    It's amazing to think that today, Feb 10, 2022, we still have living among us one of the greatest jazz musicians of all time. My God - what a fantastic person to interview!

    Sonny's analysis of the drug/artist situation was quite honest and accurate.He is such a giant influence and talent,and,at the same time,such a wonderful,humble,humorous man. Great job!!

    man, I love this youtube channel. You've got GREAT taste in your interviewers. I bet if Duke rose from the dead despite the years passed since his popularity you'd interview him and educate ppl on WHO IS WHO

    It's funny how our(lovers of jazz) heroes like Sonny Rollins and other jazz musicians are very accessible. There won't be heavy security or anything ridiculous like that and you have good chances of having a little chat with them at some point in time..... Whereas being a fan of a pop star....chances are you'll never get to meet them, much less chat with them.

    • @WRyanUSA
      @WRyanUSA 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is rather ironic because they have much more to teach which should make them more profitable!

  • @TheAndrewGorny
    @TheAndrewGorny 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    and in almost every case they are light years ahead of their pop equivalents.

    It's certainly not popular, but if you ask me, jazz is thee art form. Everyone improvises trough the whole song, everyone expresses their feelings and thoughts in a package of sweet rhythm and musical complexity that you really can get lost in, it's just fantastic

    God bless you Sonny. I last saw you for the last time in the early 90's. One of the nicest men in the whole music industry. I was so happy to find out of your friendship with my favorite pop/R&B artist, Donald Fagen of Steely Dan, and how he always calls you and sees if you ever need anything. Donald staged a benefit for Sonny who he identified as his all time favorite musician. I still LOVE how on Donald's first solo album "The Nightfly" there is a pic of the highly underrated record "Sonny Rollins and the Contemporary Leaders." Sonny was the guy who really got me into jazz. It was complex, individual jazz, but somehow accessible to a young person coming into the jazz world. Whenever I see a musically interested kid, I always introduce them to Sonny first.

    Good interviewer. Sonny has been the soundtrack of my life and my own attempts at music. There is no greater improviser, and with his words, provides a spiritual map for an improvising musician. His music is so fresh, visionary and energetic, his sense of time so revolutionary, his harmonic senses so unexpected and so beautiful. Years ago when I was hearing Sonny live in LA, he played so much I had to go in the rest room and just scream. Thanks Sonny !

    I liked your questions and not reacting to his comments about altered states and creativity as being politically incorrect. i know Dizzy Gillespie liked his cannabis as did Louis Armstrong and they were no worse for wear.

    When this aired, I don't remember the little story about W.E.B. Du Bois being a part of the broadcast. Pity Jian didn't ask a follow-up question, because it's amazing to think Sonny actually knew Du Bois (one of the most important intellectuals of the early 20th century) personally.
