    Wow, this is the first time I've really gotten a proper glimpse of William Goldsmith. If anyone can't appreciate just how good his performance is, then you've absolutely no idea what you're talking about. He delivers tons of aggressive energy, while keeping all the tempos in-check and steady throughout-in front of a festival crowd, no less. If you've never been on a big stage, you likely can't understand what that requires. The drumming here is as good as any drumming performance you'll hear on any live Foo Fighters gig. And that's no disrespect to Taylor Hawkins whatsoever. R.I.P. Taylor. Taylor Hawkins inspired legions of fans, and his passing was a tragic event. But this performance from William should not be underestimated for even a second.

    • @jacquesdemolay5171
      @jacquesdemolay5171 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@johnkyle2205 I think that's because Dave started the tune way too fast, and William is pulling it back a bit to settle into a proper groove. If you listen to the couple of breakdowns in the middle of the tune where it's just Dave, he's playing slower as well. Live songs typically have a tendency to be faster than the studio versions, but if you listen to this tune from the album, it's quite a bit slower.

      @SXI96 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@alexyerkey3141 He's a solid drummer who does justice to Dave's drumming parts IMHO.. his sound mix is way too loud though and I don't like his snare drum

    • @joshuaireland5510
      @joshuaireland5510 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Sorry but just from the first tune you can tell his drumming is not up to par. He's never really in the pocket and the kick drum is especially bad. Almost like it's switching between swing and straight time. Taylor did not have that kind of slop and obviously neither did Dave. I get the pressure of a live performance with an audience but I've heard random local drummers with better time than this frankly. I actually enjoy William on some of the SDRE stuff but FF clearly wasn't a good fit for him. But hey if you enjoy it then more power to ya

      I`ve been a musician for 40 years. Played in lots of rock bands as bassist but I`m also a drummer. I can tell you, by listening to this William wasn`t the right drummer for FF. The sound on this video is brutal, as many live audio videos from the 90s was as producers saved money by using a stereo mix from the mixer. It doesn`t do William any favors but also shows how his style wasn`t right for FF. He fit SDRE very good as it was more prog rock. But FF is playing more 4-4 rock and it needs another type of drummer to sound good live.

That being said...you and your deep musical i.q. should realize that it's one thing to learn drum parts that were laid out for you , to play live ...versus coming up with your own ideas , and being able to lay down solid tracks in the studio . I have a couple friends in the know ....who said he was a train wreck in the studio when they tried recording TCATS . Furthermore ...he wasn't fired , he was offered to keep playing with them ... his fragile ego couldn't handle it.

    At gigs, sound engineers mix for the venue, not for an album release. The fact that the mix is mainly drums and vocals says that Pat and Dave's guitars were probably way too loud and drowning out the drums. It's all about finding the right balance.
    Also, Goldsmiths drumming really isn't bad at all. He's literally playing the parts that Dave recorded on the record and he's doing them well. If he misses a beat, it might be because the poor cunt is playing a show every other day across the country. And especially early on in the show, you're still getting warmed up and getting the kit adjusted to your preference as, often, you'll use someone else's backline and they might have the toms/stands placed differently to how you like them. Regardless, I can't hear him fluff any fills or anything. I think he's a fucking incredible drummer, Theo B by SDRE is proof. He's not missing the fills on This Is A Call, the toms just werent high in the mix. Sound guy is clearly still getting levels and dealing with the presumably obnoxiously loud guitars.

    Not sure why people are shitting on William...dude is killing it. The guitars are way more out of tune at times than anything else.

    • @haraldsletterod
      @haraldsletterod 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Back then it was sort of cool to not care about guitars being out of tune. Everyone was into blues and Rolling Stones and shabby rock and roll. William is a good drummer but his style didn`t fit the band. He was used to play more prog and FF was even back then a pretty much 4-4 rock band.

    David Eric Grohl (Warren, Ohio, 14 de enero de 1969) es un músico multiinstrumentista estadounidense de rock. Saltó a la fama a comienzos de los años 1990 como batería de la icónica banda de grunge Nirvana. En 1994, tras la muerte de Cobain y el fin de Nirvana, formó otra banda, Foo Fighters, siendo él en un principio el único miembro y más tarde el vocalista, guitarrista y compositor.

    For those who say William sucks, are probably comparing him to Taylor, which is unfair. That said, Taylor is by far a more superior drummer in terms of confidence of his instrument, nuance, and technique. “Cows” unfortunately for William makes my point. If you listen to Taylor playing “Cows” it’s night and day. William is ok as a tour drummer for FF at the time, but as we all know, the studio sessions for their follow up album exposed him and we all know what happened. He will go down with names like Scott Raynor, John Rutsey, etc

    • @robheflin5639
