Great to hear these performances again_I bought these recordings over 50 years ago when Vasary was becoming well known. His playing was beautiful, clear, poised, and here it is as I remember. A great musician.
With his warmth and beautifully rounded tone, Vasary has no need for lurching rubato, exaggerated dynamics or other expressive devices. He is the only pianist I know apart from Rubinstein in his last set of Nocturnes who builds the great C minor to its natural climax without undue histrionics. Nothing here is bland but everything is musical. Some critics, like David Dubal, say Vasary’s Chopin continued to grow beyond the DG years. I’ve just ordered his BBC Ballades. Meantime, thanks so much for posting.
The Vasary Chopin is really something exquisite. Although think there are better renditions of the Ballad nr 1 than his, the rest is one of the best Chopin one can find, with that of Tatiana Shebanova in what an Intégrale of this composer refers. Vasary is the Winner of both, the Liszt and the Chopin International Piano Awards, and he did not recorded a Chopin Intégrale, but recorded much of it. His Nocturnes, for me, rank among the best, with the jewels the Huangci ones are. In the Vasary renditions, there are also his concerts and his Fantasía Impromptu to be mentioned. Unfortunately, he left the piano playing for conducting, as Eschenbach did. But his Liszt and above anything else, his Chopin, are works that have remained unforgettable. His sensitivity is a remarkable one, and so his playing can be as poetic as you could wish. Vasary is the creator of dreamy atmospheres where to get into. Don't miss Vasary, there's nothing alike. His Schumann Carnaval is also very good. I warmly recommend him. 🎵🎶🆗👍💙
