    My Dad and I went to see these cars when they arrived at the dealer's near our home. I was in LOVE! They also sold Hillmans and other Rootes group cars. They are still just as gorgeous now.

    By the way the music is by the Los Straitjackets. The Hodaddys do a version of this song, but this particular version is definitely the Los Straitjackets.

    How could he say Stdebaker's engineering was behind everybody else's. The Avanti engineering (as were other Studebakers) was top notch in its day.

    The way I remember it the original Avanti had round headlight bezels, not square, but I could be wrong. I would have liked to know how a blown Avanti drives, and no mention of Raymond Loewy?

      You aren't wrong, the '63 had round headlights, the '64 had square headlights.

      Wayne C I'm not sure that is strictly true though. I think the change may have been somewhat mid year or near but maybe not right at the start of the 64 model year.

    That looks like an R3 engine to me with the carb in the box. The R2's air intake just covered the venturi's of the carb with a blow-off valve on top.

    Studebaker engineers were the "highest paid" in the industry. The cars were always better than average. However, their designs were ahead of the times and from what I understand, they were more upper mid range as far as price brackets were. GM and Ford as well as Chrysler were big on Madison Avenue promotions. Their dealerships were also more dominant in the market. Studebakers were so original that they virtually became specialties on to themselves.

    Bought a used avanti 63 r1 in 1966. main problem was,stop and go traffic would hit 220 on temp gauge.other then that sweet automobile

    I love it that this owner says Studebaker Engineering was past it's prime......sooo many people claim, that these were ahead of thier times......I own an Avanti since 1988 and love this car, but, it's ancient technology, Yes, it had a roll bar, yes it was fiberglass, yes it had disc brakes, but the chassis and engine were old and Studebaker couldn't keep up/

      OsbornTramain. The V8 blocks dates back to 1950. Started life as a 232.6 C.I. Then 259 then 289.
      In 1963 the R-1, R-2, R-3 and R-4 came out. R-1 and R-2 are 289s.
      R-2 was supercharged. R-3 is
      304.5 C.I. with larger valves. A hotter cam. Supercharged With the carburetor in a cast aluminum air box. With dual valve springs and high out put blower pulleys, it was good for 411 H.P. 171mph in a factory stock car.
      The R-4 had 2-4bbl carbs (no supercharger) I still have one of these engines I ran in a 59 Lark gasser. Ran it one season, never got it dialed in. Low 12s. Then I got married. Then kids.
      I have only seen pictures of the
      R-5 duocento. 2-4bbls. and 2- Superchargers.
      If you kept the oil changed these engines could run 300k miles and never replace the timing chain.
      (It had gears).
      Studebaker set 366 land speed records with the Avanti, Hawk and Lark.

      I know the block is an old design but I hear mostly praise for it anyway. I know the old tech is the Lark convertible frame and front suspension but it's funny that nobody seems to complain about Mustang's incorporating Falcon technology to get that car to market faster and let's face it. That's an impressive design for a 1950 V8 to have gears instead of a timing chain.

    Looks like a R3 actually with the carburator totally encased. I thought the r2's just had the scoop on it and lower pressure?

      Owner says its an R2, so apparently someone replaced the R2 carburetor chromed sheet metal cap with a (polished) R3 aluminum carb enclosure. The R3 aluminum enclosure is (or was) available as an aftermarket reproduction. Only 9 R3's were sold before Stude shut down in late 1963, but there were some new R3 engines left over and those were purchased by people and used to replace engines in Avanti's and other cars. The R3 Avanti was the all-time fastest production car to date in 1963, setting a record at Bonneville... newatlas.com/worlds-fastest-production-car-history/46175/

    The owner is wrong about Studebaker's engineering. It was the financial structure, and the labor costs that killed Studebaker.
    The host was way off when he commented on Studebaker's styling. Not only were the cars not "conservative grandma/grandpa cars", just take a look at the entire '53 line-up, and tell me anybody in Detroit had anything even close that looked as modern back then. I'd say they were about 10 years ahead of everyone else.

      I think he was only referencing the most recent Lark models. Both the Hawk GT and Avanti were still in production, but when the Board shut South Bend down in favor of their Canadian plant, the only cars continued were the Lark types. Big mistake. But, in reality they decided then and there to exit the auto business, they just continued until parts ran out basically. The Avanti was extremely advanced, so much so it continued to be produced until 2007. Yes, the underpinnings where off the shelf standard Studebaker, but it would have been financially prohibitive for a company Studebaker's size and condition to design a car from the ground up.

      theamcman1 My opinion is that old proven technology works and many car companies such with it. People criticize the fact that a 289 Stude engine is a big old lump. Yet G.M. did the same in a few cases with Olds and Pontiac. Little things should have been upgraded though. Like I have heard that the Hawks still had the brake master cylinder under the floorboard. Accessed by a trap door or cover.

    Makes me so sick, I looked @ a 1964 in Plant City Florida, 1966 the price tag as I recall was $3500. Should have bought it sorry to say DIDN'T
