    Such a sweet song.
    About just being happy.
Two people at a wonderful time in their relationship having an "ordinary day", but it captures the simple and almost holy beauty, of enjoying a pleasant day with someone you love. How rare to have a day where everything goes right....and then to capture the moment in a way that has been touching the hearts of millions of people for decades.
The people who have felt it...
...and the people who long for it and dream of having it someday.
My mom, God rest her soul, didn't like a lot of my music but she had an ear for hits and she had a soft spot in her heart for this song so i knew it was going to be a hit: "The one about the house with the two cats in the yard, i like that one."

So sorry for your loss. It is a special song for you and your family.
A song that is comforting for me is Kate Bush’s “Moments of Pleasure.” A song she dedicated to people whom she loved that passed away. She wrote a line for her mother in it as well. “ And I can hear my mother saying, every old sock meets an old shoe. Ain’t that a great saying.” She told her mom about it just before her mom passed away from cancer and Kate said her mom just laughed. It’s a brilliant song. My husband passed away in 2009, and I tear up a little when she mention his name in the song. She had a Michael in her life as well. “ Hey there Michael, do you really love me.” The official video is great.

Please listen to Rhiannon Giddens! You will not be the same afterwards.
Rhiannon Giddens with The Carolina Choclate Drops
The Chocolate Drops got their start in 2005 with Giddens, Flemons and fiddle player Justin Robinson, who amicably left the group in 2011. The Durham, North Carolina-based trio would travel every Thursday night to the home of old-time fiddler and songster Joe Thompson to learn tunes, listen to stories and, most importantly, to jam. Joe was in his 80s, a black fiddler with a short bowing style that he inherited from generations of family musicians. Now he was passing those same lessons onto a new generation. When the three students decided to form a band, they didn’t have big plans. It was mostly a tribute to Joe, a chance to bring his music back out of the house again and into dancehalls and public places.
Please listen to Rhiannon Giddens! You will not be the same afterwards.

    Rhiannon Giddens Solo Performances
Giddens is a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, an alumna of the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, and a 2000 graduate of Oberlin Conservatory at Oberlin College, where she studied opera.
In addition to her work with the Grammy-winning Chocolate Drops, Giddens has released two solo albums: Tomorrow Is My Turn (2015) and Freedom Highway (2017). Her latest album, There Is No Other (2019), is a collaboration with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi. She appears in the Smithsonian Folkways collection documenting Mike Seeger's final trip through Appalachia in 2009, Just Around The Bend: Survival and Revival in Southern Banjo Styles - Mike Seeger’s Last Documentary (2019). In 2014, she participated in the T Bone Burnett-produced project titled The New Basement Tapes along with several other musicians, which set a series of recently discovered Bob Dylan lyrics to newly composed music. The resulting album, Lost on the River: The New Basement Tapes, was a top-40 Billboard album.

When I found out the back story to this song it just amazed me that a great song like this could be written so quickly from such a mundane activity. Graham said that Joni came running into the house after picking the flowers because she had a song idea as well but he beat her to the piano. It's brilliant. Also, there is a movie about David Crosby and his life and in the movie he shows the house that this song was written in.

    Yes, but, "Ohio."

    • @rk41gator
      @rk41gator 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

OHIO is a culturally important song of protest and would be very appropriate for what we are going through today!
Most Americans do not know that at the very same time, Genesis also wrote a song about the Kent State shootings called 'The Knife'. Since they were in England it never had any impact here but shows how important the student shootings were in 1970 world wide. Check it out here: th-cam.com/video/5XhDHJNuyXw/w-d-xo.html
Peter Gabriel sings and plays flute, Phil Collins is on drums and the lyrics use the student chant "we are only wanting freedom". Powerful, but nothing like the impact of OHIO. I was in college and lived through the shock. It changed me (for the better).

Graham still speaks adoringly of Joni. I saw him in The Lyric Theatre in Birmingham a couple of years ago. Front row! He casually talked about how they had just been antique shopping, and Joni had bought a vase. It was a chilly LA winter day, and they talked about a fire and just laying in the rest of the day. Graham said he literally pulled in the drive, told Joni “I’ll light the fire, get some flowers for your new vase.” He literally walked in the house with the first two lines of the song! It was done in a very short while, think he said an hour or two. He’s still got it!! Excellent show! His stories are priceless! So many songs came from just every day, random stuff. “Just A Song Before I Go” was written in an airport waiting for a flight, to settle a bet that he couldn’t do it! And “Cathedral” was the most interesting of all!

Only because 1) I think you will like it, and 2) it's an artist from the late '70's that flew largely under the radar, and it would surprise me if you have heard it (but I'd love to see the reaction). The artist - Rickie Lee Jones. The song I recommend to start - "Danny's All Star Joint". Backstory (or myth, perhaps) is that she sang this over the phone to a producer who signed her based on that. Thanks and thumbs up on this reaction.
