My First Time With An Electro Capacitive Keyboard!

  • Hi!
Disclaimer: MMStudio sent out the Class80 for me to take a look at and is letting me keep the proto and sponsored the stream. While this is very kind of them, it does not affect my review at all or my thoughts of the board. Due to the nature of live streams, they also had no say in what goes on during the process, nor did they influence my thoughts.
    MY THOUGHTS:
Round 2 of the class80 anyone? MM Studio is bring this gem of a board back for a round too, with a few changes. The internal weight has a fancy new finish and now the board has EC compatibility! The new weight looks so awesome and (as per the norm lately) it's hidden away in the internals and will never see the light of day unless you do a rebuild. It's a shame they couldn't use this really fun finish of the weight somewhere on the outside! Not the end of the world but Id love to see it more thoughtfully used.
Aside from that, the class80 is pretty much the same and I must admit, after building the Class60 I wanted all the "Class" series boards to have the same leaf spring mounting system. I thought maybe this new version of the 80 would have that same mounting system, but it doesnt. Fear not, it still works very well! Its comfy and offers both a gasket mount and top mount. I ended up building the EC version of the PCB and WOW I loved it. It was my first time using EC.
To note though, I do think this board is pricey. It starts at 350 and I'm not sure who this is for. For the vintage keyboard lover this may be the niche board you're looking for with tons of options, or maybe someone who likes that "retro" game logo on the back!

It would be nice if when they stop producing units, they release pcb files so if something goes wrong we can order another from pcbway or something like that. This is a hobby that's supposed to be "custom" yet if we want to add things that are not standard for no reason like led support or alps support, we have to reverse engineer the whole pcb because the designers refuse to help us because "it would be harder to do support if people were using custom pcb's" yet fully support and advertise for creators who do like mouser. Like damn, it's not your secret blend of 11 herbs and spices it's just a circuit board
also, you definitely 100% need to lube the pcb. That spring sticking sound shouldn't be there. I put gpl105 on my pcb and that did the trick

The solenoid is nice, but what would put it over the top is if, when you hit enter, it rings a little bell.

Sounds great. It would worth testing different materials with the solenoid IMO.

I really like how silent mode sounds because I didn't hear any occasional upstroke noise like my keeb does whenever I let the spring go back up with full force. I assume if I get any topre/topre clone with silencing rings and lube the sliders then it will pretty much sound like this?

Everything is sold out. I went to there website a week ago. You must have got in before I did. Do you know if all EC keyboards have the option for different obnoxious sounds? That's really enjoying to me.

Supposedly you lube PCB underneath the spring in case of EC switches.

Love the vids per usual, but the editing was weird in this one, the curse words were only half bleeped out? Sometimes we hear quack, other times it’s “f%*k” plain as day. Weird.

Looks cool. Seems fun. But those sounds are toxic af. If it could produce good mechanical keyboard sounds from various switch/plate configs, that would be awesome.
