Habits of slash: 1) Wear leather boots, leather pants, a top hat and aviators. 2) Let guitar hang at crotch level or lower 3) Lift guitar perpendicular to the ground for solos 4) Generally be badass
So many people say Slash is overrated, but he's one of my favorite guitarists ever. Few people can make their instrument sing the way Slash does. There's a goosebumps inducing moment at least once in every Slash solo. The guy simply knows how to get the most musical sounding playing out of his guitar.
Yea I hear ya. He doesn't over play or shred a million notes for the sake of it. He simply 'serves the song'. And serves it well. He is a master of vibrato and choosing the right notes to hold.
Not disagreeing with ya at all. Slash is incredible. But If you love a singing les Paul. Listen to Gary Moore. He’s my all time favourite. Definitely check him out if you haven’t heard of him already man :)
Because he’s not a shred machine and theory buff guitar elitists like to put him down. But fact is without shredding and having a great deal of theory behind him, he evokes more emotion then all of these guitar elitists combined. Which makes him one fo the best to ever do it. He is a freak.
My first gig was a slash gig. People don't like him cause he doesn't do insanely fast shred licks but he's an amazing guitarist ! Apocalyptic Love is an amazing album
Crysis Music he plays with some great soul and feeling and although he doesn't always do it he can play quite fast as well. Absolutely great guitarist, can do quite it all
Remember guys, Slash also adds notes to a bend. So for example you bend on the 15th fret on the B string, then add the note below that too the bend (in this case the 15th fret of the e) Especially in november rain, don't cry sweet child and more
Also, in November rain, he does this thing where he hits a chord on the e and then right after playing that note he plays that same note on the b string.
u can always just listnin to his records and learn by ear ?... like he and many other probably did and develop ur own style. Could be wrong might be me.
You're absolutely right! In fact I've always been searching for my own "voice", which is way more important than learning other people's stuff. But I really love Randy Rhoads, and I'm actually studying his style, just to have some kind of musical information and ideas at my disposal, but, you know, as a self-taught guitarist, I really can't do more than the "obvious", so I would really appreciate a video about his playing. But anyways, you're right, I have to find my own style and my own "habits", so, yeah, peace! Thanks for reminding me what is the actual most important thing for a musician!
Tj Si the problem with slash why people think he shit is cuz they want him to play his most popular stuff like wtf. He’ve been playing it for so long like at this point it doesn’t even matter to him. See him playing actual jazz bluess and even doing alot more soloing in a more technical and musical sense and he def wouldn’t be shit now.
Sanchay Wadhwa I have a very unpopular opinion - I don't really enjoy listening to Jimmy Page that much except for Immigrant Song. At the moment he doesn't seem to stand out to me that much except for being sloppy vide in Whole Lotta Love
+Jakub Turlinski, might I suggest listening to some of his wonderful acoustic work? Give a listen to Rain Song, Bron yr-Aur Stomp and Going to California. Or In My Time of Dying if you're more into some electric blues.
No wah-wah way! Lol Regardless, he has carved his mark on stone as being one of the most influential guitarists of all time. I love all of his work (sounds biased but it's all good) and his style of playing inspires my own playing.
This is pure gold , I am a huge slash fan and am always looking for info on how to play in his style whatever song you play , this has got some great pointers , I know what make up the elements of his style like you said but showing us how to adapt it to whatever whenever we play is so valuable, , I will be studying this and writing notes to myself . I like the breaking down of a style to show how you can adapt it to different progressions and how it fits in with theory. Thanks so much for this post
In sweet child Slash uses a E minor harmonic scale for the first part, and a E Aeolian for the second part. Night train : A Aeolian. outa get me : G Dorian ect.. There is no Slash scale. You can't even say that Slash uses the scale shown in this video more than others. Slash uses Aeolian very often, Dorian often, Minor Harmonic sometimes, Pentatonic minor and major very often, and the blues note of course, and the major third too. The most evident thing that defines Slash guitar playing is the uses of the minor Pentatonic scale with the blues note and the major third. This makes his guitar playing sounds very chromatic and that's what defines Slash guitar playing, he sounds chromatic.
Thanks so much for all these habit videos. They aren't made to make us play EXACTLY like them, but more so what they do in the writing and solos that make the player. Love the videos Tyler, keep going strong! P.S. I've wanted a slash habits video for so long now lol.
Slash have some what Satriani-ish style going on in his phrasing and his scales mixed with blues. Love everything he does. When Slash plays, you'll know its him 🤘👌
Another habit that is less technique but more observation is that Slash makes the first note count in his solos. Sometimes precluded by a chromatic run (you got no right) or bluesy fill (jungle)
Make sure to check out Modern Rock Guitar Techniques (bit.ly/MODROCKae) for a full breakdown of some of the techniques I used in this lesson. Also, comment and let me know which guitarist I should break down the habits of next!
I've also noticed Slash to be an avid pre-bender. He'll have a note already bent, then slowly bring it back to pitch in the middle of a solo. Great stuff!
People saying he's overrated yet he was the lead guitarist and helped record the best selling debut Album of all time on a Chibson and now Gibson makes replicas of a replica
+Music is Win Thanks for posting. I really dig your videos. They reinforce a lot of things I have learned and teach me so much that I haven't. Your videos teach complex lessons but are great for everyone. In my opinion they are at just the right pace no matter where you are in your study. You also have a great set up that sounds awesome. Thanks my friend, see you next time.
Rudraksh & Nishil's there would be a fair bit of stuff to talk about, like how he bends up to a note but doesn't play the bend or the release, also in a few of his solos he always does this little lick on the e string that's a bit of a habit

Strap-locks, one of the crucial things that people don't teach beginner guitarists. I've had the displeasure of watching my first guitar arc through the air in front of my face because the strap came off the knob opposite of the neck and swung around to the front right before it bounced on hard flooring...
What? Habits of Slash? NICE! You took my suggestion, apparently! (I'm sure a lot of other people suggested it too, but I'm just sayin'...) I haven't even watched it yet, but I had to say THANKS!!! Now, on to the video!
I get all that, have done for nearly 20 years but, no way could I explain it like you!!Obviously you can play, you have a skill in breaking down habits and conveying them. I can't get my head round how you did that. I can do Slash, Hendrix, Gilmour, knofler e.t.c. I can pick their habits up but not explain them like you. good on you dude, you'll go far
You are a ridiculously good player. I’m hopefully going to start learning to play guitar after my first year of high school, and I’m going to come back to this video (and many of your other ones) for good advice.
for me slash was the reason i picked up a guitar and why i gravitated to the les paul, (other then i think it lookest the coolest, but flying vs look sick to) but that Appetite les paul the flamed maple top , the colour, the trapezoid inlays, where the pickup selector is the covered pickups) all things i think make the les paul my favourite looks wise and tone? oh my the sounds n tones slash makes are almost metal/rock and blues my 3 favourite generes in one .. and just his vibratos and solos are so complex they are hard for me to play , im a inntermidiate player only but still i can get down clapton layla, symphony of destruction, whom the bells toll, puppets but the november rain solo is hard as fck for me lol anyways i love my les paul cause of slash, and the #2 guy is clapton when i dial in that woman tone i could stay there for hours man i own 3 guitars my first one i got when i was 8 it is a Strat chinese knockoff (not even squire) that ive brought back to life new pickups, strings polish, the 2nd one was my first "real guitar " a epiphone Slash les paul special ii Afd, which is a hot sounding guitar and my newest and most expensive is a Epiphone Les Paul 50s standard gold top (that ones my baby lol)
fantastic green guitar, great observations, also one of his techniques I noticed as he goes higher up the frets he points the neck more straight up toward the sky to get his power or source of finger strength and speed closer to the body, thus pushing sideways across his body rather from underneath.
Great video my friend! im an old slash fan and i do all of the things you taught here, just didnt break it down like that, i need to work on the bending vibrato though, thanks for sharing!
People should listen to some Blues jam with Slash. Really really good i must say. That man can truly sing thru his guitar in a way that few can. His melodic solos and great bending/vibrato 👏👏
Been watching for a long ass time Tyler. Love the videos. The thing you mentioned about using your thumb when applying vibrato to bends finally made it click for me. Mine has always sounded sketchy as hell but it's already way better after 30 mins practising with the anchor thumb!
That guitar reminds me of the guitar that Chad Kroeger was playing while covering Sharp Dressed Man by ZZ Top with the Nickelback. Amazing guitar and even more amazing cover!
Habits of slash:

Crysis Music agree!
He is awesome beceause he doesn't play crazy fast shit.
He really knows what he's doing.
Crysis Music he plays with some great soul and feeling and although he doesn't always do it he can play quite fast as well. Absolutely great guitarist, can do quite it all
was literally in tears when i saw him recently with GnR. hes so fuckin good
He does go pretty fast though :D Not Petrucci tier fast but he definitely shreds

That's the blues influence that he talks about. The Aeolians
*above. It's the note ABOVE because it's HIGHER in pitch. Due to how he guitar is tuned it's a minor third relative to the bent note (1 step up).
Also, in November rain, he does this thing where he hits a chord on the e and then right after playing that note he plays that same note on the b string.

The "Slash Scale" looks like a combination of the Blues Scale and Dorian mode.
I AM Z absolutly , slash use dorian pentatanic for fast lick (outro november rain , solo sweet child ...)
Baptiste Hannecart thanks for confirming. I am a big fan of Slash's playing and am very interested in dissecting his technique :)
I AM Z me too , you'r welcome;)
Exactly what I thought.
In sweet child Slash uses a E minor harmonic scale for the first part, and a E Aeolian for the second part.
Night train : A Aeolian.
outa get me : G Dorian

There is no Slash scale. You can't even say that Slash uses the scale shown in this video more than others.
