- Sins of a Solar Empire 2 reviewed by Will Borger on PC.
In its current state, Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is hard to recommend. On the one hand, it’s clearly not ready for prime time, despite what its Epic Game Store page and post-1.0 version number would want you to believe. It’s buggy, makes no effort to teach you how to use its huge number of very complex systems, its menus are weirdly and counter-intuitively arranged, and there isn’t even a server browser. On the other hand, all of this confusion comes on top of what is a very faithful follow-up to a beloved real-time 4X game, and developer Ironclad Games has added some cool new ideas to it on top of the under-the-hood and graphical improvements. Sins 2 can be pretty fun with a friend once you figure out how most things work and your massive fleet is blowing some poor guy’s home planet to Kingdom Come, but man, does it take a long time to get there. Maybe when it arrives on Steam with the features we’ve been promised, Ironclad will have (ahem) ironed out all these problems and atone for the sin of releasing it prematurely and hoping nobody would notice.

To clear up some confusion, Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is not in early access, and has not had that label on it for some time. The version number we reviewed is 1.21.12. It is not yet on sale on Steam, but it is on the Epic Games Store alongside Fortnite and many other store-exclusive games.

The version you are playing on Epic is a version of the game from a year ago, cant say why they made the version number show that, but all of us who have been playing it epic since day 1, and following the devs on discord understand its intended as the early access version of it, full version releases in Epic and Steam in Q3 2024, and it will be feature complete with all factions.

Also on epic it has said this version number 1 since early 2023. So why review it now?

EGS is basically a beta-testing enviroment for Steam releases nowadays.

All early access tags in the EGS were removed, and the game has a 1.x version number. it is therefore not obvious for potential buyers that the game is unfinished. A review that scrutinizes the game as a full release is absolutely justified...

1 - they are charging money for those who want immediate access to its pre alpha and only a few thousands bought it .
2 - open to criticism yes but read the title of the video ..... its not a " pre alpha review" not a " Beta reviews" , but a full review when the game is only 2/3 complete.
they are literally sabotaging the game by making a review right after the devs announced that the game will release fully with all contents later this year.

Why does the Loyalist does not have Novalith cannon anymore? Is'nt the purpose of the cannon as such to dominate the map of the clear winner? The game will go on longer more than it should without cannons. They can just avoid each other fleet run in circles endlessly, just expand and avoid.

Advent comes with Steam release. In Summer they release a big patch with many changes to current one

Erm...... The IGN what are you on about, The game is still in development. Steam has is listed as a Q3 24 release. The Epic Store version is still a work in progress. Also IGN did you not think something was off when no other video game reviewer has reviewed the game??.... oh wait thats because they know its still in development. Ìmagine a game still being unfinished after it had a long period of Early Access and now claims itself to be a Full Release Version. The only reasons a company does this is to either charge a higher price or sell DLCs. Or to stop developement on a game, because they delivered "the final product". And defending this is just hilarious.

@@immatoll4375 are you new to PC games? There are games out there that have been early access for almost a decade. lol Sins doesn’t come close to that. This review should have been done after the planned release in august. To do a review on a game that isn’t finished that is early access and stated will be a finished build around the corner is misleading. If there next build which they actually claim to be the release build is like this then there will be a leg to stand on. Right now it’s not a review it’s a complaint about something being unfinished when it in fact is unfinished. I’ve seen games full release on version 2 or higher. Version numbers do not equate to full game.

@@kek1247 Utterly IRRELEVANT. The ONLY thing that matters is THE STORE PAGE. The STORE PAGE does NOT state this game is in early access anymore, hence it is a lie. You shouldn't have to go to a fracking discord channel or an outside website to "research" something that 99% of Early access games state on the FRONT PAGE of their store page, you corporate brainwashed muppet.

- Review an unfinished game still in development. Criticise it for lacking content.
- Double down on false claims that the game isn't in early access, despite the game NOT HAVING BEEN FULLY RELEASED and still being in active development. Base your claims entirely on what is clearly an oversight on the game's Steam page.
- Seek no confirmation from the publisher or developers about the game's release status.
- Write a hit piece giving a game months from release a mediocre score.
It's absolutely insane IGN hasn't removed this video yet. This is a gigantic mistake.

Seriously, do you realy consider something a 'finished' product just because it doesn't specifically pushes it into your face, that it is 'early access'? Like clearly half the game content isn't even available in the game yet you are criticizing it like it's a finished product just because it's out in Epic store, that everyone knows to mean nothing.
Having 1.0 version numbers probably means, that in terms of core mechanics, it's finished, but not in terms of content (factions, ships, tooltips, balance, etc.)
And do you ever do your own due diligence in checking the internet before hurling judgements? The CEO literally said they have been out of "early access" since 2023 in their interview with IGN...

Reviewing an Early Access or Beta version of a game is akin to evaluating a meal that's still in the process of cooking. LOL

Yet everyone and their grandma knows that the game isn't done yet.
The reason they had to remove the early access mention is probably so they could put it on Steam earlier due to the EGS exclusivity.
But they've never promoted the game in any sort of way, anyone who buys it now knows that it's still early access. We're not talking about an AAA game that anyone knows about. It's a niche game, you don't accidentally stumble upon it. You have to look for it.

Star Command Revolution was a great game. This is a great game as well, just not finished yet.
