I agree with you about how quickly the foam manipulatives get ruined. I use baskets and line the bottom with fun foam to help keep dice quieter. It also helps keep the dice contained. We talk about the expectation that the dice go into the basket when rolled. Placemats help keep the noise down when using the base ten blocks.

I love the idea of baskets lined with fun foam! So smart! I will be making some of those this summer!

I learn something new every time I watch your videos, Susan! I seriously only learned a few years ago that the Base-10 cubes are 1 cm cubed, and therefore the rod is 10 cm long. Great way to expose and compare centimeters to inches. Also in 1st grade, we love dominos for addition and even/odd comparison, and fact family triangles that students can write on and erase for turnaround facts.

Dominoes were on my "long" list!! Love dominoes for sooo many different skills! Fact family triangles are great too!

I love the foam dice but I use them inside a clear plastic container with a lid. They shake the container with the lid on and look inside to see what the die or dice landed on. The dice don't get dirty because they are inside the container. LOVE your videos. Thank you so much for all your great ideas. :)

Ooooh the large magnetic Ten Frames are now on my wishlist! I already have magnetic Base 10 blocks and I love them. I like to buy small metal baking trays at the dollar store so that students can use them as individual mats for magnets. They can also write on them with dry erase markers.

Thank you Susan. I need to check to see if I can get these for next school year. I do not like plastic. It carries much germs.

Funny story - someone once accidently sent me an email that was intended for their friend that said, "Dreadful voice, but she has good ideas!" So thank you for the compliment! I'm a big fan of YOU! 😊

Our math curriculum came with foam dice and the kids have ruined so many even after talking about those "tools expectations." Not a fan of foam!

The shape building set is very fragile. Many pieces broke during small group exploration in kindergarten. Do not recommend.
