- In this time lapse painting I demonstrate how to paint a great horned owl in acrylic paints and airbrushing. It was painted in acrylic (liquitex basics and heavy body) and air brushing (an Iwata with createx paint) /mixed media on a 11"x14" Fredrix NatureCore Paint Board. Thanks to Fredrix for providing me with the canvas.

Lisa, by now all of us who have followed you and watched your videos know that your works is GREAT !. Your background music, created by you, is great also. What I have picked up on reading your viewers commets is that you are very involved in interacting with the questions in the comments. I appreciated knowing that you took time out of your busy schedule to view others TH-cam videos on painting and commented on the view. Thanks again for your channel. This is making my snow bound days in Arkansas not bad at all. I will view many of your previous videos. Thanks again.
Lisa Your nature scenes are the best Ive seen...the animals you paint are seriously fantastic....amazing resemblance to the real thing...love it!
Thank you so much! =D
Wow... watching this stoned is so satisfying!!! Great job!
There are a lot of really good art tutorials, and great painters here on You Tube. You are definitely one of the very best. That Owl looks just like a photograph. If I hadn't seen you painting it myself, I would not have believed it! I'll be watching more of your videos to learn. I only just started painting so I need all the help I can get. My very first painting at a "paint night" and the bug bit me. Believe it or not I used a lot of what I learned just watching Bob Ross for so many years and was actually able to make some of those techniques come out my brushes on my first try!! Even though I learned a lot from watching him, I have soooooooo much more to learn. And I want to learn a lot of it from you!! Thanks for sharing your beautiful talent!
Thank you so much! I'm glad you got bit at your paint night class!
It looks so real, your art is amazing!!
Thanks! I watched your water lily video...it is absolutely beautiful!
I have an old Russian lens that makes the central image sharp, just like this, & the background with its spots of light, all soft & watery & diffused, very hard to find, but worth their weight in gold. Lovely work & Masterful effect ! Absolutely love it.!!
.Many Thanks & Kind R'grds.
Thanks! I just set my camera up on a tripod right next to my easel. I paint in a fairly dark room (personal preference, not because its better than a well lit room...probably the opposite actually), but I use an ottlite (best thing ever) clamped to my easel, shining on the painting. That seems to be enough light for the video. I'm sure there are better ways to do it, this is just what I've been doing :)
Another amazing painting!! I'm studing fine art and it my second year now i just hope i'll be almost as talented as you are
stunningly beautiful work!
Great painting as always!!!! Fantastic!!!
Brilliant work on the details. Beautiful work!
Thanks :)
Love Great Horned Owls.
Again, wonderful Lisa, just brilliant. And tell Echo, I have already. LOL
Beautiful! I love it!
Thanks! Your tiger painting came out great :D
Amazing! My favorite so far :)
There really isn't an easy answer to this. It completely depends on what you're painting, what colors you're using and how opaque/translucent they are. I *usually* paint a mid-ranged hue and add both lights and darks as I go. For a skull I would likely start with a base of grey or cream and add both shadows and highlights on top of that. On this owl I painted a dark brown base knowing that every color I would lay on top would have white mixed in making it opaque enough to cover the brown.
I was wondering when painting should you paint darks on top of lights, or lights on top of darks? When something (like a skull) is being painted and it is somewhat white with a hint of orange, brown or black?
that is stunning
Thank you :)
wow this is just lovely! I might have to paint something like this in art class (or at least try to xD )
You are such an inspiration for me :) I think you should do some tutorials
I really like this painting, great job. Do you have any tutorial videos on how to paint owls like this that are not time lapse or high speed. I am trying to learn how you accomplish the effects you use but have a hard time seeing them with the video running so fast. I am new to painting so I need all the help I can get. Again, great job. I hope to be half this good someday.
Terry W I don't at this time, but I will be making some slower ones available for purchase at some point :)
#beastmode feathers on point! Keep it up
I enjoyed watching the video, but do you have a slow version?
Its amazing how its done. You have a great talent......
-Thanks- Mike-
Mike Ree I don't for this one, sorry :(
Awesome Job! Thanks for your tutorials, I would like to know where did you buy your airbrush compressor? Thank you!
martin ponce de leon I bought mine from Coast Air Brush in Anaheim CA about 15 years ago :)
Thank you!
Your paintings are beautiful. Where do you get images from where you will not have copyright issue?
Thanks! If you do, I would love to see it! :D
You are such an inspiration to me. I'm going to start uploading more speed drawing videos soon. You and Lena have really inspired me to do so. Could you make a video of how you record your videos please? Or message me?? I can't find help anywhere, I even have a cannon rebel I bought for youtube. I just don't know how to set up the lighting or camera. Thank you so much!!
Thanks :D I actually have been uploading some tutorials. I have a tiger, a bird, and a portrait tutorial available. I can't link in the comments but if you check out my uploaded videos you will find them there :)
Thank you :D
Oh my ! My eyes.
Lovely painting I just wish you'd put a list of paint colors you used. I like painting animals with no background on wood.
Thanks :D
Thank you kind sir! =D
Do you varnish, gloss or anything after you're done with a painting?
Yes, for acrylic I use a gloss varnish by liquitex.
Nice work lisa, I am working on a lynx fur is next :)
You will have to share it when you're done, I would love to see it!
I will, thank you
oh.. and let your puppy know I subscribed :)
She said thank you :D (Actually she just barked at me all excited because cookies were involved, but lets pretend that was a "thank you" haha).
Great work! What brand of airbrush paint do you use?
Arthur Futernik ?? plzz tell me
Echo said I should give you a cookie for that :P
On my 3 videos delay my favorite is this one and hi to the dog, ouf ouf the dog understand ahahah
Do you work from a photo ? If so we're do you get them from ?
Hey how's it going, have you made a or have a slow version on doing this owl and other yet.
+Mike Ree No, there won't be a slow version of this one. It's old enough that I don't have the footage for it anymore. :(
Beautful!! Love Owls :) One suggestion, nothing to do with this video, on the advertisement that TH-cam is using for your "ad" you need to make your name or website stand out just a little bit more for us iPad users. I was watching an unrelated video when your ad played and I was so busy looking at your art and listening to you I couldn't get the name in time to go find you to subscribe. Sadly the App for TH-cam dose not allow to select subscribe while the ad was playing and I felt bad when your dog told me to subscribe and I couldn't. 24 hours later I was watching another video and thank goodness I was able to do a screen shot and go back to my pictures to catch the info I needed to look you up on TH-cam. Not bitching just letting you know to see if there is a solution for this problem because I am certain there are others that miss it and forget to look later like I did. :) Once again... great work!!!
Thanks, and your message just made these past few days make SO much sense! I had no idea why my old, unlisted channel trailer (the one you saw) was getting so many views. It seems youtube pulled it out of the archives and is airing it /facepalm lol. I have a newer one that says who I am more clearly, but it's still not perfect. I am planning to reshoot that one this week. Glad you were able to find me =D
Hey Lisa good morning....would you please explain something about the background out of focus....
Did you make a deal with the devil or something to het this talent? Holy shit its amazing!!!:O
L O L!!
p.s. do you dilute & airbrush oil paints here, as well ???
Atmosferic Lightwood No, just acrylics go into my airbrush :)
Lachri Fine Art Ah- thankyou L', but I actually meant, have you done an airbrush painting by using diluted oils, that I guess would be very fine.!! Still can't get over how knowledgeable & good you are..Brill.!!
HAHAHAHA!!
LOL ;-)
