I like to think Korg put Universe as Patch 0 as a deliberate flex. Imagine getting this keyboard when it first came out in 1988, plugging it in and turning it on for the first time, and that's the first sound you're greeted with.
I did and it was amazing, like when I saw Star Wars back in 1977. Never heard a preset like it and I was sold immediately! Ended up selling it in favour of the Triton and now everyone wants an M1….held on to all my instruments since then.
That's what happened to me. Went to the shop in '89, played the M1, comparing it to some Roland synth (D20, I think), going back to the M1, playing some more… and at the end of the afternoon there really was no comparison with the Roland, and I ended up paying serious money (being a student back then) for a synth that's still in this house to this day. It was not just the "00 Universe" like sounds (although they did indeed help sell the synth), but also the sax, the organ, the different drum kits… Scrolling through the presets was a continuous feel of "does this machine ever *stop* or can it really do everything?" Of course compared to modern day synths it's pretty limited, but back then it was a box full of never-heard-before magic.
If you’re a Queen fan like me this vid is great for spotting sounds from the Miracle and Innuendo albums. “Ooh/Ahh” is the patch used for “I’m going slightly mad” for instance
This is the sound of my childhood! From Enya to Enigma and all the House anthems... TV shows and countless movie soundtracks.. Seinfield!!! LOL Love this!
After watching these great videos you don't realise how much these amazing machines were used during the 80's and 90's where I grew up. Love seeing an old Top of the Pops and seeing the back of a Yamaha DX7 or M1 Korg through the dry ice! Thanks for bringing these cool sounds back to life Doc ❤
I was not watching and just listening .. when you switched to the Rhodes at 656 I actually yelled out .. THAT AINT THE M1!!!!!!! Love your vids Dr. Mixxxxx
I've owned a Korg M1 since I was a teenager (about 30 years ago). My piano teacher picked it out with me and I bought it second-hand through a classified ad. Two years ago, I replaced all the micro switches because there were fewer and fewer numbers and so on to set. I love it. Thx for the video.
Of all the synthesizers, the Korg M1 is one of my favorites. Its contribution to House Music throughout the 1990s is impressive. I've never heard the presets like this, individually. Someone said in the comments that they're sounds that remind us of our childhood, and it's true. In almost every preset as you played, I could recognize a House track. The saddest thing for me is that a friend has an M1 and wants to sell it, but at the moment I don't have the money to buy it. Anyway, thank you for doing this video, amazing job. Greetings from Brazil.
Love u, Doctor Mix! You've literally been my synth guru. I absolutely learn a lot from you and I love the passion you put on the music. Thanks for discovering me the great album Valerian
Bravo! The Korg iM1 app does a faithful job recreating the library. The Piano 16 patch was a mainstay for the Johnny Marr/Bernard Sumner Electronic LP.
4:20 People from Ibiza! Sandy Marton. Me thinks. 15:40 Quando, Quando, Quando... I found this song through a fun TV show that among other stuff had skits about a class C duo who played at service stations. BTW, I like the M1 piano sounds more than the DX7 ones. 19:41 Isn't that the "She's Homeless" song? 21:00 Vangelis, Hymne...
From your playing i can hear a lot of classic! One i recognized was peter and the wolf by prokofiev. Love to see more people loving proper synth music and Classical music which gave a lot to contemporary music
I think I am going to have to start a Go Clone Me fund raiser so we can clone you because we need you to keep on jamming like this. for all eternity. Keep on rockin' brother. We love it!
That takes me back used these sounds for years now have the Korg collection and a Nautilus so the sounds are still with me the hardware long gone , nostalgia brought to life by the doctor!
That's what I used on my Willie Clayton tour, Korg M1 and Fender Rhodes-1993, the proffesional sound available in those days, as analogs weren't for sale in my area.
*Fender Rhodes* on standby, then bring on the "twidley" bits! Great jamming to show what the *Korg M1* was and still is. Love the closing effects jam. Sounds a little like *Steve Kinsey,* and for me that's just fine. 👌
Superb video! Some fantastic workhorse sounds on the M1. So much you can do with just the one instrument, for its day. Shame some key instruments don't sound real enough- like acoustic and electric pianos and organs. I know this clip was about presets - the way you loop & layer would make me want to get one if I didn't have 2 already! But I found the editing side incredibly powerful too, even just using combinations of saw and pulse waves.
I’m excited to still have my Korg Trinity with the optional PBS card that allowed me to store the M1 sounds in the synth. Such fun and memorable sounds to play and it makes the Trinity so much more valuable.
Thanks for this great video, Claudio. Sometimes you just forget what good things you have standing behind the door. What an amazing synth😎! OK, not all presets, perhaps 🤫
I remember "Organ 1" sounded great when you dialled in the M1's overdrive setting and set it to maximum! The M1's sounds are also all over the Apple Macintosh game, Spectre. That "whoosh" sound was whenever you collected a flag.
The kits on the M1 are massively underrated. When you start digging there are some really punchy drums, and the gated versions are ❤. I'm slowly collcting the card sets for mine, and there's some great stuff hidden on those too.
@@copperstaterocketguy1640 There is a huge difference between a hardware M1 and the software one.... 16 voices versus 256, 100 programs versus unlimited, isn't much of a comparison... It took years for the M1 to turn into the workstation it was advertised as. The hardware version was never really a workstation by anyone's standard other than Korg's. I owned an M1R, and I rarely used it because it wasn't really that useful. Unless collecting dust defines useful...
I remember playing the M1 for the first time soon after it was launched (British Music Fair in London, 1988) and was blown away by an ethereal patch; almost certainly Universe I guess. Didn’t play an M1 again though for another 10 years when I finally got round to adding one. Great keyboard; I’ve got three now (only because they turn up very cheap from time to time).
The "Good & Bad" flutes like preset frm 37:50 is definitelly reference to "Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo." by Ennio Morricone theme played by flutes and ocarina ;)
Oh wow taking me back to my childhood with these sounds. I cringe at how horrible it sounds now but they were fire back then 😂. I love this spirit in which this video was done along with the nice jams.
That Piano! It can be cheesy or good! I remember Jon Lord from Deep Purple on tour in 1987 using and M1 upon his Hammond organ and during his solos It sounded really good. I have the more recent 05R/w little box from 1994, a little more options but the clarity and punch of M1, M3R.... Can't be beaten. Thanks by heart for this fantastic video!
Great video. I love these old digital synths. For anyone who dreams of getting an M1 but can't, for whatever reason, Korg Collection offers a very accurate VST with 8 stereo outputs. It's pretty awesome.
X5D/r is a magic little box! 64 voices of polyphony at the time (around 1995?) and very deep editing. You can make It sound analog too! In the 90's a guy whose name is Frank Carvalho made a free set of Hammond presets for it and the older 05R/w. But the last has only 32 polyphony voices.
Grande! Almeno 2 citazioni di "Elio e le storie tese"... ;-) Korg M1 è stato il mio primo synth... lo conservo con cura ed è ancora perfetto... Grazie per questo video!

that literally how it Synth companies think.
was used in a techno song called "the abyss" in the 90s

Whatta heck? ...A Blue Shirt! ...Love the M1-Sounds!
blue socks too
Also a fan of Korg M1… and 01w
Fantastic show Mr. Doc! Blue note is veeeery goood. 🧢
This was the first thing i thought too. Almost did not recognize him.
- Right ? 🤣 But still Claudio awesomeness. So we know that his powers are not in his shirt 😀
Adding the Rhodes makes every patch sound phenomenal! That and the talent!
Putting the Rhodes on there is almost cheating. ❤
@@xlat808 For real! 😂
So trueeeee
I bought an M1 after watching your first video about them. Absolutely love it. Such nostalgia.
My mate had one of these 1st time around, think he got it used for sure but in that decade.....awesome!
If you’re a Queen fan like me this vid is great for spotting sounds from the Miracle and Innuendo albums. “Ooh/Ahh” is the patch used for “I’m going slightly mad” for instance
I'm pretty sure that M1 was only used in Innuendo, while Roland D50 was the main synth in The Miracle.
@@feliperojascno… the M1 is all over The Miracle!! The pads on Bijou as well
This is the sound of my childhood! From Enya to Enigma and all the House anthems... TV shows and countless movie soundtracks.. Seinfield!!! LOL Love this!
Enya moztly used a d50 :) but yea
That house cut was beast!
Long live the Korg M1.
Thanks for taking me down the memory lane to my teens when my parents bought the M1 and my journey to the heaven of keyboards and synths began!

Did you by any chance go on vacation to chateau de fereyrolles in the south of France and play piano on the piano at the opposite camping there?
The Universe patch. Simply beautiful. The Choir sounds on the M1 have a very ethereal, gothic quality to them.
"...in un tripudio di miccette..." Bravo, great tribute to Elio. M1 was my first, serious, synth in the distant 90s. Unique and unforgettable.
Best workstation of the 90'. I still have mine.
Grazie Claudio, sempre un piacere vederti in action! Ho un M1, adesso l’userò di più!😊

My M1 sitting behind me is crying "fix me ! fix me!" need to sort a few of the keys out. Love the sounds this thing makes.

I was just going through the presets on my virtual M1 earlier today, what a classic! 🔥
Thank you for an absolutely amazing walk through the KORG M1 really fantastic trip back through sounds 🎉 Amazing
