Well, PS4, as I like to abbreviate it ;), was released on a weird time. February '95 in North-America, December '95 in Europe. To put that in context: Playstation released September '95 in both regions, Sega's own Saturn released almost SIX months before this game on Mega Drive in Europe, for North-America it released just two months later. Anyhow, because both were already out in Japan, there was an import scene from late '94, almost '95. Not too mention quite a few people sold their Mega Drives - or Genesises to get a Super Nintendo and only found out about this game this millenium. So yeah. :/

This is absolutely my favorite RPG game of all time. I actually just finished Phantasy Star IV for my 25th time a few minutes ago. I can't believe that I've played it so many times, but the replay value is absolutely fantastic. One thing I find amazing is all of the abilities that characters can do with each other. I even learned a new two person ability a couple of days ago in my latest playthrough, even though this is my 25th time. Amazing.

I was helping out my aunt clean out her attic when we discovered her stash of old Sega mega drive games, about 30 in total including all the sonic games, castlevania new generations and this game. When we found out how much the game was worth completely boxed( £100-120) she still let me keep all the games. I feel guilty as a year later I still haven't played it but that will change soon as the game looks amazing

I've mentioned it before, but this Classic Game Room intro music was by far my favorite. The funny squirell mascot under the record scratch leads into whatever this bongo and acoustic guitar riff hails from, followed by the sound of a crowd cheering as it explodes into the main theme, using synthesized organs that are more interesting than the lowkey version which i think came later in the series.

The one thing that you missed out on was the difficulty of Phantasy Star II and III copared to that of Phantasy Star IV. Phantasy Star IV is the easiest of the series with the simplest battle system. II and III however are a different story. In II, I managed to make it to the next planet and then gave up because I couldn't find a town and the overworld battles just became too hard (or maybe I was too intimidated by the giant robots). In III, I didn't even understand the battle system because it consisted mostly of pictures. I eventually figure out the big wind up button was the auto battle button that will screw you over. I thought the battle system in IV was much better upgrade however I wouldn't have minded if the difficulty was toned up a bit (just not God awful bat shit insanley hard like in III).

So I borrowed it for a day just to learn the mechanics. I finally got the hang of it especially learning how to do chain moves to create super attacks just so we could beat that first sandworm just to find out there were more. Man how I miss this game.

    • @BrainScratchComms
      @BrainScratchComms 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

They did in fact do PS2 remakes of 1 and 2 that brings the graphical presentation more in line with 4, although the graphics used are more RPG-Maker-ish? Sadly they're Japan-only, but if you have a decent computer you can run fan-translated versions via emulator. They're called "Phantasy Star Generation 1" and "2."

Galimir Nund I remember actually playing this in the late 90's on my Genesis. I definitely recommend it because it was one of the best RPG's ever for the Genesis. One thing the reviewer didn't highlight were the combo's, which I found very unique for RPG's at the time! You can cast certain spells/skills in a particular order to have 2 or 3 guys "combine attacks" to form incredibly powerful & deadly attacks! It's like characters in DBZ pulling off a double Kamehaha, or characters from Naruto pulling off a team attack.

Phantasy Star deserves a proper return. A new installment of the main story would be amazing if done right. A new generation fighting Dark Force once again on today's consoles and technology! An open world experience that could give Breath of the Wild a run for it's money. Sega is really giving the PS series the shaft letting this rot away...

Dark Force is done, there is no point for it to come back. There are other Phantasy Star games with different timelines (Zero, Nova, etc). And an open world experience you can have with Phantasy Star Online, which it has been more successful than the classic ones.

This game is absolutely one of my favorites. The gameplay is a lot of fun, but most of all, I appreciate the manga-styled cutscenes; they give room for infinitely more emotion than the little sprites alone would allow. It feels more real when you have the characters and backgrounds fully drawn out, so you're able to care a whole lot more. And the art-style is great!
That's not to say the old Final Fantasys didn't succeed in emotion... but they could've been a lot MORE with detailed cinematics.

I played the game a couple of times so I didn't have a set playtime and I wasn't trying to rush either. It isn't long, requires little grinding. I usually beat the worm from the hunter's guild early. Used to grind a little when I got fist rune. After you beat Zio before leaving is a good place to grind(very little), especially if you let the slimes fuse. After beating zio is where the game really begins.

Just found this video after playing through this game for the first time. I started it on Tuesday morning and it's Thursday evening now haha that's how good it is. Kinda shorter than I'd hoped and it could use some in game descriptions of items/skills/techs or how a weapon or armour in a shop compares to what you've got on already, but all in all it really was superb and I can't believe it passed me by as a kid.
And yes omg the music is all amazing! My fave is the vehicle battle song

I'm starting playing on previous phantasy star games before playing this one, that seems really amazing.

Great video, this is as you said one of the best turn based gaming experiences you can have. PS IV is my favorite Genesis RPG and one of my personal favorites ever. Probably one of the first ones I actually sat through a beat during my youth.

I played all the Phantasy Star games as they were released and enjoyed playing all of them. It would be interesting to remake all 4 today with the graphics that we have today. Another series I would like to have a remake of is "Lunar" .

I just got the complete game (cartridge, case, instruction manual) at my local flea market for an amazing $35! I'm pretty busy with work now, but I can't wait to start it when I'm done! :D

#1 Classic RPG I've ever played - Chrono Trigger makes a very VERY close Second. They're both awesome in their own rights.

I bought the Sega Genesis game pack pretty much because it had this and all of the other PS games it and I put an app on my Kindle Fire HD specifically to play this game. I owned it for the Genesis and loved it ever since. I had to have it.

Made it to the end back in the day. Just couldn't down the last boss for whatever reason. Definitely worth the time if you enjoy the turn based rpg style. No matter how you get it, this is one that I think everyone will enjoy!

It was actually more powerful. You can really see it in the graphics and colours... Also it competed fine in the UK, it was actually the more popular console over here.

This was the best one in the series. Best translation, best animation, graphics, sound, story, etc. PSV would be awesome. I played all of them. Playing the ROM makes it extra fun IMO.

You are mistaken who said PSIII "adds very little to the mythology and can be played whenever". PSIII was the first where we got a sense of Dark Force as a determined villain, and not someone who just popped in, like Necron, but the actual main antagonist. Also they had never explained what happened to Palma in PSII, prior.

I had this for the genesis. Probably the first rpg I owned unrelated to my brother, who had the snes and FF and Chrono Trigger. I think this game is really something special. I hadn't played the original or the sequel the gba collection. This game is better, and you can play it without knowing the other games. Though if you get the collection why not. You really do get the sense of ethos from the build up of all three games, plus I love the look.

I played Final Fantasy VI growing up as a kid, and I didn't get around to playing any of the Shining Force games or Phantasy Star games until my late twenties. I enjoyed Phantasy Star IV and Shining Force 1 and 2 more than any SNES rpg, excluding Earthbound. So, I think it's really a matter of personal preference.

I was such a spoiled kid. My grandparents got me this for the full $99.99 new price tag. And it was awesome.
