  • So many people who have weight loss surgery think they MUST go to the gym in order to lose weight or maximize their results. But this is a lie. The gym is not good for weight loss, especially after surgery, and here is why.

    I'm a personal trainer and I agree! Your focus in the beginning should be on identifying poor habits, emotional triggers, and eating right. Pushing someone in a training session who can't perform a workout due to lack of energy (caused by a low caloric intake) just opens the door for inefficiencies and injuries. Focus on THOUGHTS, HABITS, and FOOD. That applies to everyone! You can't outrun your fork. Training too early can also spike your appetite due to the demand you are putting on your body. Give yourself some grace.

    • @officialbariatrica7212
      @officialbariatrica7212 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      As a personal trainer, you should know how to adjust for low-calorie intakes, which is what can happen. This man even suggests that you don't even walk. You journal and meditate. Go check out his Facebook page if you don't believe me. Even the Obesity Action Coalition suggests just basic walking until at 6 weeks post-op and then more exercise can be added. If as a personal trainer you can not research what is needed post-surgery then you should not be working with bariatric patients.

To anyone getting upset or saying he's contradictory, he keeps saying this applies only 1-6 months after surgery when we shouldn't be consuming extra calories only to be working them off. I love that he addresses getting therapy; I've joined several WLS groups and see that many , even after incredible success losing weight, are still miserable because they didn't address the issues that caused us to put on weight in the first place.

    I absolutely love this guy! Everything he says makes perfect sense. I’m almost 4 week post vsg surgery and have worked out everyday since week 1. I’ve plateaued with my weight loss and I know it’s from an increased appetite resulting in snacking because I can’t take in enough calories in one meal. My head is only half straight. The late night cravings are back and I’m constantly hungry. I noticed the cravings increased as my exercise intensity increased. Therefore I’m backing away from the exercise for now until I can better grasp these changes. Thank you Dr. V you’re amazing!

      I was not going to the gym but I was doing at home walking videos 6 days a week for 30 mins for 2.5 weeks straight and I started one week post op. I lost absolutely nothing. I said to myself I can't eat I can't get my water in, how am I gonna lose weight 😫. As someone who have lost 56 lbs on WW without working out and never lost weight while going to a gym, I decided I was not going to listen to the surgeon but proceed like I have in the past. As soon as I stopped working out I was down a pound and by the time of my one month check up I was down 4 lbs. I had experienced a stall less than a month out of surgery. I focused on getting my protein and water in and the weights finally started to drop. I am just at the start of month three but will continue to focus on the protein and water and if I start experiencing another stall then I will switch it up and bring in exercise.

    I originally watched this video right after my weight loss surgery. Today, 4 months later, I revisited it. Makes total sense. I've been convincing myself that I need to go to the gym because everyone has noticed the weight loss and my skin is starting to sag in spots. Going through your video again, I realized that the gym is not what I need. I need to keep focused on what I eat and how I feel inside. I'm making progress - I just need to stay focused. Thank you for logical, straightforward talk regarding. The pressure to work out and go to the gym. I have not gone to the gym yet and I am almost 13 months post-op. I have cited these exact reasons when someone questions me as to why I have not participated. I have not been ready. I am still having some difficult with my eating habits. I have lost 106 pounds and am 10 pounds from a normal bmi. I think as a WLS patient--there is a tendency to either to feel judged or be judged from society. Therefore the desire to make our weight loss appear "natural" (I hate that term) is greater. I did have help-I am very thankful for it. I have had to make serious changes to my behaviors. I think the weight loss community can be our own harshest critics-everyone should learn the best way to lose and maintain weight loss for themselves. Stop spending time justifying our choices to others--in the end one must live with the results of our choices. Great video. Thank you for sharing.

      I would say to go very slowly as you increase your physically activity. You don't start with a Full Gym Workout; you go slow and then build but most importantly you must match your caloric intake with the exertion. IF your eating properly and taking in enough of the right calories, you will see slow but steady weight loss which is the best way. A good rule of thumb as to weight loss; the fast it comes off the faster it will come back. Slowly and carefully is the best way.

      Sharleen Davis hey what is your gym routine and food routine from 4 weeks post op. I intend to get physical too to speed it up. And 3kg a week sounds amazing. I’m just not sure whether I should lean towards cardio or weight training. Having never been to the gym before I’m not sure what exactly is to be done. I don’t want excess skin but I’m considering liposuction in a years time if any does appear! I’m currently nearly 3 weeks post op. Started at 121kg. I’m 110kg now. In lbs that’s 242 I think the last time i converted on google. I can manage 10,000 steps easily but it’s not something I do everyday. So I was just wondering how does the gym life work for us and what do you eat/drink from now on. I’m not fussy to blend my protein chicken. I’m not at that stage yet for another 2 days

    • @bigpappahemi4263

      Liposuction WILL NOT remove excess skin! It has to be cut off. I go to the gym every day and can telling you from experience that it does increase my hunger somewhat. The benefits of moderate exercise far outweigh the negatives. My mobility is better because I'm stronger. I have much less pain. I feel better about myself mentally. It helps with my lymphedema. Work on building your stamina, strength and mobility and you will feel better over all. Don't push yourself too hard and make sure your expectations match what going to the gym will really do for you. I wish you much success and happiness!

    I am 54 about due to have VSG in 2 months. I have lost weight 3 times in my life and always put it back on because of poor eating habits. This made so much sense. I started going to the gym 10 years ago when I lost a lot of weight but I hit a plateau. I enjoyed it there, put my kids in the creche and treated myself to a spa after workout... but eventually became frustrated, diet derailed and rturned to work and lost focus. This made SO MUCH SENSE. I have already changed my diet and am transitioning to protein shakes and restricting carbs and sugars. I am also going to start walking - better to be active. I have found that finally getting a date for surgery (2 and 1/2 year on waiting list) have motivated me to make positive changes. Kind of kickstarted my brain... I appreciate Dr V's straight talk

    I wish I would have seen your videos when I had surgery ( gastric sleeve ). I had a goal in mind to join the military after I lost enough weight. I called my surgeons office and I got the go ahead to hit the gym 3 months post op. I started at 295 lbs and got down to 181 lbs. I increased my workout routine but I never got lower than that all while, like you said, my hunger went up. I passed the asvab with an 80 for the Navy and passed my physical at MEPS to join. But I was pulled aside and told weight loss surgery is a disqualification with no possibility for a waiver. My recruiter tried talking to her command officer with no luck.
    Soo now I'm back at my desk job with no motivation to go to the gym, pretty sure my sleeve is stretched out from eating to consume enough calories for working out. I'm 27 now and sitting at 225 lbs thinking of how stupid my mistakes and thinking were/are. Thanks for your videos

    This guy is awesome. I am 6 years post surgery and was with a man who was disgusted by the remaining fat and skin and shamed me for not going to the gym. I went to the gym and got bigger. Neither he nor I have "skinny brain," and this stuff would have been nice to know before I tried to change things for that butt-wipe. Not even my trainer knew this. This is good stuff here. I always knew that the surgery would only get me to the top of the crap pile, out of the mire, but it wouldn't mean I didn't still have to still get rid of the crap pile. Don't ever give up. If you fall down, get back up. The weight loss is a tool in your tool box that you can use to heal completely. There is still work involved. Like this Dr. says, you have to get there first.

    Although I agree with a lot with what he said, I do not think it applies to all people. I gymmed and ate reasonably well before my surgery (was never that large and only just qualified for the private system) but for me getting back into the gym two weeks post op was me getting back into routine. I'm not doing it for weight loss, I do it because it makes me feel good and motivates me to eat well. I feel for me I get enough calories to work out and feel good about it. Just my experience though! I'm sure his advice is fantastic for those who it applies to

      Hi Ellie thanks for posting this. I am due surgery in October as I'm huge, but I'm super active. I swim 3 times a week and on Monday I cycled 11 miles. The idea of not exercising post op worries me as I would miss it and also feel it is important for a healthy heart to be active. I guess maybe his video is geared at people who live a sedentary lifestyle??!

    • @C.Medina
      @C.Medina 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@jena425 hi Jen, as Ellie said, she paid to do her surgery thru private sector and she is low in the spectrum guessing she did the surgery with a bmi between 30 to 35 (which is not approved by insurance). In your case if you have a bmi from 35 to 40 like me and you are athlete you will be fine swimming after the first month (consult your doctor when will be ok). Swimming and cycling is cardio, so when you are tired just stop. The point for the 6 to 12 months is to lose all the weight, then you be full force back on track.
      This come for a person that did sport all his life. I played water Polo from 5 to 26 years old,then tennis for 10 years, and since 2016 cycling (gravel cycling).
      My surgery will be September 15 this year, and like you I have the same question. Luckily I have a cyclist friend that did the wls and told me the same things I'm telling you. "You be weak but after the 8 to 12 month you be in shape and full of energy, the wait is worth it".
      Keep in touch, maybe we can trade things we learn while losing weight. 😊👍.
      Welcome to the new bariathlete world!

For a while I wasn’t going due to my schedule…I’ve been trying to go 2 days a week and do some low intensity cardio at home 2 days a week, so working out 4 days. I don’t want to be sedentary…I want to be active. So exercise till I feel tired? Then stop? That makes sense to me but want to make sure…maybe work out 3 days a week instead of 4? I disagree with some of your lose skin comments. My pics show a huge difference in my skin. I did take time to really learn about nutrition and eating whole real foods too but what about your patients who do have a goal at the gym that is NOT just weight loss at the gym yet they have not fixed their head in other areas of their life.
