Hey! Chilean here! I survived a 8.5 earthquake and I tell you: after the earthquake you will be very disoriented. Go to you car, grab the little fire extinguisher to be ready for any fire that may occur (unlikely) and listen to the radio. Don't turn the engine on, just the radio. They will tell you what to do, and most importantly, they will tell you where the epicenter was, and list the casualties and missing people. Don't go inside and keep your family near the car and wait for the "Replicas" that WILL occur in the span of the next 5 hours. To calm kids down the next day you can go to your local store and ask for ice cream, they usually give it away bc the power is off and it will melt soon. Good luck!

@@zp4805 Here in Chile is the law. You have to keep in your car a little fire extinguisher, a basic first aid kit, an spare tire and the basic tool kit to change it. Oh, and a little refletive jacket, so if you need to make any repair to your car on the road, other drivers can see you.

@@Arterismos nah i'm australian and we very rarely have them bc we're the oldest continent, so we're not tectonically active at all. so yeah we don't get earthquakes for the same reason we don't have like, any active volcanoes or like, a significantly tall mountain - the land is just too old for it. i've been to japan a few times tho and the small quakes there and like just the presence of volcanoes scared the fuck out of me

I’m from Chile, we have earthquakes all the time and nothing happens we don’t care. Just glasses shatter and bruh. Like structures are really secure for nothing to happen. Literally I’ve been in 2 major earthquakes in the last decade. One was 8.9 and one was 8.4 but we have all the time really little mint earthquakes in which ai just stand up and say to my brothers there’s an earthquake.

@@Soychan1993 My dads side of the family survived hurricane Tracy by huddling inside of a bathtub! They put a mattress on the top but it was pretty sturdy and it was the only room in the whole house that actually survived! The bathtub is usually made out of sturdier foundation and is pretty intact with the floor so it doesn't collide or break off.
We were in an earthquake once at our condo unit (we live in the Philippines) , and we didn't have a bathtub. I just cried (the earthquake wasn't that hard) I was panicking and took everything I can in my backpack. Then we were told to go down the stairs to the evacuation area (we were at the 6th floor)

I remember I went to Guatemala to visit my moms side of the family and it was my first crazy earthquake. Me and my cousin were on the bed and I felt it shaking. It old her “stop moving the bed😒” and she said, “I’m not moving anything though?” And then we stared at each other for 5 seconds before my older cousin burst in the door and screamed “THERE’S AN EARTHQUAKE” he grabbed us and showed us under the tables. (Just an fyi this all happened in Spanish)

That’s so interesting lol in the US it’s usually English and Spanish, and the only products that have French are usually salon products and ~fancy~ things
it makes sense bc they’re not in canada & french isn’t one of our majority languages so it is out of place to randomly see french on things.
I live in UT and recently we had an earthquake, I was in the shower... you don’t know what real fear is until you are in the shower halfway through shampoo and the ground starts shaking

No, I think it’s okay. It’s actually part of our protocol in my family for tornadoes. Now that I’m in an apartment, I don’t have really good interior walls with no windows, or closets with enough room, and my bathroom is the best option. I do have a sliding glass door instead of a curtain (they always get stuck to me and the sensation is creepy as hell), but I keep them doubled up at the far end. I have tons of water in the room, I have my cat’s box and food, and I can put some of everything at the far end of the tub. I always have a spare puffy comforter in the closet I can grab and take with me, and it goes over me and Arwen.
Before we moved here, my brother was in a tornado. It went right overhead. He said it sounded like a train and an animal, snarling kind of. He was on the phone with my mom some of the time. He was so so scared. The university less than half a mile away had a dorm ruined, the wall peeled off like a sardine Can lid. No one died, that time, but within ten years of that tornado, parts of the campus had to be rebuilt three times. The house on the opposite side of the street from us had major damage once too, but our side was fine. It’s eerie how precise they are.
That’s part of why earthquakes can be so much worse than tornadoes, I guess. They are more efficient at killing things in their path, but there’s more warning and it’s more isolated. But with earthquakes, the red zone is so much bigger, and the aftermath is worse.
It isn't the worst idea, but not the best either. It is all a matter of what is around you and how bad the earthquake is. It might be bad enough that you can barely move, leading to a priority of faster safety over better safety.

I live in Colorado and boy can I tell you that if the "big one" happens in California half the country could be affected by it. Why? The supervolcano in Yellowstone Wyoming would be triggered by all the shaking, even from so far away. The entire west half of the U.S. would be covered in ash and I'm close enough to it that I would die. Fun fun lol

I’m ridiculously prepared for everything. Wherever I go, grocery store or restaurant, I’m always aware of the best safety measures. Tornadoes to hurricanes to blizzards, earthquakes, floods, my family will always be safe with me around!

Hufflepunk I live in the Midwest and have never heard of that😂😂 We’re told to 1) stay away from windows and doors 2) go a basement if you have one 3) get into a ball and put your hands over your head 4) if you’re outside just lay on the group being as small as you can. Yeah that’s pretty much it. It’s common sense honestly

I am from South America and here all of our houses are made from metal, cement and brick so here the safest place are columns. Under desks and tables now it is not considered safe here. The worst place to be during an earthquake is in the bath. My neighbor had to run outside in nothing but a towel so we ended up getting a bed sheet for her from some poor old guys house that completely collapsed (he’s fine! He fortunately wasn’t in his house during the earthquake)
