what's up guys.
y'all asked for it, so I'm delivering. This is an in depth guide on how to install coping around your swimming pool.
whether you are installing on a gunite fiberglass or a vinyl liner, it's the exact same. There are some little details that change depending on the pool type, but you get the point.
If you are a service company in landscaping or construction and are looking for someone to train you and your team HOW TO BUILD $100k-$1M Dollar SWIMMING POOL Projects send me an email at JonathanPortukalian@gmail.com

We are installing hart stone coping made right here in Louisville Kentucky.
I cover all the details on material tools layout and install, so enjoy the video Like and subscribe.
"doing this with a 14" is basically impossible"
Haha, said to a person whose boss is too cheap to have multiple stone saw blades at once... I've done 45s for a decade with a big ass quick cut! The idea that a smaller saw would be easier actually blew my mind and will definitely be the way I go on this next project
Haha. I have a big 14 inch. It does make it more difficult. I’m not very good on the 14 inch to be honest. I haven’t used it that much that small saw is awesome and it works so well.
What type of caulk did you use on this project?
All purpose silicone
Hi Jonathan
Thank you for the wonderful video. I am trying to lay travertine pavers. Do I need to leave a gap between the pool coping ?
@@chandikawijesinghe5872 if you want to grout the joints yes. Id recommend 1/4-3/8s
Thanks for the great tips 👍🏼
anytime
I assumed the joints on the coping were epoxy filled like a countertop seam.. another question if the Client wants a baja shelf/sun shelf whats the pool material choice for the that 6 inch bottom. Chair legs could be an issue
You could epoxy them but i left them open. This is a fiberglass shell so for the sun shelf they have chairs that work and wont damage. Is that what you meant?
@@jonport_ Correct, So a vinyl pool liner type system is a no no for a sun shelf. I’m not to familiar with Fiberglass pools.
In our climate, with 4 season temp changes from -20 to plus 30
@BZ1340 no not at all. We do sun shelfs all the time with vinyl Liner
@@BZ1340a thicker mm liner shouldn’t have an issue. The chairs that you put on tanning shelves are made specifically for tanning shelves. They’ve got a flat bottom and can be filled with water to weigh it down. If you were to just put a patio chair on it with legs, then you may run into a problem
Seems like if you set strings to the backside of the coping it would be more accurate to line up (with the sharp edge) and less in the way of where you are working.
My pool needs new coping, watching your video reminds me to get the professionals in and not try it myself. It sounds easy enough, just laying out but getting those cuts perfect so that it looks good is a skill that is learnt over many jobs. Just want to mention one thing - if there is any silica or similar in the air when you are power cutting then a mask is a must. Silica is the new asbestos.
Right on brother I’m glad it helped you. Thanks for the mask tip👊🏻
Good to know all this
I have a few loose coping tiles. Pulled them up and ground off thin set from backs. Beams are in pretty good shape. Can I just lay them back using an even layer of thin set or do you recommend something different?
Thats what i would do. Anything else would be really extensive
Something gives me a bad feeling about this video
@@JT-jg8le whys that?
Can you list the material and from where as far as putting the coping back on after it falls off!
@@lascellespowelljr.1109 a simple way would just get a Landscapeing adhesive for stonework. Other than that, you’d have to pull the stone up and grind it down and reset it. You would need an angle grinder with a concrete bit blade, concrete, chisel, mason trowels hammer level, and mortar.
Would you do the same process Koko radio weather?
How much u charge for coping i get new to business and I don’t know how much i should charge for it if you can help me with some informations
Sure. We charge around 3k for labour plus material. Depends on the size of pool.
Hi, useful videos thanks. Dilly question but do you put any grout in the joints?
@@corriephillips3866 not on this one. Sometime we will put a 1/4in gap for grout. Depends on the job
Great video. Would you pour concrete first and then to the coping/tiling on pool (pool slightly raised) or the other way around? Thanks!
No i don’t. I want the coping flush with the concrete.
Can you elaborate on how you decide on a vinyl liner pool VS fiberglass? Do you give customers the option? Is the cost to the customer comparable? Which option makes you more profit as a business? Are there a lot of gunite pool builders you compete against?
We do fiberglass mainly because that’s what the customers want. The price is the same as vinyl, and we do make more money on the fiberglass because we can install them faster.
Just lay the stone already
🤷♂️ haha
Very good info thanks u helped alot
@@SusanMartell-l9l awesome! Thank you for watching.
Once the coping is in place and set up, do you go back and pack grout / mortar on the underside between the bottom of the paver overhang and the top of the pool wall (this is on the inside - water side - of the pool)? If not, do you fill this with silicone?
Ideally the silicone will seal it up when you first install it. I don’t go back with anything. You could
@@jonport_ Thank you very much for such a quick response!
@@arthursnyder2178 yes sir! Your welcome
Awesome man. Thanks for sharing
🙏🏻🙏🏻
Do you seal the coping?
I will if they pay for it. It definitely needs it
Colorado weather
I would. I would make sure you go a little extra thick on the mortar. So 1/2-5/8.
@@jonport_ thank you
@@wmlanderos1806 you are welcome
You would not know a good contractor in Denver area? It is hard to find people that want to work
@@wmlanderos1806 sorry. I do not
Does this application require anything to be put into the joints of the coping? Polysand/mortar? Or does it not need it?
Not at all. I feel like its less maintenance when you but them close and it look really good. You do end up with about a 1/32 to 1/16 gaps sometimes depending on the stones which look perfectly fine in my opinion.
Really great content!!
You are right by saying you are not the fastest
I try to be honest
