i forgot to add that she resembles margaret hamilton in many ways, even physically. she was not afraid to play an essentially unlikable character, one with more than a touch of villainy. she could chew scenery with the best of them her male counterpart was perhaps alec guiness [especially as fagin in ''oliver''] it is unusual to see as middle aged female character who is as rascally, , raffish. devious, dangerous and cruel [,played with a wicked glint in the eye which is almost always the province of masculine performers] she is all of these things and more , and as much as any other rogue in british cinema. this includes robert newton as bill sykes in ''oliver'', and as long john silver in ''treasure island''. she is as versatile, truly unique, and as original a performer who ever appeared on the stage or in film. she is in many ways a fascinating abberation, an anomaly. she is of course, an aquired taste. but once seen, she is unforgettable.

ethel griffies was the superb character actress, and virtuoso who excelled in this kind of role. she was the champion in the role of female curmudgeon, and battle-axe. her only competition was margaret hamilton[ ''the wicked witch in ''the wizard of oz''] and perhaps [to a lesser extent] edna may oliver [ aunt betsy trotwood in ''great expectations''] bravo ethel and company!

Ethel G. played a somewhat sympathetic (likable) character in "Music for Millions" even though playing a "vinegary" role, similar to Agnes Moorehead

i also forgot to include dame judith anderson,[ the diabolical housekeeper, mrs danvers in ''rebecca''] and martita hunt [ miss havisham in ''great expectations''] who are also excellent examples of this superb type of character actress. there are others whom i have forgotten, but will probably remember later.. these are the ones who come to mind right away.
