Same. MY memory of this is way off from what it's about and I had no idea the show 'Alice' was based off this. But there's Mel. I must have confused this with another movie as in my distant kid memory I thought 'Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore' had to do with a young girl and drugs. Looking up things, that must have been 'Go Ask Alice'.
If I'm not mistaken, this was shown on HBO a few times. I saw the sitcom first, but I remember coming across this scene. I remember the pink uniforms and I remember Mel in his usual attire.
I saw this with my mom when I was 8. The movie was just like my moms life. My mom got divorce and moved to Phoenix with me...her son. ...the the sit com ALice came out and the story went on...lol
@@bolshevi3187 How is it not and what exactly is there to be optimistic about? I just can’t sit there looking at the screen like a zombie but good luck to you.
I think your telling me more about yourself then cinema. Cinema is too broad to be labelled as such, you’ll have to explain what aspect you find so zombifying. Then again, a TH-cam comment section is hardly the place to have such discussions. So yes, you’ll have to expand on what you mean by cinema, and what it is that you want from it
@@MrRaulstrnad I mean, thank god we no longer have the porn era of cinema in the 70s. Read up on the history, Jack Nicholson watching these films in the 70s. I would rather the marvel scene than a return to that cinema. But of course, you think history is so simple and neat… it isn’t. Things you’re nostalgic for probably weren’t as great as you remember.
I was just old enough to watch Alice, but not old enough to have been allowed to watch the movie. So I was today years old when I realized the TV series was a spinoff of the movie! 😲
She probably saw Flo as someone too sassy and amoral. And her issues of dealing with an annoying son, neglectful late husband, and a cruel and abusive man just days before didn’t help.

I watched Alice TV show back in the 70s and 80s ...i had no idea it was a movie before the show. I accidentally stumbled upon it flipping through the channels.
It was tragic the way she abruptly left the show - she was credited in her final show but only appeared in a phone call with a storyline about Jolene's arrival - with five episodes left in the season, too! Belle was popular enough to win an Emmy in the 22 episodes she appeared in.
@@ochsj1971 The Flo character was done like JJ on Good Times. No wonder Polly didn't ever want to do it again. Belle was like the original Flo. I would bet that there was a reason nobody saw Linda on TV for years. ****Anyway, interesting story from September 2018.....In North Carolina, a man who owned a restaurant refused to evacuate for the hurricane. He was standing next to his sign and it said "FLORENCE. KISS MY GRITS!". Now that's nostalgia! The name Florence will likely be retired like Sandy and Katrina, but it was neat to see.
I saw an interview with Polly Holliday. She got sick of saying "Kiss My Grits." And if there was an episode where she didn't say it, the audience wouldn't leave until she came out and said it.
I definitely don't know my entertainment history like I should, and I'm almost 60! That means I was 10 when this movie came out. I should have known that the sitcom Alice was developed from this drama. I missed it!
interesting how 3 cast members made the transition from movie to the tv show. though this tommy lasted only the pilot episode before being replaced and flo became belle who didn't stay that much longer.
Diane Ladd [as Flo the waitress] stole the show in this film. A real breath of fresh air. Ellen Burstyn and her son are supposed to be the protagonists and they even have a few cute scenes together but I ultimately found them to be unlikable. The kid was bad enough but Burstyn was even worse than him at times.
The boy played by Alfred Lutter was also in the series’ pilot episode before he got quickly replaced by Phillip McKeon for the remainder of the series.
Ken M And to settle the matter, they brought in Celia Weston as Jolene to deliver weak punchlines. Instead of punching up the comedy lines, they purposely punched it down, so there’d be no competition on the set. Celia ended up developing a loving character on “Alice” plus having a wonderful career to boot.
I love the movie and the show ..I thought Lavin did a great job as a character who was a single mother and not "man crazy" ..she was rational and level headed .. I've never heard any "behind the scenes" stories.. now I'm curious
LL is lucky to have such a great supporting cast and extras, as well. She isn't funny and not that great of an actress... or singer. But the ensemble was magnificent. Rather than being a b, she should have been grateful. Without them, the show would not have lasted as long as it did.
So many people saying Linda Lavin was a b****. Hard to believe. Her Alice character seemed tough but nice. And I thought she was good at acting and singing.
Yeah looks like the kid from the tv pilot I would say that the movie got the casting wrong but the tv show did well they just needed better writing if they redo it today they could at hotter people and more cat fights
I'm a Scorsese fan but watching this film felt like homework. It's one of the crop of films from the late 60s to early 70s considered groundbreaking for depicting life in a non idealized way-- it features a single mother struggling to make ends meet with a kid who curses a lot-- however it's not very impactful to contemporary eyes. There wasn't much of a plot to sink your teeth into and the back and forth screaming between the various characters became irritating after a while.
Why is everything in the 70's so dark and depressing? It is no wonder we needed a Reagan to come through in the 80's and make life a bit more colorful and lighter and optimistic.

I loved the whole vibe of this movie, it gave me such good time while I've watched.
The performances made it work so much.
One of Martin Scorsese’s most underrated films. Jodie Foster was great in it, and Ellen Burstyn deserved her Oscar.

It's the fact that Alice is imperfect, that makes her a character with depth and that's why she won her Oscar.
