I'm a rare books librarian and archivist and I just wanted to say not to put the pictures back into the album! Paper made during the industrial revolution was when it began to truly wane in quality and became highly acidic (this is why book pages from the 1800-2000's are so brittle but we have books from the 1500's that are like new). This will break down the photographs, but also traces of adhesive left behind will also cause the photographs degrade even further. The plastic bags aren't great for preservation, so if you did want to protect the photos, I'd put them in some acid free envelopes or in mylar!
I highly doubt she’s interested in preserving them, tbh hahahah from what I gathered of what she said she will just glue them on the walls unprotected or something similar...

It kind of hurts at the thought of destroying antique photos and artwork like this but I also wish people like bunny knew things like this so she could better preserve them OR give them to people who catalog them.
I REALLY wish the photos nailed to the walls were in antique frames which I'm sure she also has ,💔💔💔

She would never destroy antiques. Period. -She bought the pics at the wall in an antiqueShop where they already had the holes and nails to dispay em. Thats why she said about those tiny ones that she would _glue_ them to the wall. And i'm freaking sure that If she hat 100 teeny tiny frames for the 100 teeny tiny pics that she would do the 1+1=2 and put the pics in the frames.

Some other comments were just trying to say to preserve them longer,there are methods, not that she couldn't do what she wants with her things it was just an observation is all. I collect tin types! These are called gem tin types. They were one of the very first portable pictures, and were commonly carried by soldiers in their wallets or tiny albums. Sometimes the photographers would hand tint pink cheeks on the faces to make them look more lively.

Imagine, when these portraits were made, all the effort and time that went into them. The people who loved these people, I wonder how they’d feel about them being put on someone’s wall years and years later... would they be happy that these images were still being loved and cared for..?
I know I would be especially as a photographer myself I know how much care I still put into taking pictures.

when I have passed a hundred years from now.
Tiny Tinny portraits were carried by soldiers during the Civil War and by their loved ones.
Perhaps these albums were made to put those in after the war to keep for family.
Or, perhaps it was normal to send family these.
It took a long time for the camera to finally take the shot, it’s easier to just be normal than try to smile for 60 seconds or more.
It is actually a type of negative before negatives were invented
Tintype
I was speaking to the question of WHY are the tin types so small. I have pictures...actual pictures made from tin type, of my great grandfather that are exactly the size of your tintypes that are so small. My great grandmother also kept one of the pictures in a tiny little oval frame that had a cover that latched over the picture to protect it. The picture is of him in his civil war uniform.
In Charleston SC there's a museum with a whole miniature portrait gallery, super cool!
Gem tintypes were most affordable, faster to produce, and an ideal size for including in a locket or mourning jewelry.
People didn't smile often because the speed of the shutter was really slow and the had to keep the same expresion for minutes.

Some of those look like post mortem keepsake photos. The “books” under the arm...could be props to hold them up.
I was thinking this too! Especially the subjects with the lighter eyes, that’s usually a good giveaway that it’s a “death portrait”.

I was thinking the same thing for sure! It’s interesting to wonder about that. You can tell the ones that are alive because they are posed “normally” and just sitting regularly. The one with the pockestwatch almost looked like he was lying down on something and that’s why there was something off about his eyes. The sitting guy with the standing guy, the sitting guy could have been deceased (so getting the sitting position may not be the lucky one). And the guy leaning with the tassel things under his arm could have been posed that way too. I dunno.
I kinda love/hate when there is no story to these pictures because it’s fascinating and I want to know!

I love looking at old photos and things.
Tin types were usually used for keepsakes. More specifically, soilders (first introduced around the Civil War) would take them to keep pictures of their families with them. They were light, durable, and inexpensive. Tin types were the new cheap alternative so it allowed the lower/middle class to finally have portraits. Because before then, only upper class/upper middle could afford portraits because they were painted. The reason why people didn’t smile in portraits back then was due to the fact that taking the photo took several minutes, so it was more comfortable to not smile. It would be quite difficult for someone to smile for 3 to sometimes 7 or more consecutive minutes. I took a photo history class this past semester. Hope this helps answer your questions!
I love old photos. When I got sick and had to make the decision to go on palliative care I had to pass on the photos of my great great grandparents and all the photos of my fathers family to family it broke my heart knowing they don’t and won’t treasure them like I do. I even thought at the time I’d rather send them to Bunny because you would appreciate them and their story even though they aren’t her family. Thank you for saving and sharing this snapshots of history. 💜

I share your same love for interesting antiques. I love the energy stamped into these objects. The bits of soul still attached. I can feel the heartache and joy they have given to those in the past. I can spend days in antique stores and booths.

People didnt smile alot in photos back then because it took a long exposure time and it was harder to hold a smile the exact same than a relaxed face. Esp a group photo. Any movement messed up the photo. Also alot of photos esp of children they are death photos. Photography was expensive so not everyone could afford to have a photo so if a child died they used to pose them for a photo for memorializing
there's also a trend with children in photography, i think it's called Ghost Mother or Phantom mother or something. The mother would be hidden, draped in a curtain, while holding their baby still for the picture!

Bunny, a couple of these looked like death photos. It was not uncommon in the time to prop up the body in chairs etc.. to take a last photo for the loved ones. There were a couple that had that gone expression. and one guy looked like he might actually be reclining instead of standing.

Some might be but Ask a Mortician has a video where she debunks certain props that people thought that held up the dead. However glassy expressions and sleeping people could be dead.

These old pictures/newspapers/diaries/dolls/toys....anything really that is personal to someone is so so special and interesting to me. I cant wait to see the diary video!!! My favourite portrait was the last gentleman. He was handsome and looked almost so modern.

I collect tin types as well! And normally, if they're that small, they were for necklce locketes. 🤗😁 and I'm jealous of this album! I'd love to own one like that!

My mom and myself found some tin type pictures of family members a few years ago. It was in my mamaw's things after she passed away. What surprised me, is that some of the people were Native American, we had no idea we had Indian in our bloodline.
You should have a DNA test done to see how far down the bloodline goes. It would be an awesome thing to pass down to your grandchildren along with the photos. 😊

My great great grandpa was born in 1900, and my grandfather has all of these photos from when he was in the military, and in there original frames. It’s so amazing!! He even has old letters he sent to home. I love photos!!

Maybe they made them that small for soldiers to carry during war? Or stick in their helmets so they didn't take up too much space or could be hidden

It’s Round Top I used to live and work in that area. Twice a year the road floods with people and the Elemetary kids have to be picked up at the high school. Haha good times

Because of your love for antique type things, you have given the people in your pictures immortality. Instead of their pictures fading away to dust, they will now forever be frozen in time for people today to enjoy and imagine what their life was like and who they were. pretty cool!
I have this exact album but it’s filled with the pictures. I never thought I would see another. Wow! I am an antique photography collector and have about five hundred cabinet photos, Tin types, daguerreotypes, and ambrotypes. I also collect the 1800’s leather bound photo albums. I love to see a fellow collector’s collection. Awesome Bunny!!!

I remember Spoon River Anthology and it made an impression on me as well! We did a project on a few of the poems and we went to the graveyard and read the poems in the snow at night. It felt like such a magical experience!

I adore things like this. My husband collects stamps, mainly Victorian Penny Reds, and he always puts the ones that are still attached to the envelope/letter to one side for me, because I love reading them and imagining the stories behind them 💕.

This is AMAZING! I collect antique and vintage photos. Tin types tend to scratch and can be damaged easily. I would def recommend you keep them in the bags and not put them in the album. They are so special.

It is morbid, however I'm curious about how many of them were photographed after they died? I have heard that that you'd only have one picture in your life during that time period and it was taken after you passed away. So sad to think you're memory is immortalized during your death.

My nana’s childhood portraits have the pink coloring of the cheeks and lips and they even gave the eyes a blue tint. Back in the 30s. These remind me so much of them. I miss my nana very much, as she passed in February. This makes me want to go on a treasure hunt through my Nana’s things. ❤️

I love to buy old nursing / medical reference books at antique stores. Fascinating to see how far we have come. Also, many of those photos are “death” photos, particularly the ones with props or with other people supporting them.

I could be wrong but I remember my mother telling me this when I asked her why they didn't smile in pictures. So it can be wrong but I think that it sounds correct... But anyway...
They did not smile because of how long it would take to get the picture done and then later on they didn't smile because they didn't want to take a bad picture. They couldn't retake the photos or even see them till later so they did not want to risk getting a bad picture by smiling when they can get decent photos by not smiling.
Misplaced Texas Woman here...cities in Texas...1 is Round Rock and 1 is Round Top, so you go girl! Some were made for smaller albums...travel with them visiting, even smaller for lockets. Especially during Georgian times.
That is super cool. Photographers kept a repertoire of their work to show penitential clients, perhaps that's what this is.They also used prop ups to hold the dead in place so they could be photographed. I love this kind of stuff too.
