Steve this is very informative. The bad news no one wants to hear but necessary. I have metal bullnose embedded in the concrete. Due to concrete cracks and settling some of the metal joints don't line up for the joint cap to fit properly and seat. The liner still stays in the track. We have a lot of ground water so the liner will float off during the off season. I've learned to check this in off season and pump out behind the liner. At some point Im not sure if I will have to address the bullnose metal coping. If so what do I do?
I am in the process of changing out deck integrated coping that failed. So cutting out cement and adding new coping along with liner. Is there a new coping you would recommend? Or do I still do a deck integrated coping?
Coping is what holds the liner in place with a vinyl pool. You cant change the coping without changing the liner, which means that any deck solutions you look at have to happen without touching the coping or liner - unless you dont mind paying to have those done again.
Hi, I need some help. I have a older in ground pool with what I think is the bull nose copping. It’s getting bad. Is this stuff poured in with the concrete? Can I tear the bad parts out and replace the concrete ?
Exactly what we have and we are going to install a low profile coping this Spring but do not know what kind of screws. Will the companies sell to home owner's?
Could be that you need tapcons, the blue ones, if there is concrete behind the steel at the top of the wall. That makes the installation much more labor intensive because you drill the steel first, the pilot hole masonry bit, then tapcpn with hex head. It's a three drill job and you will sweat it our for sure. If you can use tapcons they go quick and easy.
@@jessicavaccarino6521 I would be pretty apprehensive about a side mount coping on wood walls. That wood at the top of the wall would have to be extremely thick / sound and you would want hardware every 4" around the perimeter. Even still, some sort of top mount coping style would be better for wood construction.
Good video. I have an integrated coping. The deck is failed. Concrete has deteriorated, we are replacing deck only. Liner is 4 years old and bull nose is ok. BUT how difficult is it to replace coping along with deck? I fear damaging the fairly new liner. Options ?
If you replace coping you need a new liner even if it’s new. That was his whole point in making sure your coping is in good shape before going forward with a new liner.
What can I do when the screws/tacks? holding the track to the pool walls snap off? The vinyl liner is pulled about 1 1/2 " away from the wall where the track actually split in half - I so truly appreciate your advice. Thank you
Hello, I have a 36 yr. old vinyl liner pool 18' round with bullnose coping and was just informed by my contractor that it would be best to fill the pool with dirt and close it out because the coping is shot. He indicated that the cost to repair wouldn't be a good return on investment. Would this be your recommendation? Can I buy the coping and do it myself? Thank you!
Liner looks good and is in place...previous owner installed 10 years ago. However, the frame around the pool - which I assume is the coping - is made of some kind of thin metal and looks a little weathered. Are we able to change that out w/out replacing the liner, or should we just bear with it until it’s time to change the liner??? Thanks for this great info!
I have the same exact question. We just bought a house with an amazing inground pool. But the coping metal is rusting in spots and the liner is coming out in areas
Like you want the deep end to be less deep? How much height do you need to lose? Also, I presume you understand this would be completed as a renovation of the pool and liner, not something you can just do to your pool and have it now be shallower...
@@Swimmingpoolsteve yes it's at 6 ft and they want it 4 ft How would I do that? Would get to the 0lumbing of the main drain raise it and fill it with gravel ? Then lay the new concrete over the gravel?
Great video!! I have a question: Could you tell me about the long-term effects of algae, leaves and other organic matter left on the vermiculite underneath a new vinyl pool liner?
You might get some mold growing under there, but for the thousands of vinyl pools I have seen empty this does not seem like much of a concern. More of a concern would be anyone attempting to put a liner over anything other than a pristine clean floor surface.
I was thinking that I can cut the concrete out along the perimeter of the pool about the length of bullnose pavers, replace the old track with new low profile then cement the new bullnose pavers along the edge. What do ya think?
Or you can try to get one more season out of your liner, but then damage your coping track from the strain. Now you need new coping, but if you deck integrated coping, the most popular coping, then you need to re and re the deck. All in, pushing for one more season from your liner turns a $3500 job into a $25,000 job.
Excellent video, totally explains everything to the novice pool owner. Thank you.

Could the style of coping be changed from pvc bullnose to something better and more cost-effective then redoing a good portion of your concrete deck?
I had a 10X24 vinyl salt water pool install last summer. I need to get the patio done this year. I am unsure what kind of coping is recommended.

Yes they will, and usually galvanized steel self tapping tech screws. Use one every 6" around the pool.

I would try painting the coping carefully in the spots that are the eye sore.
@@stizzack Is the liner coming out of the coping because the liner is old and hard. The liner may need to be replaced and not the coping.
Thank you. How can you actually see if the coping is failed if a few spots are comming down.
Is the liner slipping out of the coping track (easy fix) or is the liner still in the track, but the coping is pulling off of the wall (hard fix)

lot of good info...some actual visuals might have been nice.
Good advice. For a video, it really needs either graphic depictions or physical illustrations. Too abstract here.
