I'm not a total beginner, but pretty close... just at the point where I can play the basic open chords cleanly and change between them without too much delay. This video is just what I needed and actually one of the best guitar instruction videos I've ever seen. And I've been looking at guitar videos for a while now. I just subscribed and am looking forward to seeing more of your instructions. I especially liked the emphasis/instruction on strumming in this one; something I'm really needing to work on. Just knowing the chords is not enough and I could feel and hear my strumming get better as I played along with this. You are very clear in your instruction without speeding through any part of it as some instructors do. Great job!😊
Without a doubt, the best instructor on TH-cam. Your thorough approach to every facet of the song is spot on. Thank you for making better guitar players.
I appreciate the detail (clear and precise), the play along opportunities, and I really like the explanation about the how and why of chord transitions around the G chord.
I don't play the guitar, I'm a beginner ukulele learner. I was looking for strumming patterns out there for this song and your video is the best one. Thanks very much for such a nice video, helped tremendously.
Thank you for your lessons. You, more than anyone else, seem to resonate with my style of learning. You deserve more subs. Please don't stop making these vids. You are helping regular folks, like myself, immensly.
It's missing words to express how much this lesson provided for someone with tremendous strumming dificulties that has been online for more than a year learning guitar playing through video sharing platforms. Yes, I subscribed your channel right away. Keep up with your outstanding work while I'll recomend it among others.
Just the best lessons.!! ...Love your relaxed and patient style and the feeling for the music you convey to us. Your logical presentation is easy to follow and always clear. Thank you Dave
Love this song, one of my favourites. The 2 finger G was actually the first way I ever played it, still do a lot of the time. This is one of those songs where you're basically playing the vocals...with fill ins. Which is another of my favourite things. A lot of the time I fill in between the beats with an arpeggio leading into the next chord. Thing is I don't think I have ever played this song the same way twice. Including the ending. I like songs like this you can play differently each time because for one it's less boring and secondly you and the song evolve as I think music should. Keeping it recognisable of course, you don't want to end up playing a different song... There are songs that you can't alter too much but when you can then be creative with it whether it's the rhythm or the solo. It's kinda the point of making music. This song is one you can be creative with. The lyrics ain't half bad either.
You're great at teaching, you have lots of patience for teaching the details that make a real difference and you're a good explainer. Keep up the good work!
OMG! I learned more about playing a guitar via this video then any one has every tried to teach me in my 55 years of life. why could you have not been my teacher in school. I am fudging crying because I finally get it because of your video. I can play any thing now. You just change my life and thank you so much. I will do my best to teach everyone who wants to learn what you just taught me. Turbo
The more I watch these videos, the more I like the style and the focus of the lesson i.e. The chords, the strumming (different patterns while keeping the rhythm) and finally the song. More, please, Dave!
I thoroughly enjoy your lessons, and I have learned much from you in only a couple weeks time. I only discovered you recently and look forward to learning more. Your style of teaching is the best on the net, in my opinion. Thank you
Excellent lesson dave. Stopped playing 38 years ago because I though my fingers would never cooperate. Began again two weeks ago, and this time they are cooperating. The difference is that I started with a left handed guitar, being left handed. What do you know, I should have gone with a right handed guitar. My left hand was supposed to do the chords and notes, not the strumming! We learn something new every day.
Thank you for showing me new ways to carry the strumming. I love to play around with this song but never seam to have a flow to end. If that makes sense.
Thank you Dave as a beginner I'm really enjoying this lesson! Always coming back to it and slowly getting more fluent and confident. I love the rhythm of this piece. 👏🏻😁
Material called "easy" can be made so special by the art applied. Look at Elvis and Scotty Moore, made history polishing easy material as a base they made special. Elvis always made material special by adding his art and making his own path. Growing up my friends would laugh and say "That is easy",yet NOT 1 of them could play and make one of them songs special.
Been following Dave and Nashville just recently but I think he is one of the best teachers I've seen. I just ordered one of his books: The Perpetual Beginner. Looking forward to it.
Thank you for your words. I never thought about playing a song not completely like the original or even from an instructor online. I should have you know. The song Stand By Me is done in so many ways, none of which are the same. From now on I will be making songs my own, using the skills I have and enjoying myself more instead of trying to copy someone perfectly. Thank you. Be safe.
As a fingerstyle player, I've been playing this song longer than any other, and it's always my goto when everything else turns to crap. Great lesson, I'll have to try the strumming version.
You are a fantastic teacher, Calm and methodical. I used to learn from you on Jam play that i don't have anymore so i was very happy to find your own u tube channel yay. Keep up the great work please . Thank you :)
You answered so many questions that others have failed to and also some I never knew I had! :) top job, great teach . all the best & thank you for your help.
I had to watch this one again. Hand down the best tutorial on youtube covering this song. so much detail, tips and nice play along section. Dave covers all the bases!
Hi Dave, thanks for all your detail and great techniques. Self taught left handed player and I like the the ghost strums. I would like to see you cover California blue by Roy Orbison some time in the future. I realise there is a bit more involved in that song but it also only uses a few essential chords.
Nice job sir, including the use of the pinky on the Am chord. A variation I use is, after hitting the Am, morph to Am7, including the pinky. I find it helps my minor vocal line.
Oh my!! I'm so happy to find you! Thank you so much, as I've just had a few lessons and am learning this. You're really explaining it well, ghost strums? wow, thank you!
Dave ,Hands Down The VERY BEST cover and teaching of this song, old dog here learning at 62 to play guitar, been learning this my first Song , and your presentation had me doing more than G down 2 ,D down 2 then A min down 4 . Thank You
Great lesson tip here with the two finger method. I'm a beginner, and have found it absolutely impossible to have my third finger on the low E, and pinky on the high E, and trying to bend my third finger, to keep from muting the A. Been wrestling with this for weeks now! This brings up a question - are there many instances where you use the flat part of a finger on a certain string, and just do not worry about muting the string next to it? Thank you!
I finally have the continued hand strumming and hitting the strings when I want to but when I put the song on it seems to be going way slower that the speed of that your going at. So starting at g to D I only seem to beable to strum 2 down strums for each g and d chord?
It's because the pulse - the strongest beat - is slow, but the strum divides that pulse into sixteenth notes, four to a beat. We don't strum them all, though. So the strum is (basically) 1 and-a 2, 3-e-and-a 4...but you can try just tapping your foot on the strong pulse and strumming the four subvisions to start with. One-e-and-a two-e-and-a, etc. That should help you feel it.
Nashville Guitar Guru Thank you for your time! and thanks for these video’s to help people like myself get more interested in guitar and realize that it’s a good idea to get lessons either online or in person.
This fella is by far one of the best teachers on the internet anywhere and I would like to let him know that I appreciate what he is doing thanks alot buddy I wish I could do more than just subscribe to your chanal
Tim, basically it's just a variation of strumming a chord differently. what ever you think sounds best go for it. remember, you are trying to play someone else's version of a song. play it how you like as long as it songs good and close to the original.
Great lesson, I’m working through your beginner lessons on Jamplay and I have to say I’m making more progress than I could have imagined. Keep up the great work. subscibed.
Great tutorial. I'm going to make this a goal. (I'm a little lost on the 1 ee and a 2 ee and a 3 ee and a 4, can't tell which he's strumming on and which he's skipping)
No there are two more cords to it . I have been playing this song since I was 12 or 14 I am now going to be 65 . Sorry folks if You just play two cords for the chorus it is not going to sound correct. Besides there are cord extensions that sound awesome .
I love the part on the strumming!. Thanks!

Such a great method of explaining the guitar. As good as they get on you tube. Slow, precise, clear definition of skills to progress. Thanks
I appreciate the detail (clear and precise), the play along opportunities, and I really like the explanation about the how and why of chord transitions around the G chord.
