  • Mother by Pink Floyd, the sixth track of The Wall.
    The Wall is a rock opera, telling the story of Pink, a man who builds a metaphorical wall around him, isolating him from the rest of the world.
    Mother is about Pink's over-protective mother and how she inadvertently helped isolate him behind his Wall.
    Made with Windows Movie Maker

      @@RawPower7 you need to hear entire album to understand the lyrics.Whole album is one story....and "mother" was just another person or system who controlled "him".....Mother is overprotective, gonna check out all your girlfriends for you, momma wont let anyone dirty get through.
      the last line
      Mother did it need to be so high, is reffering to the wall that she helped him build, but being the way she is, the thing is too damn high, and he has no way out...."Mother" is just another brick in the wall.....father dies at war ("Another Brick in the Wall"), molested by teachers ("The Happiest Days of Our Lives"), raised by overprotective mother ("Mother") ileft by his wife("Don't Leave Me Now" )....ans so on.....

      So one peron whom heard a song on a Jukebox in the 70's spread a love of that music to dozens if not hundreds of others, who'll continue the cycle!

      @@ralugosi much much more my friend. In the late 60's when they first started releasing albums they were very new, new style of music. A lot of people thought they'd fail cos its so different than what they were used to. In fact they were one of the best and most successful bands in the world. If you listen to a lot if their sings carefully and learn the meanings behind them, a lot are political and anti war. Roger Waters' (bass guitarist, guitarist and main vocalist) father died in WW2 when his fighter plane was shot down. He grew up without a father cos he died in the war. His songs are about how bad war is. They're very good and moving songs.
      This song is from the album "the wall". The Final Cut, Wish You Were Here, The Division Bell and Dark Side of The Moon are some of the best albums. Give them a listen, well worth it

    I watched "The Wall" for the first time on "Black Fly" LSD at 17 yrs old. I have been a much more conscientious human being. I accepted my pain..forgave my guilt, the wrongs of my abusive childhood, and the amount of loss that no 17 yr old should already carry..and moved on to a better life, now as a 45 yr old man.
    If drugs are used to expand the consciousness and the user is attuned to USING the drug to reach enlightenment, as opposed to weak entertainment. It changes lives. I'm a very happy 18 yr career Chef that has worked with world famous restaurants and Chefs and have lived peacefully, and meditatively, and love every minute and note that Pink Floyd has made my life to be...
    No one is alone in thier pain. We all feel it and we can all help each other to beat it. Music is a god who has all answers!

    its about a young boy that loses his father in the war and is raised by his overly protective mother. The child grows up alone as an outsider that absolutely does not fit in. He feels trapped by his overly protective environment while being shunned by the people around him. and when he says she is building a wall, he means she just wants the two to be trapped in a wall with only each other. It says, 'mother, did it have to be so high" because she built that wall too high. did that help?

    Roger Waters: "If you can level one accusation at mothers, it is that they tend to protect their children too much. Too much and for too long. This isn't a portrait of my mother, although one or two of the things in there apply to her as well as to I'm sure lots of other people's mothers."

    I know this song is about an overbearing/protective mother. But the thing I love about music, is you can always see it from your own perspective. My mom died 4 years ago of a heroin overdose and this song fills me with thoughts of her. All of the questions that he asks, and all of the questions I have for her, that she can no longer answer. “She won’t let you fly but she might let you sing”. Is how I feel everyday, I feel stuck - I have the words but I don’t have the ability to take myself higher. I have a little brother as well, and I feel like my perspective on this song would fit him perfectly. And she always told me I would always be her baby. “Mother, did it need to be so high?” Also fits my perspective of this song too well.

      Late 60's to early and mid 70's Music! Throw in a little Rush, a bit of Aerosmith, some Alan Parsons Project, a Blue Box of Beatles and just a touch of Bad Company.... and you'd have my album collection, circa 1980!
      But that collection included all of Pink Floyd's and Black Sabbath's works available, at that time!

    Waters went on to admit to Mojo that the overly protective suffocating mother portrayed in the song has some similarities to his own mum. He said: "My mother was suffocating in her own way. She always had to be right about everything. I'm not blaming her. That's who she was. I grew up with a single parent who could never hear anything I said, because nothing I said could possibly be as important as what she believed.

    The genius of Pink Floyd. To me this piece captures the dilemma of the relationship btw parents and adult children like nothing else.
    It's part of the album "The Wall" - symbol for protection and separation, inevitably enmeshed. It explores the dilemma of the child - how much you unveil of yourself, struggles, questions, insecurities and dreams. Bc the child trades off privacy and intimacy for support plus control, enmeshed- the wall. It shatters the narcissistic fantasy of the parent - that bc they wish well they can offer one w/o the other. They end up helping building the wall. Btw child and world. They are the world as well though...and their fate is to get it wrong at least to some degree, in one or the other direction - too little/too much involvement.
    I noticed that mother doesn't ask questions. She gets what the adult child wants to share of his inner monologue. And she doesn't offer answers either, she monologues about babying the young man, terrified of his emotions and pain.

    • @abysswatcher4907
      @abysswatcher4907 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A wall could be a form of protection yet at the same time isolation. Your comment captures the lyrics in a spiritual level, should definitely receive more likes.

    • @davidfong1565
      @davidfong1565 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Ya know, that's just how most mother's are. It's instinctive. That's why kids, especially boys, need a GOOD male role model and note that I stress GOOD. Rarely, you'll get a single mother situation where her father or brother is able to fill in that roll but usually you can take your pick of any one of several different fucked up situations such as multiple "boyfriends", a bad stepfather, even a bad father. Even so, there have been many men who have come from less than optimal(to put it tastefully!) childhood backgrounds and done well because they made good choices. Conversely, many have come from the most optimal backgrounds and ended up total train wrecks. The final responsibility lies with the individual and the choices they make.

    My Mother suffered from an illness before I was born. I was 28 years old, she was 60 years old when she died. My 2 older sisters lived their lives doing what they wanted while myself, the baby of the family had to deal with her illness far more than everyone else. It was extremely hard for my mom and myself. Her insecurities made her shelter me out of fear. This song hits home hard. It was a life of poverty, pills and illness. I was not flawless as a son, but id never leave you mom. I forgive everyone including myself, just hope she has done the same.
