I like the Strike King Chick Magnet for the winter fishing

I always upsize the hooks on the shad rap gets it down some and easier to throw.

Thanks, Matt. Northerner transplanted to TN so winter fishing is on. I so wish I could develop any kind of confidence with any lipped crank baits. I try, and then go back to my jerkbaits, jigs, and A rigs. Here's an idea for a vid: determining crank air behavior by visually inspecting. If this is something too basic, and I just don't know, my bad.

I remember the first bass I caught fishing a crankbait in the winter time. I was using the silver with black back size 7 shad rap.
I caught a 7 pounder on it that day and that was in 1982. Man it was cold that day and I still remember how much fun it was.

Cool to hear you enjoy the Dou Realis M65 and the Frittside 5 - I recently purchased a few of each - I look forward to using them when we have open water again (April ? May ?) - thank you as always for the info !

I was. 16 years old. When shad raps came on the scene. Seemed like earlier tho. Most talked about sought after. Lures ever. It was the rage.

The Shad Rap is a secret killer!! Unfortunately I’ve not had any success on Berkley cranks but I’m sure I just don’t give them enough time. Rock crawlers have really worked well for me too in the cold!

Surprised the Wiggle Wart didn't make the cut.

You turned me on to the M65. I love the 11A in T Bone when they’re on crappie or shad. I like the Bagley B flat when it’s cold. It has a real tight wobble

I just got an uglystick carbon rod 7 ft MH. I put a JM left-handed baitcaster on it. It seems ok. It really reminds me of my shimano Clarus as far as the feel goes.

I smash them on the Frittside lineup in WA state. The 5 & 7 mostly but I have had some great days with the 5 Biggun’ as well. The other crank bait I do very well on when the water is in the low to mid 40’s is a 1.0 KVD squarebill in Fire Craw. With all these I don’t run them into rock or wood like I always see suggested by Pro’s, instead, I basically am “swimming” them through/over the top of vegetation.

Threw a shad rap most of the day, if there is any wind its like a flying potato chip. Haven't had much luck with any crankbait in the cold water so far this season.

I'm surprised you didn't mention the flicker shad. Similar to shad rap, can be worked like a jerk bait, runs really deep, can be fished on bait casting gear.

Lot of diehard fans of the flicker Shad

Raid Level Shad. Suspends. Tungsten weight transfer places it well beyond other Shad baits on the cast. 4# test leader on 7# Almight sinking braid. Ugly Ducklings come in a floating or sinking shad bait that get the nod, too. eBay. Have you tried the new elite Shad rap? They are supposed to weigh more than the original and come in that #7 you like.

That Ftrittsides is great for all seasons. I burn the red one in summer. Flat sided red crankbait in summer goes against what we're taught for decades but it's my go to.

HOW THE HECK IS A ROCK CRAWLER not on this list there’s a few in the 8 foot range now to and they get hammered all winter 🥶

I hate this list. I run Fat Free and pearly squarebills. Don't really care for others. Have too many. For winter depths, I run other lures. Too many cool lures to run strictly cranks.
