Blondie ~ Rapture 1981 Super Extended Purrfection Version

  • Discover the meaning of Rapture franklycurious...
I got to doodlin' around with another Blondie song and I kinda pushed it as far as I could without making it boring. What amazes me most about Blondie's "Rapture" is the super original funky hip hop track they recorded for it. They did not sample other groups funk, but they sure figured out how to get the flavor and make it their own. The rapped lyrics telling the story of an absurd UFO encounter on Earth were written by Debbie Harry and Chris Stein. Debbie mentions that she still has the original papers and you can easily see who wrote which parts by the handwriting. As for the music track, there's a horn part that makes me think of "Which Way Is Up" by Stargard, there is a Chic-like guitar riff and then I realized that the bass line is evocative of Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby". When "Rapture" came out, I had already been addicted to the rapping antics of The Sugar Hill Gang, Lady B and Kurtis Blow. So, hearing Debbie Harry rap and sing her way through this one was a treat. The rest of the band were wary of Rap, thinking it might be detrimental to the band. I suppose that is a valid claim, but they should have heard what Stein and Harry did. The sheer beauty of the marriage of music and oddly rhyming lyrics were something that Stein and Harry were confident was a winner. So it was, peaking at #1 for two weeks back in March 28, 1981. The song itself has been sampled by many hardcore rap artists, starting with Grandmaster Flash. Blondie broke up after the relative failure of "The Hunter" and kinda bubbled under for years until 1999 when they released "Maria" and exploded all over again. It felt good to have them back and they have continued to record and release great music. Recently they released "Pollinator" and its worth giving a listen to, I'm waiting til payday to go buy the CD, but I've checked it out on iTunes at geo.itunes.app...

I used to work in a record store where Blondie came to sign records. While I was at the office by myself typing, Miss Harry open the doorby herself and asked me if she could come and spend a few minutes there. I said YES of course and there she was!! sitting just quiet and me.. working, until the pizzas and other people arrived. Can't erased the memory out of my mind. Yes!!!!

...standing in the AA luggage area at LAX 25 years ago or so, waiting with 270 +- others, I turn around and slightly bug out as Debbie Harry is standing right behind me & I notice what look like most of the rest of the band milling about as well,... i was mute, thinking of what to say if i saw a chance..
...finally when the carousel started moving and every one shuffled forward to look for their bags she moved up next to me i looked over smiled and said 'hi love your music', she thanked me and I said "you know .. Rapture is still one of my favorites, you need to try that again" she laughed and said " ah! So your the one?" and wished me well as she reached for her bag....
..one of my few, brief, brushes with rock and roll (rap?) greatness......;-)

This one reminds me of Elon Musk. He is the man from Mars. That's why I don't get it about that one. He's too young for me, no matter how well I think about him. He's definitely very lovable. Undeniably very loveable. I don't know if I want him close to me, too tempting to be a cougar. My oldest daughter and I reaffirmed the agreement the other day. More age difference between her and him, than him and I. That's because of what she witnessed here about young men after me, years ago, even when we went out together. I didn't understand it myself. I didn't even know what a MILF was when yelled at me. She had to tell me what that means.

Pink Floyd, The Wall was the big hit, but Blondie was big and I fell in love with her on the school bus...Fast Forward 15 years and I was working at a big Ad Agency and wet to a private industry party... After taking some party favors and the night rolled on, somehow through the graces of a higher power, I am dancing with Debra Harry!!! See was a guest performer and somehow I got to spend a couple hours with her and did a little grinding on the dance floor. Every little boy's dream come true... well almost :) but boy, did that 5th grader have a good PM that night!!!! O yeah, her music is awesome also :)

...still very listenable today. Not as much dancing as I used to...but, this track makes hard-driving, heel-stomping in my chair almost impossible not to do. And power-walking on the treadmill...fooget about it! :)

I still remember the diversity of people on the dancefloor loving this song as Debbie's voice traversed from sweet flowing to heady rapping lyrics. This song still brings a smile to my face. "...and he shoots you dead and eats your head." Totally nonsense lyrics that didn't seem to matter because of how they were presented.

We went to Saint Louis a few years ago and part of the reason was a free show that we saw in the park, the botanical gardens, we saw Blondie and we saw Melissa Etheridge and it was a great concert we just wish we had gotten their earlier we missed the 1st part of Blondie's set she can still rock it on down after all these years..!
