There was 2 of them though. One upstairs in the sales office (as seen in the video) and another one at the bottom of the stairs of the entrance to the programming department in the 'dungeons'.
Had an awesome Street Hawk wind up toy (al la the Evel Knievel classic toy) that I got as a present that came with an audio cassette story which I think I still have somewhere. Used to listen to it via my Speccy.
Haha.. Love the song. Never played this but wouldn't want to either.. Moped Turkey. Sounds interesting ;) On the Ocean front though, I do remember some of the games with fondness, but if they were seriously relying on spotty teenage freelancers to do their games, I am shocked they lasted as long as they did. Again, another brilliant delve into the surreal Spectrum software scene. Brilliant! Cheers!
Thank you for helping to dispel the MYTH that this is the 'Crash Subscriber's Edition'. I've been saying for years that Crash never sent it out and it's obvious they didn't due to the letter sent out by them asking subscriber's to choose another game! It's the Kay's Catalogue Edition' :)
At least Spectrum users got Street Hawk. C64 owners didn't get any version, and it took years before the Martin Galway music was archived from his own source disks. There is in fact two renditions: a more straight cover, which would have been used in the first version, and then the extended version where Galway added bits to the start and end. Both are well worth a listen and can be listened via DeepSID online the easy way. The first Spectrum version was definitely more a fulfilment exercise to avoid financial penalties with the full version later on, which at least was ambitious(ish) with that top down setting made popular by a certain driving game series.
It's weird how the TV shows that you watched as a kid seemed to go on for _years_ - and then you look 'em up on the internet and find there were only enough episodes to fill a quarter of one year. The Planet of the Apes TV series? 14 episodes. The Logan's Run TV series? 14 episodes. The Man from Atantis? 13 episodes. Time speeds up as you get older, so I suppose the inverse was also true.
Loved Street Hawk on the TV. There was a novel based on the first episode which I read. Even had the theme tune as my ringtone. My dad was in the Army so we lived in Germany. My mum had Kays catalogue to order our clothes and birthdays and Christmas presents. Mmmmm Bras, sorry lost myself there 😊
Haha thanks! Sadly not me, I'd love to be in a 80s style band. It's a site called www.udio.com/ check it out, it's great fun for mucking about and free for little jingle type stuff.
Interesting historical excursion. Thank you. I had no chance of watching any of the mentioned tv shows due to iron curtain, but there were others pretty much the same))) Seems like OCEAN missed plenty of chances to became far more superior company, well, cant blame the guys who became rich in no time for being too careless.
@@SebsPlaceYT by the way, they could make a good trick even with these two humble types of gameplay. Apart from speeding up the whole thing, they could introduce time race, collecting coins/fuel/ammo, following and attacking armored car in Chase HQ style (same npc car sprite but of different color with terrible clashing as always:)) The best choice would be to go with Deathchase clone!
Gary Bracey was not a "Company Director" at Ocean Software. He was VP of Development. You also showed Jonathan Joffa Smith while talking about freelance programmers. Joffa worked in-house as an employee of Ocean.
I do enjoy the fact you turn up every now again just to pick holes Simon..... VP or director.... same bloody difference, and yes I'm fully aware that is Joffa. Didn't have much footage to use of 80s teenage freelance programmers. It's fairly obvious it's the same Ocean footage throughout.
The vertically scrolling version I remember enjoying as a kid, though to be honest I can't remember that other part which suggests I didn't play it that much!
All of my fave shows got cancelled early. I preferred Blue Thunder to Airwolf, it was gone after 11 episodes, although in retrospect, my memories were coloured by the infinitely better feature film. I've revisited Street Hawk since, which got to 13 episodes before cancellation, but I can still watch it. I like the character dynamic, the bike is cool, and the stories are interesting. It had some decent production value too, getting Christopher Lloyd to play the bad guy in the pilot, and with an early appearance for George Clooney. But when it came to super powered road vehicles, Knight Rider had the crown, and made it to 4 seasons. I've tried rewatching that, and it's so cheesy that it makes my teeth itch. Besides, a Tangerine Dream theme tune will win my heart every time.
Yeah I agree with you. I watched some episodes whilst doing the video and I did enjoy them. Apparently George Clooney was considered for the lead role!
@@SebsPlaceYT Brill, I checked on Google, Raleigh Vektar (I remembered 2 different specifications/models) can only see this option, "surprised" 😉 you were not familiar. Correct me if I'm wrong, possible tie in to make money from "Street Hawk", TV series?
Men of Culture preferred the Great Universal Spring/Summer catalogue. Lingerie AND swimwear. I had the released version on some sort of compilation. It was fun jumping and using the turbo.... and then you ran out of turbo and didn't get any more. Just like being middle-aged really.
How dare you, never once I've looked at the lingerie section in Kay's catalogue, well not once anyway 😂 Yeah both are extremely poor, shame they didn't make more of the Defender type game. I remember once upon a time when a computer shop I used to go in Walsall would have tv's hanging down suspended from the ceiling showing the latest game trailers, Street Hawk was one of them. I swear the background music was from the C64 playing during the trailer but different to Martin Galway's version on the internet. I still remember this memory vividly. The trailer was from the second version of the game. Would love to track these down if they exist. Great subject again mate 👍
Blue Thunder the movie was excellent.. the tv show yeah not so much...Airwolf started decent but soon fell to bits..Knight Rider remains a classic that legit works on multiple levels as a good action show for kids but at the same time as a goofy, but intentionally funny, show for the adults. Street Hawk was solid if unremarkable but I liked it and never figured out why it got axed after one season though... 2 games and BOTH were bloody awful (thank **** I never paid cash for either, both were on a "completely legitimate compilation tape" (TM). Pre-Platoon Ocean made a lot of howlers with licenses
Not a great game, either of them but at least you got two games on the Spectrum. For the C64 you get exactly nothing it seems. Although, yeah, you could just play Defender or Action Fighter instead I guess. The original song made it all worth it though! Wonder how you created it? Have yet to see Street Hawk myself but was planning on doing so at some point actually.
Hello! Before you go, I'm curious... whilst I agree with your sentiment in the mainstream use of the technology, how does Moped Hawk (tasty as guacamole) disadvantage anyone? Other than hurting their ears, maybe?
The bike just turns into a clown's face every time it jumps!
Look, and now you can't un-see it :D
Ha! Someone else said they see Pennywise every time!
Love the musical interlude.
Thank you!

The history was fascinating and I adore the Moped Hawk song XD

Great video, really interesting to hear the story of this one. And your knowing pause at the mention of the lingerie section made me laugh 😄👍🏻

The best bit of Street Hawk was when it was doing apparantly 90mph down some American street.. and you could see pedestrians going about 50mph lol
