The Hennessey Helix, ABoK

  • This sinnet has evolved from a recent discussion on The International Guild of Knot Tiers Face Book page. It is a variation on Ashley's #3035. It is such a testament to the beauty of asking questions and seeking answers. Javier Villa posted a question about the #3035 which Peter Hennessey and others tried to answer. Peter tied a few variations on the sinnet and this was one of them. Who knows what's gone before but until we know differently I credit Peter as the first person to tie this. I can say with confidence that Peter has forgotten more about knotting than I'll ever know. I also had a go tieing it and for me this seemed to be a natural way to lay the cords and works particularly well with contrasting colours. The #3035 is tied with 6 strands this has 8. It involves a working set of cords and a spare set of cords. Ashley has both sets traveling in the same direction, in this version the two sets travel in opposite directions. If I tie knots for the rest of my life I'll still die a learner. Javier went on to successfully tie the sinnet so it looks like Ashley's illustration, I still haven't managed that. Always something else to tackle.
    Hope this video is of some use, please let me know. I'd love to see your results.

    All the cord I use in my videos is made by me on my own home made rope walk. I sell cord in a range of colours through my shop, here's the link.

    Hope you find my video useful. If so please consider supporting my endeavours by checking out my store. I have a small selection of hand made hard laid cord for sale. Traditional hard laid cord is perfect for this style of knotting. If you've not used it will change your knotting forever.

    It's always a joy watching your old videos every once in a while. Would love to see some new ones, but it is what it is. Best regards from Germany. 👋🏻

      You are kind thank you hope all is well. No new videos on the horizon. Obsessed with photographing birds now. Maybe I’ll return to knots one-day.

    Lovely video, gonna try this and I appreciate the solution about the parallel development. That's really generous and kind.
    A question. At the start you show a sinnet with 2 versions - what is the upper version?

    • @plemas
      @plemas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mabel, the top sinnet is my attempt to tie it to Ashley's directions. It works as a sinnet but looks nothing like Ashley's finished illustration. Javier managed to get it looking right but I can't seem to.

      Philip Le Masurier thank you, I completely forgot about that part of the conversation on FB. Javier managed with Paracord which is a whole different thing than your beautiful hard laid line. You couldn't probably tie a 1-ply THK (strictly o1 u1) with your cord. But with paracord it is perfectly possible.

    Very good, i like making small key fobs, have you a video, to show the start, after the braid, and also how to finish...

      Hi Alan, I don't have a start to finish one, but I hope to do one when I get some free time. If you piece together a few on my videos all the different steps are covered. Thanks for your interest.

      Actually this one is a start to finish video. It covers how to tie Des Pawson's pyramid key fob. You should look for his book it's a beauty

    I personally think that the version you did on IG would make an excellent stage in a full size bell rope.

      Johnny Debt I’m trying to get my head around using different thickness in a bellrope but in principle I agree with you. Should be fun trying something new.

    Good to see a lot of sold out signs on your selling page. I suppose the down side is that you have to work harder??

    • @plemas
      @plemas  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have been selling quite well but the real reason for the lack of stock is that my real job has been particularly busy. I'm hoping to restock in the next week or so. I have one large order to get done first then back to restocking.. I still get customers saying they heard of me via your review. You have quite a reach and are very well respected, and rightly so.

      The problem with that is, sometimes the odd bit of abuse does rear its head.

    So, finishing the end?

      @plemas  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you look back through my older videos fir the one titled “Globe Knot, Diamond + ABoK #954”. It’s the technique I use for most of my finishes. Good luck

    Beautiful. I'm jealous of the rope. It's definitely not the same look with paracord. :-)

      Just say no to paracord! Just joking, it's very good for parashutes. Easy fix though, just head over to my store. bloodknot.bigcartel.com

      Tana Lee stock is low I admit. 🤔 it’s a side line for me and finding spinning time is often tricky. And when I do get time people just go and buy it, what’s a poor fella to do? 🤷‍♂️

    How do you get from 4 strands to 8?

    • @plemas
      @plemas  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not sure what you mean. The loop is 4 strands but fold it over and you have 8 strands
