    Daler Rowney is a very old English brand dating back to about 1780s. It started off as Daler, then 1983 purchased George Rowney company to become Daler Rowney. Their artist range is much smaller than other companies but very good and it’s surprising how much it’s overlooked.

    Assembling palettes and selecting colours is SO much fun! There’s so much anticipation about how you might use the palette and what you’ll create with each one and even thinking of where you’ll use it. It’s like this little pocket of “hope and dreams” in paint form 😍. Lovely colour selections, I like how each of your palettes has a really different feel or vibe.
    I bought WAY too many travel palettes last year, I was worried about the loss of revenue all of these businesses must be facing with my “low buy”, but I have no worries, you’ve taken over for me… I’m reassured that all of the businesses will still be around when I’m ready to buy again 😂.

      You are way ahead of me! I like just putting colours together that I feel 'fit right' - not really thought much about using them yet!

    The W&N set was so compact and clever I had to order one. I think I'll fill it with an early Spring palette..Davy's grey and copper blue for sky, some holbein pastels, chartreusey green, transp. orange, some bright, clear red, and maybe a rich perylene violet. I sometimes cut colored pencils in half and carry a few greens in one of the small leather travel brush pouches. Happy painting!

      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Haha! Sorry for the temptation! Your palette sounds totally gorgeous though!
      That's funny - I've just been wondering if I should chop some pencils up to take smaller ones on my trip - I might just do a couple of Prismacolor greens.

      Be extra careful with the prismas, the core will shatter all the way down if stressed or crushed. I use a little, fine hacksaw and work my way around them, and dip the butt end in thick nail polish to seal. Learned this by murdering several prisma victims.

    Hi, I think the sizing in your Moleskine paper has gone bad. The sizing usually keeps water from soaking right into the paper, allowing the pigment and water to move on top of the paper. I’ve had the exact same problem with different papers from different companies. My Canson Moulin du Roy and Saunders Waterford are the most frequent offender in my case. It usually happens when I leave my papers in an airy space for a long time. These days I put my papers in a ziplock to keep them from the humidity. When I put my papers in an airtight space, the sizing doesn’t behave as much anymore. Lots of my papers had gone bad and looked exactly like your Moleskine. I heard applying watercolor ground or Holbein multisizing might help, but I haven’t tried it either.
    Winsor and Newton’s palettes are so cute, they always tempted me to buy another palette that I don’t need :’). Thanks for sharing!

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว

      Ah, that's very interesting, thank you! The Moleskine did seem especially bad this last time I used it. Mind you, I didn't like it when it was brand new either. Maybe I ought to buy a new one of the smallest size I can, just to give it one more go. Thanks so much for commenting!

    Very cool. I've been on a travel palette kick too! I have an Aquafine tin in the shape of a CD (round) that's pretty cool, but the paints are so so. Nice tin though. I picked up the W&N blue field box Cotman set cheap on Amazon and put in 14 pans (from tubes) from their professional line. Although, for sketch work, the Cotmans would be fine. I like converting dollar store eyeshadow palettes too for a minimalist set. Love your sets and your channel. 🎨💗

    Regarding the Cotman set, I believe that you can also pull out the top mixing panel and afix it on the bottom side of the pallet.

    I really enjoy watching your videos. However, for most travel I find it easy to take my Winsor/Newton 24 tin -its not that big and I've never found it hard to find water separately. I actually prefer this for most situations because then I have the paints I use everyday.

      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว

      I can definitely see the sense in taking your everyday tin! I just like collecting art materials though, and this was fun! I don't actually have one every day palette though, so I can imagine my black 20 half pan tin becoming that.

      @@helencryer Hi Helen, to clarify I do have multiple palettes by various brands, and like everyone I enjoy creating smaller specialty versions . I admit no responsibility for you purchasing the daler-rowney palette tin 😁 I do take brushes separately (I have a set of kuretake zig water brushes and then a retractable prolene plus set) so that plus water means it's not the best all in one but as you've seen, in terms of slim design and capacity it's difficult to beat. The WN field kit looks brilliant for an all in one set and probably (for us in the UK at least) more accessible than the portable painter sets.
    I did realise I have access to community posts here on YT now, so I've tossed up a post with a photo of my own DR tin to show how I arranged it ❤

      Hiya, I just got in, and got both tubes out - the swatches I did on the video are the same as what is coming out of the (correct) tubes, so I'm as sure as I can be. The Quin Burnt Scarlet is new this year, though the Burnt Umber is older, if that makes any difference. Only other thing I can think of is that fact it's videoed, and monitor settings etc?

    Why do you say that the A Gallo paints are bad mixers? Maybe you should do a video on that if only to see the mixes. You can then compare the paints that mix badly with equivalent paints from other brands to see how they compare.

    • @helencryer
      @helencryer  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My impression was that they seemed to make murkier mixes, possibly because so many of the ones I have are multiple pigments. (I have 26 or so from their full range). The individual colours are so unique and beautiful though - I didn't really buy them to mix, so I don't mind. Possibly I'll give that a go sometime, though I'm not sure how it'll translate in video.
