      No idea how is it even possible to get such a low clock as 5.4 with that voltage. Look: my old Phen II is running only 3.6 at base voltage which is 1.4 or 1.45, but it is 45 nm process. So how come 10 nm 8 series cannot maintain some above-average speed at this crazy voltage (taken into account 2 times lower tdp and 2 times higher critical temperature compared to my Phen)? Common sense tells that they must be able to do some 7GHz at this rate at least, but they cannnot...

    • @bobhumplick4213
      @bobhumplick4213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      8 series are 14nm (they call it 14nm++). this is as high as any desktop chip with normal cooling has been able to reach....ever. the pace of technology is not always to our liking but it is what it is. for all we know there may be some unknown wall which prevents cpu's from going any higher than about 5.5-6 ghz with normal cooling. the world of physics has its limits

    Why is delidding even necessary in the first place? All of the money Intel put into marketing and development and they ruin it with shoddy thermal paste to save a couple of cents.

    • @henryweng9048
      @henryweng9048 6 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      It's because the chip itself only costs like $5 to make, so spending an extra dollar on better paste will significantly increase production costs.

    • @Toad_Hugger
      @Toad_Hugger 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      6Twisted
      There are more reasons to using a thermal paste than just reduced cost.
      I think Gamers Nexus did a video that touched on this subject a bit. I forget the name of it, but it featured a Dur Bauer or whatever his name was.
      But yeah, it'd definitely be better to solder the IHS to the CPU directly, like AMD is doing with their Ryzen chips.
      Though I think the paste works fine for the stock operating conditions of Intel's CPUs. Most of them are in OEM manufactured computers, which wouldn't benefit all that much from a soldered IHS.

    • @bobhumplick4213
      @bobhumplick4213 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      ive heard 2 main reasons for the paste. first they get a government grant for eliminating whatever harmful materials were in the solder (cpu solder is different that regular) and that the soldering process ruins a small amount of chips. these may be true or not im just passing it along. at the end of the day they dont really have to. if ryzen starts hitting 4.5+ then they may change their minds

    • @4gbmeans4gb61
      @4gbmeans4gb61 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have successfully managed a 5.2 on air, and not delidded. Cinebench completed 7 successful passes, Aida 64 CPU, FPU and cache stressed for exactly 1 hour and 30 minutes. Used Noctua NT-H1 thermal paste and the Dark Rock Pro 4 in an H500M with 2 140mm intake fans at the top, the 2 200mm fans in the front and 1 140mm exhaust fan with an open air cooler on a 1080. Temps hit 84 max, and was stable during all tests. Just ordered my delidding tool(der8auer Delid Die-Mate 2) and Conductonaut as well as Kryonaut for my thermal paste.

  • @powermos
    @powermos 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Very impressive overclock. I think you should find someone that can push this thing on LN2 or helium, you might have a record breaker. I am kinda disappointed with the multithreaded performance though. I just got a Ryzen 1600 and a lot of people suggested that i go with 8600k and i am so glad that i didn't. First of all that cinebench score. I have overclocked mine to 3.9ghz on the stock cooler and my score is identical with that top tier liquid cooled, delided, liquid metal, power hungry 8600K at 5.4GHz.1600 is 65w stock and mine is around 105w with that overclock. That i5 is 95W stock and it would definitely need a decent cooler with any amount of overclocking. And the whole deliding fiasco is just ridiculous for a cpu of that price. And we didn't even got to the price. A 8600K costs as much as a 1600+motherboard, and you still need to buy a cooler because it doesn't come with one. All that makes it a much more expensive option, for which you can just get the 1700X.

    i can get my 8600k to 5.1ghz but thats drawing a massive instability line... i have a comfortable 4.8ghz at an offset of 0.090 and it maxes out around 77 degrees under sustained load dipping into 80 degrees on a softer fan curve.. mind you this is a 120mm aio set up and a 240mm aio would serve to drop that even more.

    why isn't intel making the cpu the same size with the pcb so that I can be cooled easier?
    like having some distance between the cores

    i have no idea about the voltages or the temperatures , i reached 5ghz stable with 1.350v and 70C max , is that ok ? thanks

    Should you also use conductonaut between the ihs and cpu cooler?

    My 7600k OC at 5,3ghz, You are wrong about gaming. If you play on 5.4ghz will benefit you just not gonna give you more fps. thats 2 different things it seems most youtubers & the people watching them are missing. Gaming is not 60 or 144fps as most youtubers mean when talking about "Gaming". In one word- LATENCY. You will kill more enemies in FPS shooters & other time sensitive games.

    I got my chip to 5.0ghz at 1.21 volts, with temps under 43C in Prime95. I definitely won the lottery. Delidding dropped my load temps by 16C. Idle temps are as low as 17C. (I have my computer in front of an AC window unit.)

    For your temperature, we need to add the T°ambient for have the real t° ? or your T° is with the T°ambiant ?

    Ok, i have this CPU. I was able to get to 5.1ghz with corsair H60 pre-applied thermal paste. got up to 72C during cinebench. I had to go clear to 1.39v before I could get it to run at 5.1ghz. Is that just silicon lottery? Also when you talk about the other reviewers not being able to get to 5ghz even after delidding. What would be their limiting factor, how much voltage they have to apply to reach said speed, and ultimately temperature?

    does the DRAM Voltage influence the ability to raise the CPU core voltage? So i use MSI Memory try it and i set the ram to 2933 mhz at 1,4 V. can i now also overclock my 8600k to 5 ghz with 1,35 V? thank you!
