the FA Cup was enough to deny them. Not to mention nowadays, teams are more pressured to field reserve sides in the FA Cup. City were just lucky to have relatively easy draws, and even then, that game against Swansea might’ve gone very differently with VAR.

    Great video but a bit harsh on Cole IMO. Not sure if a player that got 127 assists from open play can fairly be described as a poacher. He was a more natural finisher than any of our current players and his underrated approach play improved massively after he arrived from Newcastle. He was tipped in the press to leave United at the beginning of the 1999 season after we signed Yorke but ended up having probably his best season and forming one of the best strike partnerships of all time with the player that was supposedly brought in to replace him, as well as keeping Solskjaer and Sheringham out of the team.
    He was unfairly branded as a player that needed five chances to score by Glenn Hoddle after missing chances in important games (like West Ham in 1995 that cost us the title) and unfortunately that had a big impact on people's perception of him thereafter.

Nobody talks about team spirit anymore, but that team had belief in their abilities, they trusted one another, they had strong leaders on the pitch and they all enjoyed being in that team. SAF made them believe that if they tried to the maximum of their abilities and strength they would be unbeatable. And so it proved.

      No. He had it all. Did you even watch the video to see how they played that season?
      Switching formation in transition in different ways, inverted full back, and playing a wide diamond after united equalised against bayern in extra time to try and win the game instead of dropping into a defensive 442 to make it to extra time is tactical genius.
      During his reign he was the best around.

      @@dondamon4669 I can understand what you saying but if you want to speak about Man United like they were the best team in the world then lets bring up the facts. When United started winning leagues under Fergie there was no teams to challenge them it was like PSG in France now, later when Wenger came they were not the only team able to win the league then came Mourinho and there were other coaches able to take the league from United. Fergie would not be as dominant if he was coaching in this era.

    Man United Fans: Liverpool won't shut up about Istanbul. They're unbearable when they win trophies.
    Also Man United fans (after another terrible season): It's the 20th anniversary of the treble. Here's 200 podcasts and videos about it.
    And they say we live in the past...

      United are the only side in the premier league that can celebrate a continental treble🤷‍♂️ and also united dont brag about their 2008 double as liverpool do to their 2005 ucl

      It’s great to celebrate your history when’s it’s relevant like on anniversaries (like today or even this week for the treble and Istanbul) it’s when fans constantly refer to history all season to deflect that it’s frustrating. Liverpool haven’t won anything for years but your go to argument is you’ve won the Champions League 5 times not that you’re current team is the best it’s been for decades. Celebrate history but live in the present.

    Ofcourse Man United 08/09 Won the Triple., surely were at their best, they struggled but Still Won and achieved Titles. Alex Ferguson was never Oil Money Club to Win Titles
    Mercenary Clubs E.g. Man City use to be English league one or two Club, until Sheikh Mansour Bought the Man City for £1.5 Billions !! Oil Money Club Won the Triple easily.. oh ye In UEFA Quarter Final lost to Spurs who never bought anyone for the Season but they were Brave enough to beat Oil Money Club.
    Gulf Money Must be hurting and Crying lmaaooo 😄😄😄
    Oh ye Since when Man City had a fan base, never because you haven't Title easily but guess you pissed all over it.
