  • In this episode of the WAVIT podcast recap, we dive into Episode 4, where host Lex Evans interviews Chrissy Sarah, co-host of the WAVIT podcast and a professional at Sony. Chrissy opens up about her inspiring career journey in the AV and IT industry, offering valuable insights into professional growth, self-reflection, and personal evaluation.
A key theme of the episode is Chrissy’s candid discussion about overcoming imposter syndrome, which resonates with many women in professional environments. A study of 4,000 adults found that 53 per cent of women experience feelings of unfounded self-doubt, incompetence, and being underqualified. These feelings, often referred to as imposter syndrome, are most common in the workplace (72 per cent), during education (29 per cent), and even in social settings (29 per cent).
For Chrissy, part of the journey to overcoming these feelings has involved a deep self-evaluation process:
What am I good at? Chrissy writes down things she’s heard others say she does well, using that external feedback to boost self-awareness.
How do I feel about those compliments? She reflects on how she internalizes praise and evaluates where her confidence stands compared to how others view her.
Where do I feel I actually am? Chrissy balances this external feedback with her own perception of her skills, identifying areas for growth while appreciating her strengths.
Soft and hard skills: She highlights both technical skills in AV/IT and essential soft skills like leadership, communication, and adaptability.
Appreciating yourself: Chrissy emphasizes the importance of valuing your own unique skill set and recognizing personal achievements, especially in environments where imposter syndrome is common.
This discussion ties into broader research showing that imposter syndrome symptoms often begin around age 23 for women. In fact, 62 per cent admit that they’ve rarely experienced true confidence throughout their lives. The pressure to “have it all” is a significant trigger for imposter syndrome, affecting one in five women.
Join us as we highlight Chrissy’s self-reflection journey and her advice for building both confidence and competence. This episode is packed with lessons on career development, self-awareness, and overcoming imposter syndrome, particularly for women navigating male-dominated industries.
