- The Porsche 911 is a brilliant sportscar, undeniably, but that performance comes at a cost. A base 911 will set you back $120,000 which is out of the realm of reality to most of the population. This means that if you want a Porsche 911, you have to have deep pockets, but it wasn't always that way. Back in the early 60's Porsche offered a car that gave you all the stunning looks of a 911, but priced it more for the everyman, and they called it, the 912.
Much thanks to the Porsche Corporate marketing team whose footage was used for all non-912 footage

I have owned my 1965 912 painted dash, 3 gauge for 46 years. Redone with 70’s plastic updates in the late 70’s. It’s now under restoration #2. Required extensive structural and minor rust repairs. Going back to original Bali blue. Yes, it is costing way more than the current sell value. $$$$$ but the emotional attachment is priceless.
That is something a lot of people won't understand. At a certain point, it stops being about the money, and starts being about preserving something that matters.
As a senior in college I was enamored by Porsche while my classmates were parting with $7000 for a new Corvette. I was a novice and jumped at a 1966 912 for $1200 but it was a wreck. Rust everywhere, no heat cause the boxes were rusted out. Eventually stripped the paint-removed ten pounds of filler from the trunk lid. Long story short- rebuilt the engine on a workbench. Drove it 3yrs in Italy in the Navy. Sold it when I needed money and wish I could enjoy that car again.
Thanks for sharing mate! It's crazy to think a new Corvette was $7,000...
Proud owner of a Karmann Ghia here, to me the next best thing after a 356 or 912. Nice video! 👍
Ghia's are awesome! Thanks for sharing and watching mate!
KGs are awesome!
I had a beautiful 1969 912 in the very early 00's, back when they weren't worth anything. Fun car, gorgeous styling, super reliable. I'd have never sold it had I known that their values would rise ten-fold over next past decade and a half.
We all have those cars that we regret selling....
I've loved my 912 for 20 years - way before they became cool again!
Well, if you still have it, you came up on it pretty well!
My 912 is a blast to drive all its quirks.. I've stripped it to baremetal. Inspected and replaced structural components.. still need longitudinal repair.. overall, it's pretty solid to drive.. 😅 once took a railroad hump too hot.. valve over shifted.. oil everywhere..
Sweet video..
Would love to see the tear down videos.. thank you for sharing.
Thanks for sharing mate, a video of the owners story is coming soon with the entire car stripped to the bone!
And today you’ll be hard pressed to find a 912 for $45k. At least not one that doesn’t need 10’s of thousands of dollars of work
This is true, in my opinion, with the ridiculous prices new Porsche's are demanding, your better is much better spent on a classic.
About 15 years ago here in Montana l was in the Market for a older Dodge challenger or 90's 300 zx and came across a red 912 that ran for either 6500 or 8500.l didn't know what made the 912 different l knew it looked like 911, l passed on it , later l started looking at them on line and seeing prices go up literally by the week. I kick myself now, and now its my favorite Porsche, l drive a Boxster now , its the only Porsche l can afford that l like
Same boat, I also have a Boxster, for honestly the same reason.
The old ‘lead weights’ in a 911 error in this. The 911 front bumper weights were cast iron.
I heard the weights were made of adamantium, but who knows
Air cool life 😎
All day errryday
Aaaand a 912 sold for $90,000 on BaT
Crazy how much they sell for now
And the same car but a 911 would be 200k. The 912 fully restored or a great survivor is a deal at $90K. People need to move past what the 912 once sold for 10 years ago. Not that many years ago you could get a Dino for not much money, same for the original cobra.
You used to be able to get an NSX for $30K, or a Ferrari 360 Modena for $60-70K, a Porsche Cayman GT4 for $70k. Cars have just gotten so much more expensive in such a short period of time.
You cannot do that now even with a Boxster or Cayman, as those can get very very expensive. Think a Boxster Spyder. Insane. There is not really an inexpensive option.
Not anymore no, and with the Boxster and Cayman going full EV, there won't even be an entry level Porsche sports car that anyone wants. I don't know what Porsche is doing lately.
With 45 grand I would buy a good real second hand Porsche!
good luck
