Revolutionary ideas and culture-shifting inventions are often credited to specific individuals, but how often do these "geniuses" actually operate in creative silos?
Tim Sanders, former chief strategy officer at Yahoo, argues that there are three myths getting in the way of innovative ideas and productive collaborations: the myths of the expert, the eureka moment, and the "lone inventor."
More than an innate quality reserved for an elite group, neuroscientist Heather Berlin and neurobiologist Joy Hirsch explain how creativity looks in the brain, and how given opportunity, resources, and attitude, we can all be like Bach, Beethoven, and Steve Jobs.

-There is no such thing as a lone inventor. We want to be as empowered as Ayn Rand. We want to think that we are the fountainhead, so this is how we tell the story. But until you believe that genius is a team sport, you will never give up control.
- It's not just about collecting a bunch of data and knowing a lot of facts, but it's making these novel connections between ideas.
- I think all of us as humans are sort of endowed with the need to make things better. Genius is just an extreme version of that but it represents us as humans in a very fundamental way.
TIM SANDERS: There are myths of creativity and these myths are usually propagated by people that have romantic notions about heroes, romantic notions about eureka moments. And these myths of creativity keep people from collaborating and it causes them to be a lone wolf. And the research says it causes them to fail. So let me talk a little bit about those myths of creativity. In the world of sales and marketing, I battle against three myths. Myth number one, the lone inventor. This is very dangerous because there is no such thing as a lone inventor. As a matter of fact, there's a lot of historical research that has debunked Einstein. Specifically in terms of inventions, Henry Ford, not a lone inventor. Classic example, Thomas Edison. In the invention community, Thomas Edison is a brand. It stands for 14 people. Yes, there was a figurehead named Thomas Edison. His name is on 10,000 patents. He did not invent a single thing. He marshaled people together and knew how to spot innovations and put people together like, a creative soup, if you will. Here's a classic example, Steve Jobs, you ask the average person, say a millennial who uses a lot of Apple technology, "Who's one of the greatest inventors of our time?" They'll say Steve Jobs. Steve Jobs once said, "I never created anything. "All I did was notice patterns "and put people together to finish projects." So think about it. If he doesn't have Wozniak, there is no original Apple, right? If he doesn't have Ive, there is no iPod. If he doesn't have Tony Fiddel, there is no iPhone. And the list goes on and on.
Got a good friend of mine, David Berkus, who wrote a really wonderful book about the myths of genius. And he was telling me that it's a romantic notion. And I remember when I first read this research years ago, no lone inventor, it did kind of hurt my feelings. I'm a musician in my past. I thought I wrote a lot of songs but according to the research, I'd never wrote a song. I always collaborated with somebody, the song that actually made it to the record and made it on the radio had 15 to 50 hands on it. When I talked to David, I said, "When I read your research, it kind of hurt my feelings." And he goes, "It's a romantic notion because we want to be heroes." We want to be as empowered as Ayn Rand. We want to think that we're the Fountainhead. So this is how we tell the story. But until you believe that genius is a team sport, you will never give up control. And this is the problem for a lot of people in sales. They don't want to cede any level of control over their process to somebody outside of sales world because they don't value those voices enough. But the research is clear on this, Miller Heiman Institute researched the difference between good and great. They call it world-class organizations. They win, they sell 20% more than their nearest competitor. The only thing they have in common is they've broken this myth and they understand that every deal is about rapid problem solving and no one person can solve the problem on their own.
Quickly, the other two myths of creativity that must be dispelled is the eureka moment. There is no such thing as a big idea that changes the world. I know this is another one of those hurtful, but very true based on empirical research...

If you look closely, a person is a Genius not because they can remember a lot of facts or calculate fast. These are cognitive gifts. A genius is someone who connects information in a meaningful way. This depends on the way they think. This thinking is a skill development through introspection, reflection, and an open-mind.

Imagine if schools graded you as a team. As a grade. As a generation and it mattered. We would be lynching half the class. 1 slackers (me) and the over enthusiastic blonde cheerleaders. Well. Welcome to todays age. We have the internet. Kids watching these videos all day isnt slacking. Its learning. And look he failed his science Quiz but has a much better understanding of quantum mechanics and orbital mechanics than the teacher does.
I think that you have a marketing view of Genius. The Physicists on most peoples Genius list all worked alone though the latter ones all said that they "Stood on the shoulders of Giants". eg Galileo, Newton, and Einstein definitely worked alone in the early years before they were discovered.
Do you believe that Stephan Hawking is worthy enough to be considered one of the greats?
So how can you say that with so much certainty? Where you there when they were actually "lonely inventing". The thing is we don't know. And when the research says that it's true then what could we possibly trust?
They had people they knew who influenced them and they had writings by people who had gone before. Einstein had lots of conversations with other people and got feedback. He went to school and university. I think he had an uncle or a tutor who inspired him. He had his first wife. He had his friends. He was pretty social when he was young. His work was inspired by experiments that had been done by others. So while he was highly original and did great work he wouldn't have been able to do it without others.

Anyone that had a modicum of positive influence in his life. His ingenuity came in "hitting a target NO ONE could see". He did that alone. No one were in his imaginary experiments that he often did alone. As well, Nikola Tesla...a genius who died alone and performed most of his inventions and imaginary experiments while walking by himself (Einstein went out on a boat alone or walked alone). Ironic this guy mentions Edison who isn't a genius but never once mentioned Tesla... The true genius Edison tried to destroy. That's why this guy loses credibility.
That guy was way over the top and just speaking in generalities. I wouldn't take anything that he says seriously. He was taught at some point in his life, be and sound assertive, and you will go places. The girl made some good points. The secret to achieving genius is to focus on a problem literally 24/7 and your brain in the background makes all the connections it needs to solve the problem at hand. Your reticular activator is activated and the thoughts just come to you spontaneously at moments you least expect them, and they are usually, but not always, right on the money. Our brains have a really powerful background processor we also know as our subconscious and it takes care of this background processing.

This is the start of failure and confusion within people.
Genius is a word with an elusive definition, just like intelligence. What does it mean to be intelligent? Is someone who is terrible at math but a musical prodigy not in some sense a genius? Is someone who can't carry a tune but intuitively soaks up and understands complex mathematics not in some sense intelligent?
Try as we might, we still can't really nail a working definition, and we've been trying for literally thousands of years. These are matters that have always been, and still are, hotly debated.
How do you quantify either? An IQ test? Maybe... But it's my opinion that any test we come up with will only manage to quantify a tiny subset of what "intelligence" must *really* be.
That's why this video is kind of pointless. It's just a bunch of people telling you their subjective opinions on genius, just like I just shared mine. A little interesting, I guess, but the implied "authority" of the speakers is a really misleading presentation, and that's something that irks me, and something this channel has a real habit of doing. It's pretentious.
I noticed that too, stopped watching. Like you said, a bunch of people relaying their perspectives and breaking "myths". Some value to it, but ultimately a bit pointless. Great observations, thanks for sharing!
Ericsson did a whole load of research that calls for redefinement/debunking of the concepts of genius and talent; he's worth looking into.
100% agree, but be that as it may, it's still a tool to (if you overthink like I do) think about what you think about things. It can encourage you to form your own opinion on whatever topic they think relevant, which has its purpose.
Everyone's got their own strengths. No one person can expect to be good at everything.

My father worked for a manufacturing company in Chicago and decided to move out west several years before he would have retired. Without much of a business plan he had a few 💡 ideas but mainly he had a certain quality I'll just call courage. He was not shy. He went to the industrial plants in town and offered to tune up the efficiency of the machines that he made in Chicago.
One company heard that dad was in town and agreed to meet with him to discuss a money making idea he called "sortation".
We agreed to build the machines and they agreed to sell them... BUT when it came time to recieve the patent a problem came up with our patent attorney who said that rarely, if ever, do patents go to more than one person. The issue was resolved when they failed to sell enough machines. But we DID live up to our end by building a sufficient number of machines. We managed to stay in business for close to 40 years making these sorting and counting conveyor systems when technology and changes in the linen supply buisness caught up with us. I wonder if anyone else has had any similar experiences with patents?
Only the one that understands the process that led to the discovery will not be surprised by it's ingenuity. We only call one a genius because we haven't gone through the process of understanding ourselves

I've noticed that in the musician situation in a band , that even when I did the majority of the composing I still needed and wanted the input of the others to make the music better . Inspired creative think works best when we feed of others and the excitement it brings pushes to new heights and it makes it fun .
Keeping an open mind is important for the formation of new ideas.

They are an exteme rarity.... The obvious cost of this is being extremely alien to people... They were the type that would get cooped up somewhere with long periods of hyperfocus but I guess some had quite a bit of interactions that we do not know of but Leonardo da Vinci had interactions with people like Michelangelo

What team did Newton collaborate with when he invented calculus and classical mechanics? Sure he did stand on the shoulder of giants, but that does not take away from the fact that his own genius and contributions happened in isolation hiding away from a plague that was raging around 1665.

When I say he stood on the shoulders of giants I mean that obviously he didn't invent all of the mathematics that calculus was built on top of. But what I'm saying is that the part that he personally created was not done together with a team in the way that Thomas Edison or Steve Jobs depended on working with other people. If you want to focus and think deeply and in novel ways about a subject isolating yourself from other people for some time can be helpful.

The survival of our species, from our beginning, relied upon each and every individual in the community playing their part in some way. Yeah we individually can survive on our own, but that doesn't further along the evolution of the species. Together, we are an entity that can do great things
Most people don’t have a team available to pull themselves out of poverty, they have to rely on their individual talents to make it happen. Sure, big projects like the iPhone or space travel aren’t going to be accomplished by a single individual, but that isn’t revelatory, interesting, or applicable to most people.

I don’t disagree with the more pragmatic intuition of your response, however I think the evolution of higher ideals and understanding may always be distanced from the immediate, pragmatic day-to-day plights of normal individuals. That is to say-I’m not sure that clicking on what could be deemed (for better and for worse) naval gazing should yield the immediate expectation for keys to unlocking a viable strategy for social mobility. Just as most of us do not have access to such teams as described in the video, most of us also could not be considered genius. What is iterative and perhaps revelatory is challenging the commonly held myth that somehow these individuals are gods unto themselves. While this may not seem like much of a victory so far as the plight of the common man without access to teams of elevated medial prefrontal cortexes, it might help demystify creativity and genius a bit, inspiring the abandonment of antiquated and potentially destructive isolated ideals of genius and accomplishment. It might encourage us to work and think more collaboratively, reminding us that the truth of individual genius and capacity is only realized when combined with others. In an era arguably short on collaboration, cooperation, and diligence in personal reflection and recognition of patterns, there may be insights yet to be gleaned from such an otherwise perceptibly inapplicable reflection on loftier concepts.

I don't know, haha...I think this notion that there is no such thing as a lone genius is the myth, something we tell ourselves for motivation, haha...sometimes works of genius come out of collaboration (perhaps most of the time), but sometimes it comes from someone working alone...did Andrew Wiles collaborate during those years of work on Fermat's Last Theorem? (now, haha, I know he made a mistake which was corrected by one of his graduate students or something...but he pretty much worked all those years like a hermit)...ok, maybe all ideas do, to some extent, come from elsewhere, from others, one "stands on the shoulders of giants (Newton was often working alone, another example, many scientists from the olden days were more isolated than they are today), but still...was Ramanujan collaborating with people in India, other than showing people his work, before the whole Hardy thing?...This is wishful thinking...

Lone Inventor meaning he’s the mind. The end product sure need a team but the thinking process, the generation of the idea sure does come from a sole genius mind.

I am giving here 2 Examples of the Great Scientists who were the Real Geniuses . One is Galileo Galilei and the other is Sir Isaac Newton. Were there Inventions a result of a Team or a Previous Background Support. As far as my information is concerned, their Inventions were Independent of any External Support and also was not Based on any of the Opportunity as being referred to . If I am wrong, I may kindly be corrected please. Thanks

Well, people definitely differ by their abilities, both physical and mental as well. It can be measured with formal test (as pattern recognition, or IQ), but also can be roughly assessed by simple talk. I've met many different people in my life and normally after just few minutes of talk you can clearly determine the scope of someone's abilities and education. And I'm not saying that education makes you necessarily smart, but a clever and curious person just browse, search and finds out information on their own (especially nowadays).

If a person could be trained to exhibit the highest IQ... I wouldn't consider that genius. That's just an above average ability to recall facts, details...
A genius is being able to take concepts of details, facts and theory and fit them together in such a way that it feels like child's play.
The combination of abstract patterns and fractions of ideas take shape to form complete projects, so effortlessly that one can't believe that it's not already on the market.
Genius is not taught, it's manifested and exposed.

i can't remember the source but i remember learning that einstein's creativity came from a bunch of sci fi writers of his time. i suspect that they were on a lot of drugs. i wish that this video had covered the role that psychedelics have played on our creativity and innovation

Today, its pretty hard to do alone I agree. But I think in different eras of the past it was easier just due to progression it gets harder and harder.
Newton was a lone genius, Boltzmann was a lone genius; lone genius is rare and narrowly applicable to domains such as mathematics, novel writing, physics, and programming, though the majority of individuals in these fields collaborate. The issue is people don't think nuanced enough to get the picture of creativity, because creativity is domain specific, but even this guy is talking about creativity synonymous with genius and creativity unilaterally or universally.
@Adruhza _ I agree, everyone learns from others but not everyone works solitarily to bring about a new perspective or way of seeing in doing something. It's the individual effort that makes for the seminal contribution that makes for lone genius.
I believe in eureka,in geniuses,but i also believe in smartness and exploitation...many geniuses have never been recognized
there are two kinds of people in the world: geniuses, and those who claim to be one. I am a genius.
Pixar was in development for years, then they hooked up with Disney, then Toy Story, etc. I am pretty sure Disney knew what they had bought into. creativity is when you invent an entire category... like eistein discovered an entire field of math. This guy is an average guy that got salty that he wasn't special.
If you look at history, the majority of the innovative ideas came from individuals. It's the group of people that turn it into reality. You can have innovative ideas about something, but you need resources, funding, and teams to make it happen.

I've had eureka moments. But I have no idea how that relates to what is going on simultaneously in everyone else's minds.
But the moment you have a eureka moment, you know that anyone who says you cannot have a eureka moment is the guy that never has had a eureka moment, and therefore needs to suck off other people's stuff or be in a group that can make a whole out of a puzzle.

Yea, tbh there is a big problem too now where lots of gifted youth are being swept up by addiction because 1# Society shuns them and so they become anti-social 2# Economic and in some cases, socioeconomic reasons are now causing more pathways in life to have more "Risk" to be involved and the "Reward" is not worth it. 3# Parents that don't care(The lack of a certain but unconditional love is key here) and 4# The biggest and most hidden killer, medical conditions. More specifically, TBI's and Thyroid conditions that are misdiagnosed as "ADHD" and "Bi-Polar". I have been able to connect dots ever since I was a kid in a way that hardly anyone but those who could sit down with me and talk to me could understood growing up, although I wasn't autistic. I was just so socially inept. That being said, I've went through multiple TBI's, all in my frontal cortex after 3 different accidents(I got really lucky) and a decade of addiction to opioids. I'm clean now and have been trying to help other addicts change their lives. I have been clean for almost 2 years but I am probably going to die soon because I am poor, am no longer able to afford getting back and forth to my doctors and MAT/IOPtreatment, and am waiting on SSDI even though I am 29 years old because of my TBI's. I have more than a million dollars in medical bills in the past, I am still dealing with tons of issues. Despite all of this I am still able to do the weird dot connecting although other parts of my body aren't in the best of shape and so I continue. If someone wants to know the answers to addiction, the true state of what's happening on the streets, and everything else that needs to be known so that this doesn't happen to another person. I fell through the cracks, fought it all and once I won and got the job shadow I had been fighting my life towards, I decided to screw my life up because I was tired of fighting to be poor and wanted to be a heroin addict(Legit, 100% WANTED to be the best heroin addict I could be. Turns out I had a thyroid issue.), got TBI's, got clean, and now... I guess I keep fighting. Idk why I wrote this, I had to vent I guess so here are my ramblings internet. Have it at it, be free lol.

Some times discoveries are made on opposite sides of the planet with neither having a clue about the other. That lends itself more to the ethereal sheet surrounding everything type of vision. Some people do absolutely see things others cannot even comprehend I am witness to this all of the time. Maybe not genius maybe more receptive.
Ideas come from highly creative mind (AKA “geniuses”) execution come from team effort. Yes, the idea and the execution can come from a single person but in The modern world where highly skilled people are abundant why would you want to work alone?

One societal problem giving to 3 people. 3 intellects they have are an average person, moderately gifted person and a genius. The average will find a few solutions for the problem, the moderately gifted will include the average persons solution and a few more. The genius will list all solutions they came up with a few the other two couldn't even fathom to see.

I have to humbly disagree that geniuses occur in teamwork. There definitely are geniuses, but they are FEW in our lifetimes. A few examples Isaac newton, Albert Einstein, and Claude Shannon. I think this philosophy only applies to the corporate world.

I think geniuses are both born and made. Einstein is a born genius. Newton is made genius. Da Vinci is a mix of born and made geniuses. So, it's a myth that we are all the same, we made that myth to feel good and have courage. And it's also a myth that they are different and unapproachable, and we made that myth to magnifie them.

I'll be honest. I do believe that most of the observations made here are valid. However I still have this sadly nagging feeling they're trying to diminish, in a dangerous way, the achievements of the individuals mentioned. It begins to sound as if anyone could do it if you tap the right part of the brain. I know about Steve Jobs. But then again I never regarded him as a genius inventor, just a producer. Einstein on the other hand.... no amount of debunking of parts of what he positted will bring him an inch closer to my level of ineptitide, however grand my general love of truth and coherence.
