This song has come to mind occasionally for the 40 plus years. I didn't remember the singer or title, only "last night I saw the werewolf, and the werewolf was crying. 43 yrs later, I found it on youtube, amazing!
Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf Comes a-stepping along He don't even break the branches Where he's been gone You can hear his long holler from away across the moor That's the holler of a werewolf when he's feeling poor He goes out in the evening when The bats are on the wing And he's killed some young maiden before the birds sing For the werewolf, for the werewolf Have sympathy Because the werewolf he is someone Just like you and me Once I saw him in the moonlight When the bats were a-flying All alone I saw the werewolf and The werewolf was crying Crying, "Nobody, nobody, nobody knows How much I love the maiden as I tear off her clothes" Crying, "Nobody, nobody knows of my pain When I see it has risen that full moon again" When I see that moon moving Through the clouds in the sky I get a crazy feeling and I wonder why Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf Comes traveling along He don't even break the branches Where he's been gone For the werewolf have pity, not fear, and not hate Because the werewolf might be someone That you've known of late Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf Comes traveling along He don't even crush the leaves Where he's been gone
So often one of my favorite songs by an artist (Cat Power) is actually a cover. Love this version even more. Another example is Cortez the Killer that Built to Spill sings really well is actually a Neil Young song, not surprised that man is one gifted song writer. Thank you!
I just watched a film called "The Living" that had this song as the intro. The haunting sound sets the tone perfectly for the dark subject (revenge & murder). I highly recommend the film to anyone who likes a bit of a slow burn that's intensely moody. I'm gonna check out michael hurley's other material, hopfully there's more like this. Thanks for sharing hannah, you've got good taste.
Graeme Mitchell Yeah, me too, Graeme - I made sure to watch the credits at the end so I could check out this song. The movie was great - very sad - the kid couldn't confront his brother in law but felt pressured to do something & got into a situation he had no control over. The actor who played him reminded me of a young John Savage & Chris Mulkey, who was so young & handsome in Twin Peaks, was totally creepy & terrifying in this.
Will check it out you would enjoy the movie Lucky 2017 based on Harry Dean Stanton it was basically his fair well to the world as he died the same year few songs of Micheal Hurley play at the end :))
Lyrics by Michael Hurley Oh the Werewolf, Oh the werewolf Comes a-stepping along He don't even break the branches Where he's been gone You can hear his long holler From way across the moor That's the holler of a werewolf When he's feeling poor He goes out in the evening when The bats are on the wing And he's killed some young maiden before the birds sing For the werewolf, For the werewolf Have sympathy cause the werewolf He's somebody like you or me Once I saw him in the moonlight When the bats were flying All alone I saw the werewolf And the werewolf was crying Crying "Nobody, nobody Nobody knows How much I love the maiden as I tear off her clothes Crying nobody, nobody Knows my pain When I see that it's risen, that full moon again" When I see that moon moving Through the clouds in the sky I get a crazy feeling and I wonder why Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf Comes traveling along He don't even break the branches Where he's been gone For the werewolf have pity, not fear, and not hate Because the werewolf might be someone That you've known of late Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf Comes traveling along He don't even crush the leaves Where he's been gone
Why he kills the things he loves. He just can't help it, I suppose...it's in the blood. In the comparative way, we have Bob Segar's "Night Moves" from his "Silver Bullet" Band.
I first heard Barry Dransfield's version of this so I came here to suss out the original, I must say I prefer Barry's take on it, it has that sparse Old English unearthlyness about it. Great song.

That really is a touching line.
Michael Hurley is criminally underecognised.
Right up there with John Prine in my opinion.
We recognize him and that’s cool 😎
Word.
Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf
Comes a-stepping along
He don't even break the branches
Where he's been gone
You can hear his long holler from away across the moor
That's the holler of a werewolf when he's feeling poor
He goes out in the evening when
The bats are on the wing
And he's killed some young maiden before the birds sing
For the werewolf, for the werewolf
Have sympathy
Because the werewolf he is someone
Just like you and me
Once I saw him in the moonlight
When the bats were a-flying
All alone I saw the werewolf and
The werewolf was crying
Crying, "Nobody, nobody, nobody knows
How much I love the maiden as I tear off her clothes"
Crying, "Nobody, nobody knows of my pain
When I see it has risen that full moon again"
When I see that moon moving
Through the clouds in the sky
I get a crazy feeling and I wonder why
Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf
Comes traveling along
He don't even break the branches
Where he's been gone
For the werewolf have pity, not fear, and not hate
Because the werewolf might be someone
That you've known of late
Oh the werewolf, oh the werewolf
Comes traveling along
He don't even crush the leaves
Where he's been gone
I am beyond distraught that armchair boogie was taken off Spotify, it was by far my favourite album 🥲
Biggest loss i spotify history.

Why don't you buy the physical copy instead of whining? You believe you're entitled to it for free?
@@hankworden3850 good lord haha, that's a bit harsh.

I miss my bud Michael Hurley. I guess he's still in Portland. He moved there so long ago. Hey, Michael, wherever you are.

Just found this by chance just now!
awesome!! I heard the cover from Cat Power, but the original is pretty good, too!
地球是一顆孤單的行星 the cat power cover brought me here a few weeks ago. Both are hauntingly great
There's also a good cover by french singer Françoiz Breut.
I didn’t she covered this song!
in my life i've learned that you have to show people, they wont believe you no matter what you say to them.
Coming on October...waiting for the Werewolves!
What a song!!!
Tis the season!
Con esta canción lo conocí.
Qué gran canción. 😭❤️
The Violent Femmes cover is definitely worth a listen too.
Thanks. A first for me. Unfortunately their of by 1/4 after 4 bars.
Unimitble.
Best version but I'm nostalgic about his early version.

I fuckin' love this guy and his music, and much more for him looks a lot like my grandfather
Amazing, immersed lyrics
I've always loved Cat Power's version of this and only just now found out that it's a cover.
Can't wait to see him at Edgefield tonight! Sure hope to get this one live.
Did he play it? How was he?

amazing! we have a werewolf, too in our new filmproject! :)
I always loved this pleasantly quirky song. We need to make it a hit now that the subject is "pop" again. :)
Hank Williams + Townes Van Zandt
Great comparison
Would have to agree!
Exactly!
great stuff
Unfuckingbelieveable.

A Halloween tradtion among us crying werewolves. Eeeeeeee!
(Spends 4:33 minutes fantasizing about being a sad old werewolf who's lived too long.)
nice upload hannah!
Never even knew Cat Powers version was a cover. Doh!! Need to get out more. On a full moon of course....... ;) Boss.
Yes

Nope, violence is never justified, even if you subtly attempt to romanticize it...
Why not?
Mate, it's about a werewolf...

Killer sobgn. Top two.... ever
10 years down the line and im a bit uncertain about the other song. Could have been Greensleves by Odetta. But it never allows coments.
