If you live in the UK you wait until something goes wrong with a Dahon or Tern - I've had both and there is basically one Bike Shop in the whole country that has anything like the spares you might need and if they don't stock them - you basically won't get hold of them. There have been changes and you can now substitute many components with standard ones but that doesn't apply to ; Wheels, spokes, some nuts and bolts. The other thing is that continued folding and movement of letting down the seat post will wear to a point that you have no alternative but replace the whole seat post - which is expensive and guess what, only the same shop sells the range you will need because even Dahon's and Tern's own range of cycles have different seat post diameters. The other thing after hard riding and commutes is that for all folding bikes the best option is a hub /enclosed gear system I have consistently had to replace drive chains regularly , this is partially because the gears are so low to the ground and pick up all the delightful crud on British roads and just because I feel that exposed derailleurs on small wheeled folding bikes just don't seem to last. I am about to buy a Brompton because a) they seem to work well b) there are literally thousands of bike shops that will repair and have parts and c) the Dahon type bikes suffer from one more issue that might not be apparent - an enormous ammount of pressure both from the rider and any luggage seems to be put on the back wheel and I have gone through so many wheels (including specially strengthened ones ) and spokes etc .The Brompton design has suspension and appears offset from the weight issue - we'll see! I may be going back to Dahon's who knows, what this space. Hope this is helpful - even the cheaper folders are expensive so it's only fair that people know what they are going to have to deal with. Happy Cycling to one and all!

i've found you can find all the dahon bits and pieces on ebay easily enough these days. And not at mad prices either. However all these folding bicycles feel overpriced.

The Dahon Mariner D8 is one excellent bike. Best bike I've ever owned, and in addition it gets alot more because it folds. All I had to buy is a Dahon Landing Gear so I can wheel around while folded, it just makes it easier for me.

I have to agree totally with your review even though I have nothing against Dahon. Dahon has proven that they are more than capable of building a high quality bicycle but I think they need more focus.
Instead of trying to build a 16 inch folder which they apparently cannot compete when it comes to the Brompton they should instead focus on the what they are best at, building 20 inch folders. If they would stop trying to create different models every year and instead focused on improving the models they already have they'd be able to possibly provide the same quality and replacement parts that the Brompton has and even temp Brompton fans to purchase their bicycles. I'd even consider a 20 inch folder for longer rides.

Well said. Dahon and Brompton are the biggest folding bike manufacturers and you can't go wrong with either of them. Just avoid some cheap folders from China.

My Dahon folding bike the D8 just snapped on me today right in the middle of an intersection on my way to work today. It snapped right behind the folding mechanism right above the crank. There was a bad weld on the bottom of the center tube where the small vertical angle tube meets the center tube. It looks like they might have a hard time welding in that small confined area. I had the bike for less than a year so I'm looking to get a replacement bike under the warranty. Wish me luck.
Don't buy a Dahan D8, especially if you are an adult man who weighs 180 lb or more.

    • @myperspective5091
      @myperspective5091 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

The bike also had major issues with derailing the chain on the front chain ring. Where the chain meets the top of the ring the angle is too steep. It is too low of an angle due to the back wheel being lower on the centerline then the crank is so every time you switch gears you run the risk of derailing your chain. You definitely cannot pedal while shifting even on flat ground. God forbid trying that on a hill in automatically derail.
You have to stop peddling each time you want to switch a gear. You have to wait a second for the chain to settle, then you can start pedaling again.

I believe bicycles are like donuts; the worst I ever had is still enjoyable. I have a Brompton H3L and a Dahon Vitesse 3-speed. The Brompton is far superior in design and build quality. There is no comparison. But if you want a folder and can't pay the Brompton price, Dahon is a good option.

My Dahon Boardwalk cracked when I took it down a flight of stairs last week. It's unusable now and the warranty won't cover the damage. I only weigh 185 and the thing used to feel like it was gonna break when I did jumps and wheelies. I'll be getting a Brompton next time.

A single-frame-tube folding bike, especially the cheapest Dahon available, will not be able to take the stress of performing BMX type stunts. This includes the Brompton (which though wonderfully engineered does 'flex' much more than a traditional bike). And at 84kg you are quite a big person and will thus be putting a lot of stress through the bike frame. I would recommend a bike with a more traditional diamond-frame or at least more robust frame , there are some good folding ones out there, not as light and compact as the Dahon 'minimalist' ones, but much more durable and able to give you the fun-style ride you are looking for. Happy riding.

i notice you don't have the fingers on the brakes ready to break on the brompton because they are vertical, vs horizontal on the dahon (with the fingers on the breaks ready to break instantly), isn't it a problem for emergency breaking ?

On the Dahon website all the bikes under $750 are sold out. Wonder why? That is absurd to pay that much for a foldable bike. I have an older model Dahon I think D5 that I used to ride for 19 miles a day and I never had a problem with it. Amazon has new non-name foldable bikes of what look to be the same design for less than $300. These two companies are now on my shit-list because they use every trick in the dirty-dealing book to try to get people to hike the prices up. Like offering the nice bright colors for hundreds more than drab black, white, grey or green. I have no used for companies that have such bad intentions.

Those look nice and they are for sale on Amazon. But the only questions I have on these bikes is that I have to raise the seat post up so high that only about 2-3 inches are secured in the frame ... so I sorry about that, and the ability to find a large size post if the original will not be long enough. Then also the riding position is good for me on the Dahon. But as far as durability I know these bikes work, and they are fine and strong enough, even with the hinge in the frame. Do you mind me asking how much you paid for your euromini zizzo and if you got it online? Sounds good. Me and my girlfriend both want to get new bikes or the same brand.

Do people really buy Dahon's because they fold? I see them everywhere in China, even have a friend who has one. He has one not so much because it folds but because it is a really small bike. It rolls into and out of elevators with no problem and can navigate tight spaces, easy. He doesn't fold it when he parks it in his apartment, but it still takes up much less room than either of my bikes with their full size frames and 700c wheels. I've kind of wondered why Dahon doesn't make a tiny, non-folding bike without the hinge. Could be made much lighter if they didn't cut the frame.

Your joking right? Brompton are known for having the cheapest parts and most Brompton owners spend a fortune on getting rid of most of the stock parts for upgraded bits. Dahon has standard parts so is way easier to upgrade and then there’s the wheel size - 16” is a bone shaker. I just got a vello bike which is like a Brompton that’s evolved into what it should be,the folds much easier and parts are standard,20” wheels & price wise better value all round. The only thing that’s appealing about Brompton is it’s folded size but it’s hopeless next to any quality tern or Dahon or 20” folder, check the vello bike or Ahooga both are much better than our old Brompton, they could AMG it for the 21st century and bring out a 20” big bro

Most people would buy a Brompton if they had the money. The Dahon is only cheaper. But once you try a Brompton, you will see the difference.
After all is said and done, Brompton made in England is the choice for most people who can afford it.
If you cannot afford a Brompton, then a Dahon is your next ideal choice unless you want a Tern...
After using mines for a few years, I have not had to repair it. And I have tested various Dahons. They still have not arrived to Brompton's style, social awareness or build quality...
Now check out the competition, like Tern.

Brompton ... hype and over priced. Built quality went down in recent years , just look at the welding and joints, all done by apprentice (or worse). Very few mechanics know how to service the complex Sturmey Archer hub properly, so 90% of the B all have a hub full of gunk. The wheels are assembled from low quality BMX type hubs and spoke; rough and a joke. The recent batches of B all have rust problems, and paint chip off easily. The choice is yours.

These "high-end" bikes are a rip-off. There is no reason a Brompton or Dahon has to be over $1000, just Google Brompton bike and you will see the tiniest of bikes costing almost $1500. That is ridiculous, it should be a crime. They justify the price by saying the frames need to be so much smaller for a foldable bike, but my old Dahon D3 has never failed, it doesn't vibrate or shake. And it was still too expensive. Now they have a lot of new foldable bike companies that are making the same bikes for under $300 ... so I guess Dahon's only choice is to try to sell itself as a luxury brand and charge as much as Brompton. I think also Dahon has more models than Brompton, but when you get to the over $1000 for a commuter bike you are paying for a status symbol. I think it is more of a stupid signal.

Folding bikes can not compeed with normal bikes, but they do not have. A folding bike is used to the train station/ bus stop/ streetcar stop. The bike gets folded and the rider takes the bike into the public transport. And after leaving the PT, the rider only has to ride a short distance, just a few miles. The only comfortable folding bike for the long distance is the HP Velotechnik Gekko 20 or 26 fx trike www.hpvelotechnik.com/produkte/gekko_fx26/index_e.html

Why do people keep saying this as if it's a good thing? If this was 1850 then yeah England was at the forefront of the industrialised world, but it's time to accept times have changed.
China is the new industrial powerhouse of the world, there was a time only cheap stuff was made there, but now it's pretty much everything. China has developed so much that their own wages are rising so they outsource some labour to Africa!
Look at Raleigh - UK company, they used to be a huge player in the bike world, whereas now they're just hanging on. Look at British cars - they died out because they were were atrocious and completely outclassed by foreign competition.
England is uncompetitive in pricing. So it's perfectly feasible you can get a better quality bike for cheaper, that's made abroad. Maybe the Brompton's the exception I've never ridden one, but using the "made in England" thing is actually an argument against a product if anything - that you're paying over the odds unnecessarily. Of course there's the whole "support british industry" side of it, but that's a seperate issue altogether. You can't use it as an indication of quality.

I've been riding this bike for about a month th-cam.com/users/postUgkxwC0IIeIomGQVeBWg-kKJaToZkLEFIA2W and a half now and I think it's fantastic. It helps me get to work on time every day since I'm able to fit it inside of public transportation rush hour. The price is great too, people are always shocked when they ask me how much I paid for the fold up and I tell them "200". It's easy to fold and installation when it ships is insanely easy. All you have to install when the bike arrives is one foot pedal, everything else is done for you. I do recommend you carry some sort of wrench to tighten any loose screws on the handle bar and seat whenever they get a little bit loose. Other than that I think it's a fantastic bike. Easily fits in the home, can fit inside a car trunk and can even fit in subway rush hour.
