  • In 1991, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad described his Vision 2020, or Wawasan 2020, of a fully-developed and united nation. But today, racial divisions seem to have deepened with communal politics and entrenched affirmative action based on race. Is the dream of a 'bangsa Malaysia' or one Malaysian race still possible? Insight talks to former Minister Rais Yatim, Deputy Minister Hannah Yeoh, and economic adviser Dr Muhammed Abdul Khalid, among others.
The programme Insight investigates and analyses topical issues that impact Asia and the rest of the world. Watch the full episode here: cna.asia/2Pdpg6f

I remembered when i was 11, a 10 year old girl just attacked me because i was iban (note that the iban race is from Kuching, Sarawak and it was in malaysia) when i told her i was not muslim she literally shouted racial slur's like "go eat pig and go to hell!" and then she attempted to assault me and and she missed then, she shouted "go back to your country" when i told her that sarawak is in malaysia and said she's a dumbass for not knowing it she literally screamed to the point where everyone from 6 floor to the floor im in (floor 1) can hear it then, she accused me of sexual harassment with no proof at all. unfortunately because she's a girl everyone believed her thus, making everyone in the neighbourhood hating me and the only person i know that believed me that i was telling the truth was my parent's because they were in the parking lot at the time and could heard her screaming racial slurs from the place im at to the parking lot, and we had to move out from the place i used to live at and forget about it.

The thing with Singapore is everybody use their official language which is English, eventhought majority Singapore is Chinese but they most of the time speak ENGLISHH, Malay Singapore also speak ENGLISH soo everybody basically really live as one country.. same with Chinese that live in Indonesia!!
Just use the mother tongue language at home with family, no problem with thatt
but sadly in Malaysia, the official language is MALAY, and Chinese doesn't even use the Malay language as often, just use when it needed, if we go dig more and more, it'll be more and more clear of why the racism never ended in Malaysia. It's obvious really. See, most chinese doesn't want to become friend with Malay, and prefer to go to SJK school. Live in majority Chinese neighborhood, create there own only Chinese community very2 often, and speaking about racism, Chinese also very racist to we Indian. How can chinese said they being discriminated while chinese also discriminate others. Chinese also watching they own Chinese TV channel, they don't even know the famous mainstream Malay artist. And Malay also doesn't even know the famous Chinese Malaysian artist since they always perform in Chinese😧like whatt?? Do you ever see something like this in other country?? Did you see what happen there? Imagine an African-American do all those thing in USA, racism might never ended and just go through the roof. Basically Chinese Malaysian lived in another country but in the same land. I hope Chinese realize that they are the one that set themself apart. How can we love each others without knowing each others???

This is why Indonesia will always have problem of malaysia claiming culture. Malaysian politics cannot comprehend cultural differences of a javanese, bugis, minang, or other groups. They claimed all of them (including their different cultural heritage) as ‘malay’. Stop propagating outdated racial classification of ‘Malay race’ and start thinking past ‘racial politics.’ Recognize differences in ‘malay’, Indonesia do not have racial base party, it is possible.

    • @abcddef2112

@Mamat Well simple what groups are they according to malaysian government? Im pretty sure there was a malaysian model usinf the kuda kepang ispired costume so somebody wants to wear that and represent malaysia internationally.
Why miss grand malaysia do not use chinese or indian costumes too because they represent malaysian no?

    • @abcddef2112
      @abcddef2112 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@Mamat Im illustrating a point that ‘racial identity’ is formed and defined by the government.
‘malay race’ was created by malaysian government. Its a legacy of british colonialism, and its so pervasive and deeply rooted that even you have this worldview. The nationality is a ‘supra-ethnic’ one based on this ‘malay’ identity. This is of course in opposition to the ‘other’ identity in the form of ‘chinese’ and ‘indian’.
Of course it would clash with Indonesian conception of identity, race was almost never used or defined. The ‘ethnic’ identity is more clearly marked. A minang cultural tradition is different than a malay cultural tradition and different than javanese traditions. Etc.
USA is also a former colonial society and have a legacy of british racism too though a bit earlier. In particular the creation of ‘white’ identity in opposition to a ‘black’ identity. This is because of slavery history.

    • @abcddef2112

@Mamat 1st to be perfectly clear tionghoa is not strictly ‘chinese’, it is a combination of peranakan and totoks. They have their own culture separate from chinese china. Peranakan and totok have different cultures too.
      2. Both dayak and tionghoa are self designated identity. Its a formed identity defined by themselves, not by government. They want to be known as such which is not so different with many groups from the 1928 youth pledge meeting.
For dayak you should read the history of Oevang Oeray and his efforts. His and I argue Tjilik Riwut too to create a unified dayak identity. For chinese its the effort of Liem Koan Hien and people from the newspaper sin po (here you would also meet abdurrahman Baswedan who create a similar movement in arab-indonesian society). Of course then ethnic parties are banned and they strictly become social associations.
Even then they do separate each groups, singkawang is more likely to be hakka(khek is their word). Medanese are more likely to be hokkien. While javanese groups would be very different as most identify as peranakan. Pekanbaru chinese would identify as hainan. Pontianak chinese would identify more as teochew. Even tangerang have separate identity called ‘cina benteng’. Each of them also have their own traditions and wont claim each others as its different.
For completenese sake in sub-ethnic level even javanese in Banyuwangi would not claim tradition of reog (barongan in malaysia) as its Ponorogo tradition will always be referred as such.
Btw indonesian census do separate each dayak toward their specific tribes too. (If a group of people want to create a separate identity they actually can, This btw happens manytime, betawi, banjar, cirebonese, bantenis)
The most recent census includes cirebon as a separate identity which used to be under javanese etc. Earlier, Bantenis also separate frm sundanese. Kutai and Banjar separates themselves from Dayak.

Not really impossible. Our issue - starts with education. SK, SJK, SMJK ans SMK are all not good environments. It may come as a surprise but students who go to SK/SJK and SMK/SMJK are still pretty racialistic.
I compared this to me and my friends who studied in international schools. We did not see race, religion or language as barriers because we all learnt English, Malay, Mandarin and tiny bits of Tamil. And the writing - Traditional Chinese, Tulisan Jawi as well.
Once we got to college we could see the SMK/SMJK graduates only wanting to hang out with their own race or religion. While we... didn’t care because we respect each other’s differences and look at our similarities like hobbies, interests... etc.

Looking through the comments below, when talking about the concept of 'One Malaysia', the only provoking issue talked about is the 'vernacular' schools - why? How did it affect the unity of the country? Vernacular schools have the same syllabus as the national schools, same aspiration, similar goals that's to produce good citizen to the country. The only difference is, vernacular schools are doing it either in Chinese or Tamil language, only the language is different, so, what's the problem guys? Moreover, I have been a teacher before in national schools and I know how the Chinese and Indian students are treated when come to selection for scholarships, taking part in sponsored competitions, i.e., school debates, sports, etc., One or next to none will be selected even though the Chinese or Indian students fulfil the requirements - open discrimination which still exist but no one question it or talk about? Why? So, what's wrong with the parents sending their children to schools which will see children as children and not as Chinese or Indian? 'One Malaysia' is easily achievable by simply instilling HUMANITY than race or religion! I'm proud to say I've left the ministry because it was against my principle to watch and see students from the minority suffer due to the discrimination, which was disgusting - I have left the country for good! Good luck, Malaysia!!!

Obviously there will be no such thing as malaysia race since we all have different genetic and physical features and that is okay because diversity in physical features and culture is what make us unique. The term "race" that we used to divide malaysian is actually about social construct or class status. Malay class refer to Austronesian speaker who are Muslim, Dayak class refer to Austronesian speaker who are not Muslim in Sarawak, orang asli refer to primitive pagan in peninsular, India class for anyone who have ancestor from south Asia, and so on. If a person who are "Malay race" but convert to other religions, he will lose his Malay status class and become raceless. The government decided what race are u, not yourself. This " race " system was created by the British and continue by our government till this day. Instead of fighting on creating one race like what Nazi German try to do before, we should fighting on one Malaysia nationalism which obviously we lack of that. Nationalism is needed for country creation as it unite people from different race, ethnicity, religion etc. U can't have malaysia nationalism when the government still practicing bumiputra privilege and view Chinese, Indian and peranakan as immigrants eventhough some of them have been here for more then 400 years and we can't have malaysia nationalism when we still have secular school that still glorified their ancestors nationalistic and refused to speak national language. Both side need to trust and work with each other. We are far more behind compare to neighbors country on achieving nationalism.

I tried to do some analysis on the relationship of people in malaysia with data from twitter. Well, the relationship is getting more and more worse. People from different race keep claiming that it's the fault of the other race that cause them to become racist. They claim that it's not their intention to be a racist and yet they are behaving as a racist. This is really chaotic..

Yeah I have to say that Malaysia lacks the sense of unity in a way a certain group of race is enjoying privileges in the most basic need of the people like education. I also find it strange that some of the Chinese Malaysians cannot speak Malay proficiently- which I assume is the national language. Maybe if vernacular schools are closed and more focus is given to using Malay in every aspects of life from homes to businesses, I think it will help promote the expression of the same, united national identity. In Indonesia, there are still divisions between the Chinese and the native Indonesians in terms of wealth but the enforced assimilation policies have made the Chinese see themselves as Indonesians not as Indonesian-Chinese. There is also freedom of religion in Indonesia that allows the Chinese to convert to Islam, or a Javanese to convert to Christianity and I also found that this is not possible in Malaysia. All across Indonesia, all religious processions, books and the media are available in the national language, unlike in Malaysia where I can't even find church services in Malay??? Logically, people are more connected if they can speak the same language.

That is also the root of the culture claim problem malaysian having with indonesians. They just can’t comprehend the problem Indonesians had with their culture claims. Malaysian state do not differentiate a Javanese from a Minang for example both classified as ‘Malay’. As a result Malaysia must claim both cultural traditions of both these groups as cultural heritage of ‘malay’. In Indonesia a Sundanese will never claim cultural traditions of Javanese from the fact they both originated in Java. They can perform them but never claim it as they know they are different groups even though closely related and even on a same island. This is replicated to lower level as well a Javanese from Yogya will never claim Reog dance as his even though both are Javanese. As he knows he is not from Ponorogo.

@@abcddef2112 i think u should read my comment above, i already explain the racial construct in malaysia. in indonesia they dont used the concept of race or social status but they use an ethnicity while in malaysia we use the social status. malaysia claim javanese and minang culture as part of malaysia culture and not part of malay culture and that simply because there are plenty of minang and javanese in malaysia. even the state of negeri sembilan was establish by minang community and the first yang dipertuan agong of malaysia which kinda like the king of king in malaysia is a minang decent from pagaruyung kingdom. btw whats is wrong with a different ethnic group practice culture from different ethnic group ? even indonesia it self practice culture from different counntry like example nasi goreng which originaly from china or the use of ramayana epic used in many folk theater performance that originally from india or the keroncong music that originally from portugese. there no such thing as pure culture. all culture have influence each other.

Having said that, we’re also need to take into account of special privileges provided for the bumiputra, such as UiTM, MARA and so on. This special privilege also, in one way or another contributes to the racial segregation as well. Nothing against bumiputra, since I am one myself but I do understand non-bumis frustration of being ‘sidelined Malaysian’. Personally, I have nothing against vernacular schools, I have many good friends who was brought up with the system. Granted they are typical DAP supporters and occasionally questioned bumiputra privilege, right for UEC and Muslim country status, but I take it as it is their freedom of expression and we’re still good buddies. My point is, if they have to deal with bumiputra privilege, then I see no reason for us not to tolerate vernacular schools.

Hence Singapore with zero natural resources has become a developed country. Malaysia , in 1990 , aimed to be developed by 2020. i doubt they will be developed even by 2200. If Malaysia has a good government, Singapore is really a gone case. No way to compete.

But little does he know that they are forced to pick a religion for the birth cert on a week old baby? His wife said you have to pick even the government worker were also saying you have to pick something, then my friend was like ok then he is athiest and the worker response that was not the choice. So basically the options he have was christian, muslim, buddist and hindu. In his mind his initial thought was that if he pick christian then his child might get religious discriminate since the majority race who choose muslim distrust the christian as bad alternative religion which probably tie back during the british coloinal era hostility, the effect is still going on today becoming legal form of racism. So he decided to pick buddist in the end because it is the closest to athiest religion, when my friend walk out from the office he said that he was not very happy at all no surprised
Putting race and religion as first into any politics was a very bad idea and easy form of manipulation to it one big race and ingrained mentality towards the minorities, possibility afraid of their culture and language being wipe off by certain ethnicity. What a contradictory views portrayed and actual things happen in Malaysia. Before this so called progressive government “PH” took over, the racial tension was not as high as it is currently. People lived harmoniously. The concept of 1Malaysia has somehow unified Malaysian as one. Malay/Muslims rights are honoured and the other races respect each other. Factors contributing disharmony among races in Malaysia lies in the leadership at the highest level. Rivalry of power between cabinet, between internal parties, Islamophobic statements by ministers, slow economy, unqualified minister(a university dropouts in culinary is our defence minister), false promises and many more. Dr Rais Yatim mentioned in the video, to make Satu Bangsa Malaysia, it need to be constituted. Funny when Malays and Muslims constituted rights are being denied, called backwards and racist. The only thing can help to create a truly Bangsa Malaysia fall hugely on education and school system. Malaysia need to stop to maintaining all race majority funded based school and integrate it as one. This is the only solution.

As a Malay in economic view what i can tell this is a product of our history during colonial time where they (the penjajah) separates 3 race in a very efficient way for more then hundred of year. where malay at the sawah padi, indian at the estate and chinese in the city. the Malay after independence, all the animosity with other races on the unfair treatment in their own land during the colonial time makes them distrustful of other races and want to be superior. from there born the current policy Malay first. As for the chinese and indian they were left with their own device with minimal support from the government after couple of generations they also start with the racial games Chinese or indian first. fun notes During P Ramlee and Sudirman time there were less racial animosity as this two big malaysian figure promotes race equality in their arts.

I think he is right, Malaysia doesn't have a common identity that can unite people from different races or cultures. The root of Malaysian culture is based on Islam which does not go well with multiculturalism. On the other hand, if you look at Singapore, the root of Singaporean culture is multiculturalism itself, so, people have no problem identifying themself as being Singaporean. Or one more example, if you look at Thailand, the Thai culture is based on Buddhism, it is indeed a religion-based culture as same as in Malaysia, but the difference is that Buddhism is a multiculturalism-friendly religion, buddha's teaching is pretty much about being happy, to be kind or being tolerate.

My guess is it will happen within 50 years. If you study history across the ages, most prominently involving Russia, but also others in the West you will understand the current policies is giving a casus belli for both countries. They are just not strong enough to enforce it.

    1. Malaysia government and citizen of immigrants defendants agrees to close foreign countries language, e.g., Chinese and Tamil school.
The school in Malaysia must only be national language schools, no Chinese language or Indian language school.
Many other races in Malaysia, Iban, Kadazan, Bajau, Rungus, Kedayan, Bidayuh, Melanau, Siamese, Portuguese, Muruts, doesn’t have their own languages schools. Malaysia and the country got no problem with them and considered Bangsa Malaysia.
