      Some of It was based off of the Temptations as well. Lead singer showing up late, lead singer leaving the group to go solo, the choreography from one of the group members was rubbed down and replaced by a professional choreographer, each group member taking a lead on the same song. Those things happened to the Temptations not the Dells.

      In the behind the scenes documentary by Robert Townsend he said that David Ruffin, and another original Temptation I think it was Eddie Kendricks as imput/inspiration, but their was some issues with how Big Reds portrayal would be confused with Berry Gordy and they had to nix the Temptations assistance. So then production went with the Dells to assist in portrayal. So it's a blend of the Temptations, and the Dells.

    I have said for years ,I respect the legacy of all the Temptations, and Otis Williams as the lone surviving original member is seen as the torch bearer of the Tempts for the most part, but the legacy of the estates of the Temptations should be respected as well. Particularly those of the most known version the Classic Five lineup. To me the Sons of Motown is who should be carrying the Temptations banner now. Otis is well into his 80s as of this writing and Ron Tyson the longest tenured current Tempt with Otis ,voice is long gone. Pass the baton to the Sons of Motown which also feature,Melvin Franklin Jr Paul Williams Jr Glen Leonard Jr and Richard Street Jr. If Otis has to be involved let him.co-manage them with Shelley Berger ,but pass the baton to the Sons of Motown

  • @Frnk_3
    @Frnk_3 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    All respect to Mr. DRJ, the fact he’s never been offered to be a Tempt doesn’t shock me tho. He’s right about the whole power thing, 100%. Do I think Otis and Shelly are to blame? Partially. What about Motown (and later UMG)? The actual suits behind this. Plus, the movie was took from Otis’ book, yes. However artistic liberties were taken by NBC and DePasse Entertainment so it wasn’t verbatim. AT ALL.
    Another example of this is Paul Williams Jr. His dad (the iconic and talented Paul Sr.) was the first Temptation to pass on in 1973. Paul Jr was 7, maybe 8? So obviously it’s a given that they already had Richard Street they would’ve stuck with him. Also let me be clear real quick, I LOVE Richard. Ain’t no shade on him/his legacy. He was perfect. You’d think later on in the early 90s tho, after Richard left, Paul Jr. woulda been offered but nah. He hasn’t been offered shit! The Temptations still haven’t had a TRUE baritone since 1971. Seeing Paul Williams Jr. up there with a group his dad helped build would’ve been something fuckin MAGICAL. Paul Jr. (luckily) got to join Dennis Edwards’ Temptations, be in the Sons of Motown, and started his own Tempts group.
    Same with Melvin Franklin Jr. who like Paul Jr. sang with the Sons of Motown but has never been offered a Bass Singer spot despite his dad and Otis being practically like brothers for almost 40 years (1958-1995). Once again an original/classic 5 Tempt’s son who is literally his dad in looks and voice, and was just passed up. The only other guy who could actually do the job properly, Jawan Jackson, is luckily up on stage with the Tempts currently. He’s actually the BEST bass they’ve had in damn near 30 years since Melvin Sr. died. However, like with Paul Jr., I wish Melvin was considered.

      I don’t think it’s necessarily true that Otis portrayed himself positively. In a lot of scenes it can be interpreted that he was a massive control-freak who had to have things a specific way or a bit of a hater.
      It does show one of the many reasons Eddie left the group because Otis at the time was being a control freak and Eddie didn’t feel like he had a say in anything.

    The miniseries portrayed everyone
    in a bad light with Paul being a drunk,
    David an addict,Otis being hardcore,etc.
    We need to raise some funds to
    make a proper Temptations’ movie.
    And doesn’t David Jr stop to think
    that Otis is almost 83 years old,
    and might forget certain conversations?
    It also might be too painful for him
    to sing with his former band mates’ sons.
