I'm loving the project so far man! How about doing an oil catch can instead of the breather hose? I know we don't have DI motors, but it will still catch gunk!
Very informative video. Always nice to know exactly whats involved along with the bolts that might break and hoses that might be cracked. Enjoyed. Look forward to your tune selection. I've been debating upgrading my turbo since early last year and still on the fence with this one.
If you don't already have an HP Tuners program, if say get it. You can get full information about your engine, and send it off to tuners to get a tune custom made for your car. I'd recommend Vermont Tuner, as Brian is just a charm to work with.
Nice upgrade, just put some silicone hose temporary to there (using the original 2 connectors both end), did that on mine when broke, did a job well until new arrived. Stay safe 👍
You beat me to this video, my turbo got delayed because of COVID. Was gonna make this exact video on my 06 Aero with a 19T off a Caddy SRX because there wasnt one out there yet. Fair play man, love your content. At least I can use this as a guide when my turbo gets here tomorrow. In terms of that breather hose, just get a catch can, that's where it needs to be run anyway. In from crankcase, out to turbo. It uses 7/16ths line from the PCV valve to the turbo, so get a catch can with either 7/16ths or 1/2 inch inlet/outlet. If you need further help with the catch can you can find my posts on The 2.8 Alliance or you can message me on insta @fat_jag. Catch can prevents oil from passing back into your intake, causing buildup and ruining that new do88 intercooler.
FYI, my dad has an ‘09 Aero X with a Vermont Tuning Stage 2 (that’s the 20T tune)... I really don’t like it. VTuner tunes it to hit boost at 4500 RPM so it only makes good power from then until redline. As a result it’s not all that fun to drive, it’s more or less a numbers car. If I were you I’d get it dyno tuned and shoot for a more conservative peak hp number for a more fun linear power band... you don’t seem super concerned about hp bragging rights anyway. And where do you get higher flow injectors? I wouldn’t expect to be able to find any other than the stock ones on eEuro and ESaab.
Ryan Nylander Thank you! Just for clarification, it feels strong under hard acceleration, I just can’t stand how late it’s tuned to hit boost. It’s a solid tune and I get that he delays boost to spare the connecting rods, but I’d bet they could safely be put under boost much sooner, say, at 3000 RPM. Not trying to say it’s a bad tune, just not my cup of tea. :)
@@patrickbeggan1100 yeah, having it come on too late to the game kind of ruins the point of an upgrade. Like you said, phase it in a bit earlier and make a bit more power sooner. I'm sure traction can be an issue on fwd's, so that also might be some of his thinking in having it come on late. Maybe he has a revision for your dad's car, tune wise?
Ryan Nylander Well my dad’s is an Aero X, so it has cross wheel drive and a rear ELSD just like the Turbo X... the two models are very similar. I’ve got a 2007 Aero, which is the last year before they upgrade to AWD with the 2.8Ts. I’m almost positive it’s tuned like that solely for reliably reasons- Mr. VTuner doesn’t want to risk getting a bad wrap ‘cause a couple cars have blown up at full boost.
@@patrickbeggan1100 yeah, he's def on the side of caution vs some of the tuners out there, for sure. Hey, you can always have him get a diff tune from one of the swedes or another stateside tuner and compare. Yes, it's money, but might be able to tap into more power and driveability at lower RPM levels. I'm on a fwd '08... I was nervous about drivetrain issues on the AWD with more power, so skipped.
I had installed in my 2001 9-5 Aero the TD04HL-19T as the original Garrett TD04HL-18T finally ended its life cycle at 117+ k miles... Deciding whether I what to MAPTUN stages or not maybe just the software upgrade?
Wait did you pre-lube the the oil port with least 2 oz. of oil? That is important to do as you don't want to run it w/o any oil in the turbo first off as the oil lines will feed into the the turbo as you know but to dry run the turbo can cause damage unless your friend had already put some oil in before shipping it to you but it may be light oil so I would of add an oz. if he had did that?
@@rao-foto There's an even easier method: hold the gas pedal floored while turning the key to start. This is a diagnostic procedure that cuts the fuel injectors so it simply cranks without starting.
Do you have a part # for the 3 bolts that broke when removing the wastegate? I can't seem to find them anywhere other than purchasing an entire new wastegate. Thank you.
Go Vtuner you will not regret it, safe and reliable. That or Maptun which you already have I think or even Aura tuning which is a newer tuner in I think the UK. They've specialized in custom tuning for the 9-3ng check out their facebook page (with lots of customer car photos and tunings they've done from normal mpg tunes to GT30 turbo tunes) more info. There's a guy on youtube, Saabmadman with their tuning and he even added a meth and water kit to his car and tracks it. He did few vids going against a turbo x which he pulled on because I assume less drivetrain losses from his FWD even though both had similar tuning. Could also be due to his meth and water addon but I'm rambling on lol Anyways great video, stay safe!
Hey there! Quick question, you might know. I have a 2007 Saab 9-3 2.0t which has the low pressure turbo. Can I swap that turbo with a high pressure turbo from Saab 9-3 2.0T and just use the MaptuneX to remap the ECU?
